Thanks folks. Tomorrow I'll take a file and shape the mag to my gun. Then it's going to get loaded with buckshot and slugs a few times. After reading mixed reviews on this site I'm going to test this mag hard tomorrow.

I picked up a 12 round Surefire mag at the gun show today. I went to put it in my Saiga 12 and it doesn't fit! My S12 is from the second batch that RAA imported, so it's possible that the specs have changed in the last few years. The problem is that the rear of the mag has square corners, but the rear of my magwell has rounded corners. Is my mag out of spec or is my gun out of spec? I don't really want to file on the magwell to square the corners because then I have to refinish that area, but I don't want to weaken the plastic mag either. I talked to RAA about this back when they were recalling S12's, they said then that they wouldn't be importing any until ammo was available. I haven't seen any ammo so I assume there are still no plans to bring these in.

There's none of that equal force crap in South Carolina (the state where this story happened). If someone is in your house uninvited you can assume they intend you great bodily harm, even if the intruders were unarmed the shooting would still have been ok. SC is one of the states that recently passed a Castle Doctrine law guaranteeing such protections.

I recently put a BT in my SAR-1. It significantly changed the profile of the recoil, instead of being a sharp slam it was more of a roll. Kind of like shooting a .40 pistol vs a .45. The new recoil is much more pleasant and controllable. Reliability has not be affected, it has several hundred rounds with the buffer with no issues. I've got to get one for my S-12, looks like I'll have to call blackjack this time. My 19" has 4 gas holes and kicks harder than my old 17" with 3 gas holes, I think a buffer will soak up a lot of this.

My 17" gun had 3 ports in a triangle, it functioned fine with all the loads I threw at it. I think the bolt on my 19" runs a bit fast, it seems to have more kick. It probably just needs a buffer.

I heard a rumor from a reliable source that the Vepr might come in as a LEO only gun.

The slot in the rear trunion seems pretty wide, it could certainly be narrower and still work but it doesn't look rough like someone messed it up. I'll put some calipers on it tonight and maybe someone can compare to thier trunion. I really like Ron's suggestion because it's simple and easy to do. I think I'm going to gently modify the back of the topcover with a body hammer or maybe some big pliers wrapped in duct tape. It wouldn't take much, even a 32nd would give sufficient engagement to the front trunion.

I was testing my new S12 when I noticed the topcover is too short. Anyone else experience this? I'm wondering if this is really a problem or if it's normal for an S12, on my other kalashnikov based guns the topcover fits flush to the trunion. The topcover is about a 16th too short, this results in a gap between the topcover and the trunion. This also means there's only about a 32nd left in the trunion which is less than I'd like. The thread protector unscrews. The threaded barrel is the whole reason I traded my 17" gun, I'm planning to make tank trap style brake and I'd like to be able to put a mod choke on it for an occasional clay plinking session.

Call them and ask. My experience is that they'll tell you what's up. I asked about the 9x53 and they told me that they weren't going to import any until ammo was widely available, and they were working on ammo availability. Obviously that's not why you can't find a 30-06, but I'm sure they'll give you a reason.

The rear site is in a dovetail so it can probably be adjusted for windage with a hammer or similar device. The front post is fixed. Tromix has an option to put some better sites on the gun. There's also some folks selling an AK style front site that would be adjustable for windage and elevation like any other AK site. You'll have to ask around or search for details. I like the existing sites, but I'm not a competition shooter. Call RAA and ask if they've got any vent-rib guns or when they're coming in. They're good people and will give you an honest answer.

Those are the same sites that came on the 17" guns. I don't know if any guns with vent rib adjustable site rails have been imported by RAA. I know that all the IZ-109's have this style site, I checked with RAA before I ordered my new gun. The IZ-108 doesn't have the bolt stop (note that none of the 17" guns have a bolt stop) so I wasn't interested in it regardless of it's site configuration.

I got one of the new RAA 19" guns, an IZ-109. I traded my 17" gun for this one, I really wanted the threaded barrel. Major differences first for those who don't want to read my novel below: Better paint job. BHO included. Includes a muzzle nut instead of a choke. Initial impression is that there's a better paint job than my 17" but the metal finish isn't as good. The paint job feels thicker, and it's a flat black where my other gun was more of a satin. I've got one of the new 19" RAA guns. I'll post some pics and a review tonight. Mine doesn't have a site rail. I'll get a close up of the muzzle. It's threaded just like all the others but it has a thread protector/muzzle nut instead of a choke.

I'm no expert but I think you'd need a new receiver. Once the receiver is made into a rifle it's always a rifle. If you buy a 100% receiver you need to have it registered as a pistol when your dealer does the paperwork. I wouldn't cut up a saiga for a pistol when good AK parts kits are still available for just over $100.

The new guns don't come with chokes, just a muzzle nut to protect the threads. The good news is they do come with BHO's. Mine should be here soon and I'll post pics and details.

I haven't been around in a while and I totally missed the S-12 recall thing until RAA called and sent a letter asking for my gun back. I've got my shipping label from RAA and I'm about to ship my gun back, I'm wondering if I should just put it back in the original box or find some way to ship it that isn't so obvious there's a gun in the box. RAA made it clear that if they don't get my gun the ATF is going to stop by to get it (they were being informative, not threatening). While I don't have anything to hide from the ATF I'd prefer not to deal with them so I'd like to make sure this

My 17.5" S-12 will short cycle when shooting from the hip. It cycles fine on all loads from the shoulder. I haven't tried Winchester AA specifically, but I've run a few hundred rounds of cheap wally world birdshot.

Yup, that's the barrel and it's almost the entire exposed length of the barrel. It screwed up the finish too, the paint has flaked off pretty bad around the name after 1 cleaning and 100 rounds. The finish on this gun is really bad, in some areas it's some sort of thin paint that's coming off (barrel and fcg pins). It looks like after they machined off the EAA marks they painted the gun, with the safety in the fire position. Some parts of the gun are blue, like inside the receiver. This blue stuff is coming off with Hoppes No. 9 so that's not well done either. I haven't decided yet

Thanks Cobra. It's a 19" threaded barrel with no obvious taper. According to the manual all threaded barrels are cylinder bore. Some other things to note: This gun is boxed as an IZ-109 but has fixed sites. Buyers who really want adjustable sites may want to have their guns checked before they ship. It seems that not all the guns have the ugly marks covering the old import marks, again if you have a preference you may want to ask your distributor to handpick one without.

Interesting marks on my new S12. If I look in the right light I can see that underneath the big mark it used to say EAA Corp. Anyone want to let me in on what used to be under the little mark? This receiver is marked 2001 like Tony's but his import mark is in the right spot. Another interesting point, the slug that goes between the gas port and the piston is dirty on both sides but clean on the edges. If it was dirty on one side I'd just figure it was test fired at the factory, but both sides is a bit odd. I wonder if this was a return that EAA sent back. We'll find out tomorrow if i

"gaping hole"? Care to elaborate on that? I know the ejection hole needs to be bigger to fit a 12ga shell through it, but I thought that hole got covered with a piece of sheetmetal that moves with the bolt. I won't be able to get my S12 until the weekend so I need to live vicariously through everyones posts and pics I'm guessing the 2001 vintage are the non-BHO guns that EAA didn't want so they're getting unloaded first, much like PvtPile has suggested.
