  1. the thread I found it in, the guy who knows the owner said it's 100% reliable, and yes it has no safety. lol
  2. I would bet he used aluminum pop rivets, as it's almost like nobody knows that steel ones exist. Who knows though.
  3. I've always wondered if anybody back in the days of those complete kits tried hardened steel pop rivets. They can fill in a shitload of material. I suspect they would've worked better than even loctited screws. any way, at least it's not this
  4. screws were popular when complete barreled kits were coming in. you didn't have to pull the barrel, you'd just drill out the rivets, remove any old receiver scraps, and insert the whole barreled trunnion assembly into a new receiver since barreled kits are all but gone thanks to the MG barrel ban, there's no reason not to completely rebuild using proper rivets. once you have the holes clear and have a bolt cutter tool or press, it should take a few minutes per rivet
  5. this is a 5.56 build so it will probably only ever see Polish or Bulgarian 5.56 mags.. though I understand that the low cap Tapco 5.45 mags work flawlessly. I'm already thinking of doing another as I have another barrel and partial kit, just no FSB/GB. Might have the barrel shortened and do Ak-102 build with combo block.
  6. Your little bolt head that you sent me didn't correctly buck the rivet heads, it was allowing some contact of the bit to the receiver even with aluminum foil "shims" - I guess rivets were slightly different dimensions than yours. So I had two basically do it twice. The inside of the rivets was formed properly on the first go, but there was a gap at the outside head, so I had to punch the heads in further to the receiver and crush them some more. I probably could've filed some material from the face of the bolt head tool, but I ended up using the trigger guard bit to set the heads instead, as t
  7. I tried a couple bar clamps, none as heavy duty as that. Each one I had just wanted to bend/deflect.
  8. I have done the Europe trip a few times, jet lag not an issue. I stay awake or sleep as long as needed and then start a new schedule.
  9. Thanks for the tips. Leaving for SF tomorrow so that I can go to the PRC consulate first thing Tues morning and submit the visa app in person. Fortunately I found out that an agent will be picking me up in Shanghai and taking me the rest of the way there, so shouldn't be too much of a hassle. Flight to China is supposed to be first class. The engineer I'll be working with is around my age and is also a gun guy. I probably won't have any time to do much sight seeing, 14+ hour days are common in a drydocking op, and all sorts of surprised may await me.. But we'll see.
  10. I basically do what used to be the job of a marine radio/electronics officer, before a lot of that work was (unsuccessfully) automated. Most of the time I just go out the ships as needed, or on a maintenance basis, and maintain ship computers, servers, satellite/radio communications equipment, GPS, radar and electronic charts (most large ships run on autopilot via "ECDIS" electronic chart/route plotting systems) and some of the interface electronics between navigation equipment, engineering automation systems, misc sensors and other custom electronics systems (e.g. refrigerated container monit
  11. First of all you'd better have the right carrier. The Saiga needs an AK-74 type carrier. Contrary to some of the old information in the links above, an AK-74 bolt WILL work in the Saiga .223, as long as it headspaces OK. You'll need to find a gunsmith that knows what they're doing with an AK. Russian, Bulgarian, or E.German 5.45x39 AK-74 bolt will work. I believe a Tantal bolt would also work but not 100% sure. The bolt may need to have the extractor claw tuned to properly grip the .223 rim, but plenty of people have built AK-74 kits with .223 barrels and have had zero issues with
  12. Just installed and headspaced a barrel with this little setup. I figured it might be useful to some doing home builds without a press. This is a good alternative to a press, it will not damage the receiver, trunnion, barrel, or bolt carrier, and you can use parts of the same tool set to install barrel components once you have the barrel headspaced and pinned. First off you will want to check interference fit of the chamber to the trunnion, and relieve some material as necessary. This is an Arms of America 5.56 barrel (same as AK Builder I believe) and it checked out spot on to go into the
  13. war on women sexist probably a future rapist too
  14. I take it back, the commercial Polish 5.45 V-project mags do appear to be the same greenish material as the newer Beryl mil mags. They're probably tough enough for rough use, still not as good as steel reinforce. A couple posts on AKfiles show them surviving pushup and drop tests.
  15. Bulgarian, Russian, or Polish surplus are probably the best you can find. The Bulgarian and Polish commercial mags don't look too bad, but most lack any metal reinforcements. The Polish mags are really cheap - around $15 - and every review I've read said they function 100%. Just no reinforcements. Apparently the Polish army thinks that's OK, since Polish military currently uses non-reinforced mags in the Beryl series, but I don't know that the commercial mags are made of the same material - the current issue Beryl mags are green translucent, these are not. Tapco magazines are stupid lo
  16. office has sucked ass since 2007 when everything was changed to the ribbon format. it's just gone downhill ever since. I personally know a couple MS employees who tend to point their fingers at MS' imported Indian developers and designers for most of the stupid decisions made by the company in the past 10 years, including one (a Filipino guy BTW) who blames Vista entirely on the Indians.
  17. I'm married and not a huge fan of asian women so I guess I can skip out on the AIDS the trip has quickly become fucked up though, as I learned that it can take up to 14 days to get a Chinese VISA through normal channels.. So now they want to fly me to San Francisco so I can go into the PRC consulate and do it in person, then fly from SFO to China. never wanted to go on this trip, and NOT happy with the circumstances. I loved to travel until I had to worry about leaving a 1 1/2 year old son at home.
  18. fortunately I have close to zero interest in the drinking games.. could be a problem as I'll be working with a bunch of engineers who I know tend to get into that sort of thing while there.
  19. Got a short notice work trip to near Ningbo, China next week. I'll probably be there 7-10 days. I don't know jack shit about the area so I'm going to read up a little bit on it. Anybody here spent any time in China - specifically if around Ningbo and that area, and have any recommendations? Any great bootlegged shit to look out for in the markets? I generally don't enjoy working with the people of the Chinese marine industry so this should be exciting.
  20. As I mentioned earlier, there are some internal differences between AK-47/AKM rifles and AK-74 type rifles - Saiga rifles are based on AK-74/100 internals. A lot of US manufacturers only develop and test for the AK-47/AKM.
  21. euro football or hockey isn't involved yet she doesn't talk jive so her opinion is immediately dismissed
  22. I own a Mosquito and would not buy one again. Requires too much tweaking and is still picky about ammo in ways that make no sense - e.g. it will choke on Federal bulk but will run all day long on Rem Golden Bullet. Shame because it has great weight and ergos. Wife loves to shoot it so there's that. I would rather buy a Ruger 22/45 after carrying and shooting one that a friend bought. Huge aftermarket, nicer ergos than the standard Mk series, and dead reliable.
  23. Can't just press the hammer down to start the carrier insertion? It should never travel that far back with recoil spring installed, but who knows. I don't know what you're looking at.
