  1. I'm with you in the camp about "It's my rifle, I'll do what I want." At the same time, I do actually prefer the rifles to retain the traditional milsurp lines. But that is an aesthetic thing for me. I've got something that makes them cring-- and yet, I am blameless. I bought a rare Finnish Mosin Nagant M28/30 "D" Bore, 1941 manufactured, made by Sako. The rifle had been drilled and tapped for a scope, and had both the front and rear sights removed. The rear sight leaves had been shaved to accomodate the scope. And the Bolt-handle was turned down. Since I actually wanted a good mo
  2. I'm glad you brought that up. Actually, Katrina is what taught me MOST of the lessons of how "comfortable" I was. Since that time, I've changed quite a bit in my life and perspectives. When Katrina hit, I was woefully unprepared in terms of firearms and ammunition. While I had some hunting rifles, my only Self-Defense firearms was a Century SAR-1 and a Glock 19. I had approximately 160 rounds of 7.62x39 and a 50 round box of 9mm. AS SOON as able, the first thing I did was go to get more ammuntion. No Luck. It seems that the authorities BANNED the sale of guns or ammunition in a

All I really know is that I'm gonna have to be in REALLY bad shape for the idea of drinking my urine to seem an attractive option for me. -- John

On its own merit, gold is an excellent hedge on inflation. But then again, so is Real Estate. For the purposes of building a diversified portfolio, there is a place for gold. For the adventurous speculator, any commodity, futures contract, or options contract represents opportunities. But for planning for TEOTWAWKI, I don't get it. You can't eat gold. You can't do much of anything with gold. If we all became Mad Max, we'll be bartering. Gold won't be high on the list of things people NEED. You'd be better off using the money you would invest in gold for buying equipment to m

Wow Bob.... harsh crew over on ARF. Frankly, I think this was a healthy discussion. If we all shared the same experiences and perspectives, life would be sadly boring. Only through having ideas challenged and debated can they be measured for merit. I enjoyed this discussion. -- John

Wow... The Return of the Living Thread... Like Bob, my opinions haven't changed and, in reality, we are not diametrically opposed in perspective. Preparation means BOTH preparing for emergencies and PLANNING for a life without them (i.e. investing) I appologize for not being around much lately. In March, my wife and I undertook the massive project of restoring a home built by my Great-Grandfather. It's turned into a dream home and we are living there now. It's taken most of my free time. It's slowing down now, so I should be around more. -- John
  7. From my THR post: Something has occured to me. We complain and criticize the choices of Presidential candidates and talk about how we don't have a viable pro-2nd Amendment candidate. That's fine. I do it too. However, Zumbogate made me realize something. We HAVE power, and we HAVE a voice. All of us (I hope) have been active in defending our 2nd Amendment Rights in the form of writing sponsors (Zumbogate) and writing Congress men and women (HR 1022). That is a great start to our building a strong voice in the coming 2008 elections. We MUST continue this momentium. It's o
  8. Ok.... looks like problem solved. For reference a Saiga 308 converstion with: 16 inch barrel 3 inch muzzle brake 9.5 inch stock PSOP scope 20 round magazine Will *roughly* have the following dimensions to work with: 40 inches long 12 inches tall 3 inches wide I found these that will work and has a wide range of quality to cost: http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/template...&hasJS=true http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/template...ndexId=cat20772 http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/template...ndexId=cat20772
  9. hehe...yep... I think I've seen a few in local pawn shops. I think I'll swing by one on the way home tomorrow. This site is giving me all sort of ideas: http://www.rockhardcases.com/guitarandbass.htm John
  10. The keyboard case option looks very doable... but OMFG some of them cost a lot! http://www.skbcases.com/music/products/pro...p;c=76&s=76 http://www.skbcases.com/music/products/pro...p;c=76&s=76 I'm seeing some of these cases going for the mid-350's in cost. I think that makes them a bit cost-prohibitive since we haven't even talked about foam inserts on these.... John
  11. shane.... no worries my friend I may take another look at the Walmart cases now that I have the measurements of my rifle written down. Regarding music cases, I still think a keyboard case may be a good start, but not sure about a guitar one. I have a Hard Case for my Martin Acoustic guitar and I don't think It would fit in that one. Dad has a number of Fender Stratocasters and there is one that it MAY be able to fit in, but most seem to be far to thin to close on the rifle. All I know about keyboards is that my best friend has a number of them. I haven't seen the cases, but
  12. Cool guys... Tritium, How tall is the AR-10? I think the Saiga 308 with an FBMG is right at 12 inches tall. John
  13. These days, 308 will eat you out of house and home. For general plinking, 223 may be better. I stick with 308 because I am just that kinda guy-- and the fact that I can't really do much with a varmit caliber around here legally. John
