  1. I'm with you in the camp about "It's my rifle, I'll do what I want." At the same time, I do actually prefer the rifles to retain the traditional milsurp lines. But that is an aesthetic thing for me. I've got something that makes them cring-- and yet, I am blameless. I bought a rare Finnish Mosin Nagant M28/30 "D" Bore, 1941 manufactured, made by Sako. The rifle had been drilled and tapped for a scope, and had both the front and rear sights removed. The rear sight leaves had been shaved to accomodate the scope. And the Bolt-handle was turned down. Since I actually wanted a good mo
  2. I'm glad you brought that up. Actually, Katrina is what taught me MOST of the lessons of how "comfortable" I was. Since that time, I've changed quite a bit in my life and perspectives. When Katrina hit, I was woefully unprepared in terms of firearms and ammunition. While I had some hunting rifles, my only Self-Defense firearms was a Century SAR-1 and a Glock 19. I had approximately 160 rounds of 7.62x39 and a 50 round box of 9mm. AS SOON as able, the first thing I did was go to get more ammuntion. No Luck. It seems that the authorities BANNED the sale of guns or ammunition in a

    "SHTF" = WTF

All I really know is that I'm gonna have to be in REALLY bad shape for the idea of drinking my urine to seem an attractive option for me. -- John

On its own merit, gold is an excellent hedge on inflation. But then again, so is Real Estate. For the purposes of building a diversified portfolio, there is a place for gold. For the adventurous speculator, any commodity, futures contract, or options contract represents opportunities. But for planning for TEOTWAWKI, I don't get it. You can't eat gold. You can't do much of anything with gold. If we all became Mad Max, we'll be bartering. Gold won't be high on the list of things people NEED. You'd be better off using the money you would invest in gold for buying equipment to m

Wow Bob.... harsh crew over on ARF. Frankly, I think this was a healthy discussion. If we all shared the same experiences and perspectives, life would be sadly boring. Only through having ideas challenged and debated can they be measured for merit. I enjoyed this discussion. -- John

Wow... The Return of the Living Thread... Like Bob, my opinions haven't changed and, in reality, we are not diametrically opposed in perspective. Preparation means BOTH preparing for emergencies and PLANNING for a life without them (i.e. investing) I appologize for not being around much lately. In March, my wife and I undertook the massive project of restoring a home built by my Great-Grandfather. It's turned into a dream home and we are living there now. It's taken most of my free time. It's slowing down now, so I should be around more. -- John
  7. From my THR post: Something has occured to me. We complain and criticize the choices of Presidential candidates and talk about how we don't have a viable pro-2nd Amendment candidate. That's fine. I do it too. However, Zumbogate made me realize something. We HAVE power, and we HAVE a voice. All of us (I hope) have been active in defending our 2nd Amendment Rights in the form of writing sponsors (Zumbogate) and writing Congress men and women (HR 1022). That is a great start to our building a strong voice in the coming 2008 elections. We MUST continue this momentium. It's o
  8. Ok.... looks like problem solved. For reference a Saiga 308 converstion with: 16 inch barrel 3 inch muzzle brake 9.5 inch stock PSOP scope 20 round magazine Will *roughly* have the following dimensions to work with: 40 inches long 12 inches tall 3 inches wide I found these that will work and has a wide range of quality to cost: http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/template...&hasJS=true http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/template...ndexId=cat20772 http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/template...ndexId=cat20772
  9. hehe...yep... I think I've seen a few in local pawn shops. I think I'll swing by one on the way home tomorrow. This site is giving me all sort of ideas: http://www.rockhardcases.com/guitarandbass.htm John
  10. The keyboard case option looks very doable... but OMFG some of them cost a lot! http://www.skbcases.com/music/products/pro...p;c=76&s=76 http://www.skbcases.com/music/products/pro...p;c=76&s=76 I'm seeing some of these cases going for the mid-350's in cost. I think that makes them a bit cost-prohibitive since we haven't even talked about foam inserts on these.... John
  11. shane.... no worries my friend I may take another look at the Walmart cases now that I have the measurements of my rifle written down. Regarding music cases, I still think a keyboard case may be a good start, but not sure about a guitar one. I have a Hard Case for my Martin Acoustic guitar and I don't think It would fit in that one. Dad has a number of Fender Stratocasters and there is one that it MAY be able to fit in, but most seem to be far to thin to close on the rifle. All I know about keyboards is that my best friend has a number of them. I haven't seen the cases, but
  12. Cool guys... Tritium, How tall is the AR-10? I think the Saiga 308 with an FBMG is right at 12 inches tall. John
  13. These days, 308 will eat you out of house and home. For general plinking, 223 may be better. I stick with 308 because I am just that kinda guy-- and the fact that I can't really do much with a varmit caliber around here legally. John
  14. Adam, I swear you are reading my mind! I was talking to my wife last night about the possibility of using a Keyboard case, stripping it out, and filling it with "pluck" filler. That would be inconspicious, as well as be lockable. The foam won't be hard to get at all. I've found a lot of places that sell the fill foam for Pelican cases, as well as some that sell fill for various shipping needs. Looks like I'll have to think outside the box if I am gonna put my rifle IN a box John
  15. I hear ya... I am only talking about capibility, not how I intend to transport it. However, I very well may. A lot of my transporting is strapped to a 4 wheeler and getting from my house to my deer stand. Here, the police are very RKBA friendly, and expect you to have a firearm.... but they'd freak out as much seeing an unloaded one as they would a loaded one, I expect. For the purpose of this, I could as easily say that it has to clear my pistol grip and scope mounted. The grip has about the same length as a 20 round magazine on mine. (It is an adjustable palmrest "PSG1-ish
  16. Hi guys, I've been playing with the idea of getting a nice fitted hard case for my 308. Here's the problem: In order to have clearance for how I'd possibly like to transport the rifle, I'd need a large case. Ideally, I'd like to transport it withe the PSOP scope attached and *possibly* with a 20 round magazine in the rifle. This is making the rifle rather tall. With a 20 round magazine in the rifle and an 8X PSOP, I'm looking at a roughly 12" tall rifle. The largest cases I've seen have either 13.5" or 14" internal dimension clearance for the height of the rifle which leaves
  17. I'm sure you could find something that works, but If it were me, I'd just order a screw. John
  18. I home-duracoat my rifles with good success. I've learned that its a better route to bake the gun in your oven for 1 hour at 110 degrees rather than just air drying. It seems the finish is a lot harder that way, but that is only my observation. I do it on the cheap: Cheap Airbrush using canned propellent and Duracoat mix. I think the beginner package was 39.95. I did clog up my airbrush and had to buy another one recently. I think I may be redoing my Saiga 308 in UZI green with Black Oxide bolt and furniture soon, though... it gets addictive with all the color options. John

    .308 v x39

I'm a deer hunter and I use my EBRs hunting. I'm in a situation where I CAN have shots up to 400 yards on some of the food plots that my family plants. However, I also spend a LOT of my hunting time on trail stands where I may have a maximum shot of 30 yards. Let's face it: 308 is gonna hit a LOT harder than x39 at any range. 308 is also going to be a lot better round if you have to shoot at a distance. This is not saying, however, that x39 doesn't have capabilities for hunting as well. After going through this thought process myself, I've gone the following route: On my longe
  20. I was originally concerned that my FBMG mags had wobble when I inserted them. Load them and you'll be glad for that wobble. Mine with 20 rounds in them fit VERY snug. That wobble isn't a problem-- its a feature. John
  21. Grandfather clauses are irrelevent. We, as America Citizens need to make it abuntantly clear that the line must be drawn. The 2nd Amendment was to address the potential for tyrantical rule, not deer hunting (although I hunt). Is it ANY wonder that those in the position to BE a tyranical oligarchy wish to REMOVE portions of the BILL OF RIGHTS that does not sit easy with them? In my opinion, the ONLY way a law should be able to superceded the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America is if there is a Congressional Amendment REMOVING the 2nd Amendment altogether.
  22. Thanks vjor It's been a labor of love. Oh... I gotta brag on this: The machinist that did my muzzle threading and I were walking out the door and he said... hey, you don't want some 308 surplus do you? He explained that he sold his M1A and the only 308 he has is a Remington 40x that he won't shoot milsurp in. I asked how much? I'm proud to say that I got an additional 200 rounds of SA Milsurp for 30.00 from him. :) I only wish he had more... John
