  1. Yup! I'm heading over to the in-law's shop today to use the mill again. Aggravating. If you look closely at the top photo, you can actually see the scribed line I put on the side of the trunnion to mark the difference between the factory trunnion and the unmodified folding trunnion. I initially thought I'd give it a go to see if there was any interference because I felt like that was an aweful lot of material to remove so close to the rear latch hole. Lesson learned. Ray, any chance you could post a photo of the firing pin recess on the rear trunnion?
  2. I dove into my rear trunnion and removed the side mount scope rail today. From the photos I've found, it looks like the scope mount holes are present on other S12K's, but the unused holes have domed rivets covering them. So, I riveted them closed as opposed to welding them shut. For the trunnion, I used the blueprints Pookie was gracious enough to host on his site. I placed the trunnion on the left side of the receiver and took a look at how well it lined up with my scribed lines. Sanity check! Drilled the holes for the bottom rivet: Cut the hinge relief: Pus
  3. I have nothing to add to this conversation other than to say TxZen is DEAD to me as he beat me out of a 500M AK-105 leaf sight on the AK Forum. I'm giving him the silent treatment.
  4. Would these be available for other people? I would love to go for this but I would need a template or jig for my comfort level to attempt. Send me or Ram a PM. Did you perm attach or SBS I had it permenantly attached (double blind pinned top and bottom).
  5. I test fired the 12K this morning and had the exact same results that Ray had. With the shorter barrel, it would not cycle the Federal value packs but chewed through 2 3/4" high brass like nothing. I swapped out the stock spring for a 1911 spring I use in my other S-12 and it cycled the Federal value pack ammo just fine. It will need some break in and some massaging to get it to cycle the cheap stuff, but the initial signs are very promising.
  6. I'm about 80% done with mine. I got the basic conversion done today but am waiting on a set of templates from RamLake to help cut the rear of the receiver for the side folding trunnion. So, I put a fixed stock on there temporarily. I'm still debating whether or not to cut the side rail off. But, I went a head and reassembled it just so I can test fire it to make sure everything works before I refinish it. Getting there! Once everything's done, it off to the sand blaster then a nice matte black finish in Duracoat.
  7. Well, I already have the AK-Builder trigger guard which I thought was the correct style prior to finding those photos. I pulled the screenshots of the strange TG from the Izhmash promotional video on the exp. ver. 030. I don't know if the confusion stems from my inadvertent mixing up of different models or if, as redcedar suggests, they are the result of prototyping and/or production changes. Either way, I'm not sure if it's fair to characterize my conclusions as outright false, but I'm happy to see my AK-Builder TG is correct as far as some photos show. ...I wish I spoke Russian.
  8. Ray, I'd like to get your thoughts on this issue too... I've been doing a bit of research on authentic S-12K's and found a couple interesting differences. First, the trigger guard is very uniusual and not at all like any of the TG's I've seen on the market. Notice the unusual rivet plate and large forward radius. Not sure exactly how I'm going to replicate that, just yet. Also, you can see here, this S-12K does not have a side mount scope rail. I'm wondering if I should remove the scope mount and fill in the holes. Plus, the flash hider appears to be chrome lined:
  9. I got mine in today and it wasn't even in my hands for an hour before I tore it apart. I already replaced the gas block with one I picked up from KVAR too! . Whoo Hoo!
  10. Absolutely! Suum Cuique Thanks for the tip on grinding a butt pad. I'll just pick up a limb saver pad and grind it to fit. That should do the trick!
  11. +1,000,000 on going light. I recently ditched my tri-rail setup for a much more comfortable RPK style hand guard from KVAR. Huge improvement in terms of balance, slimness and aesthetics.
  12. Well, I try not to knock on people for their quad rails either as I was just as guilty. I've just outgrown the fad. I've also outgrown VFG's and matched pajamas, btw. The improvement made when I installed that KVAR hand guard was dramatic and immediate. I had that rail on there so long, I had forgotten how light and nimble the S-12 could be. I was never really satisfied with the market offerings when it came to hand guards. With the exception of Dinzags AK74 conversion, I was never really impressed with any of the options. Until KVAR came out with the RPK hand guard. LOVE IT!
  13. YUP! I'm just waiting for my Saiga to come in from Legion and then it's on like Donkey Kong.
  14. A better topic description may be "My Saiga 12 Odyssey". This is my first S-12 that I bought in 2007. It has been through several iterations and the following photos demonstrate both my changes in taste as well as market offerings. I thought it would be fun to post photos to show the evolution of my S12. Here is a shot from 2007: This stock stayed on the gun for about 20 minutes Here is one from 2008: Added the top rail and ACE stock Here is one from 2010 after I shortened the barrel and added a mag well (S12 on top): This photo was taken at the height of m
  15. I used one on a build and had the same issue. The TG was slightly askew and it snapped very easily when I tried to straighten it. I TIG'ed it back together but lesson learned. I stick to the AK-Builder TG from now on.
  16. The exchange rate is atrocious with NZ though. I checked the price of Russian 8's and they were like $200 each!
  17. That's really too bad. I hope everyone comes out of it to their satisfaction.
  18. Is the trunnion bore diameter on a 5.45 Saiga the same as all ComBloc 74's (22mm)? I'm interested in using a IZ-240 as a host for an AK-105 conversion.
  19. Damn, then I'm glad I just picked up these two Russian 8s! I I too had long been waiting for the prices to come down, but finally just bit the bullet and went OEM. I wonder if there will be more of a demand for domestically produced magwell magazines now that we're importing 030s? I thought you picked up factory 8 round rock and locks!? You got magwell 8's? Wait a minute.... what are we talking about here... magwell mags or rock and lock mags?
  20. Meh... not for me. I did get a chuckle from the rail on the flippin' gas block. Nice touch.
  21. I emailed Oleg and he said he doesn't expect to get any more Russian 8 rounders as they've gotten too expensive. Someone is going to have to start producing a US made replica of these mags. Pagine Mike D.!!!
  22. Yeah... can't wait for the Sons of Guns to do a special on the 030.
