  1. Actually, I'm not at all interested in the folding barrel, or the cut-out magazine. I just really wanted a set of interesting furniture to throw on for show (when the Saiga isn't pulling defensive duty. I AM a Firefly fan, so I thought it'd be a fun money-sink. And no, BattleRifleG3, I wouldn't dream of enlisting your services if I wasn't deadly serious with cash in hand. Once I figure out a few more particulars, maybe we'll talk. It seems at first like it would be prohibitively expensive to do all at once built on a gun. The project would be more like dimensioning and figuring o
  2. To dredge up an old thread, can anyone tell me where I might be able to have furniture like this made up? I know, you're gonna laugh and call me retarded, but really, I want it for sentimental reasons, not just because it looks <strike>f-ing retarded</strike> cool. I don't think there's any way in hell I could lay hands on the original prop, which is probably one of a kind, and if I'm not mistaken, Jim Boland died last year!! But would Gibbons be able to reproduce it for an exorbitant amount? -T
  3. What about using some kind of jig to bend up the mag bodies, kind of like how AK receivers are made? The other alternative is to cast the mags out of metal. Don't know if that would be much cheaper though.
  4. I agree with the "lock it back" philosophy. It's certainly possible to load both 5 and 8 rounders on a closed bolt with 2.75" shells. However, you have be careful to apply pressure and rotate properly, and this is VERY easy to fumble under combat stress (in my opinion...you may run into some Team Saiga 3-gunners who say its easy as pie). Locking the bolt back, while slower, is more reliable under stress. Even though I have a notched safety (and am looking to get a BHO catch), I still open my bolt by tucking the stock under my strong armpit, grasping the charging handle with my right fi
  5. Actually, the REAL problem with the S12 follower is that the "footprint" is completely covered by a 12 ga shell. There is no surface area on the follower that isn't also presented by the shell in normal firing. It's not like a tapered cartridge follower, or a handgun follower. That's the crucial design difficulty. The only thing I could think of would be a follower that actually had a spring loaded plunger INSIDE it....like a follower in a follower. When all the 12ga shells were out of the way, that spring would spring up and reach just a little higher to hit the BHO.
  6. There is a version of the TDI rail with only one rail on the bottom I believe. Look around. Also a Galil style handguard with one rail is out there. I would think an UltimAK would add a LOT of weight onto an already-front heavy Saiga 12. It'd start to handle like a battle rifle...
  7. I have nothing against homosexuals or their advice, but this thread is turning into Queer Eye for the Gun Guy. That said, I think there aren't many female members of the Saiga forum because at least the S12 is big, heavy, and sometimes punishing to the shoulder. Come to think of it, the Saigas seem to point slower and be more difficult to hold up than say, a Wingmaster 870 or a SxS.
  8. You mean a blackjack buffer? or a Stock pad?
  9. Couple more questions: 1) Can the bolt be retracted and locked back one-handed (if you brace the shotgun against the ground, or something)? 2) To release the bolt, all you have to do is yank the charging handle right?
  10. Anyone try Federal Estate, or Remington's reduced recoil tactical Buck in their Saigas? Does it function on setting 2 at least? I'm looking at it as an alternative because I want my wife (who isn't used to heavy shoulder arms) to be able to handle the S12 if it becomes a bedroom gun. I generally leave my S12 on setting 2 when not shooting recreationally, to keep the highest reliability. -FGJ
  11. I've gotten a G3 mag conversion to hand-feed properly, but not a chance to test it under live-fire conditions. If you're interested, we'll talk here or you can pm me. It took a LOT of work (in my opinion) to convert the G3 magazine, and it too, is limited to 2.75" shells because of the way the follower is retained.
  12. How secure is it? Is it better than the safety lever notch BHOs (which tend to release the bolt if the gun is given a good smack?) I'm thinking of getting one instead of a notched lever.
  13. WRONG. This new ATF shit is caused by ATF administion believing they need to stem the tide of imported and built AKs, because they belive such actions circumvent the intent of the 1989 import ban which is to prevent the flooding of our country with cheap arms. That said, "all this new ATF shit" is the fault of people who believe arms should be restricted based on cost, which is essentially a classist, unethical point of view designed to keep the rich powerful. It is NOT the fault of American entreprenuers trying to turn a buck within the law through innovation. Don't blame Batman for th
  14. I also have both types of mags. While there's no difference in feeding the gun, the full-length mag lips release the cartridge a little easier on mine.
  15. Keep the tool kit with your rifle. I can do anything to an AK with that tool kit! Well...except maybe press out the barrel. But it's only a matter of time until I find a way.
  16. Here's my thought for fabbing a sheet metal Saiga mag. Should required only metal cutouts, folding, and welding. I'd do it myself, but I don't have welding capability. Those of you with brakes and welders...think about it. The mag requires the following metal pieces: 2x mag outer sides. 1x mag frontstrap 1x mag backstrap 1x mag front lip 1x mag rear lip 2x mag inner sides 1x mag follower 1x mag inner baseplate 1x mag outer baseplate. Construction: After cutting out appropriate pieces, 1) Bend the tops of the mag outer sides to form the feed lips. flare the bottom to c
  17. I'd trust Tony on this one. He knows his wacky gun s***. Although I think making a new follower would be a better option than altering the mag body. If it were doable. A US follower certainly couldn't hurt, seeing as how its one step on the way to a US mag.
  18. $71 isn't bad. I got mine for about $65 each last year from Oleg. The price is steep, but not unreasonable, considering the 8 rounders really are a specialty item, sort of.
  19. Tony, how much extra capacity can you get if the follower just goes to the bottom of the mag, and the spring is entirely housed in the extension?
  20. 1) Someone on here HAS successfully done it. I forget his handle, but the gentleman is sure to post. 2) Valtro mags are still pretty pricey, but cheaper than 8-rounders. $85 I think, last time I talked to Valtro USA. Not really worth it, but then I already have 2 8 rounders.
  21. +1!!! You beat me to the punch. Here's the status on my conversion: You and I are both aligning the G3 mag's top edge with the saiga's, as opposed to aligning the feedlips (like I think zipgun was doing). This is better, methinks. Did you have to make a small circular cut to accomodate the rivets inside the Saiga? The factory mags have them, and I tried to mimic them as closely as possible. Also, I had to trim the maglips back in length a bit. Of course, I haven't reduced the maglip width to match the S12 yet. I haven't figured out how I'm going to do my locking tabs y
  22. Dude, just shell out the $1000 per year to become a ClassII SOT and import one for R&D purposes. Seriously. Getting them imported as sporters just isn't worht the trouble. Shell out the 1K a year, and have the real thing.
  23. Pathetic. Psst....btw, any of you guys out there who are sick of America's draconian gun laws and want to start your own country...now would be a good time to occupy Australia!
  24. BTW, I have a first-generation ACE which is actually a SAW stock mated to the ACE block. I'm planning on getting one of these because the stock ACE pad won't fit the SAW stock.
  25. It just so happens I have a Thai connection....are they any more common there than here? I think I might just kill for one. (Not your friend, of course!) -FGJ This is shot counter/timer a.k.a.
