Laminate Handquards

Recommended Posts

Okay gang, first off, Elite Firearms is sending my beloved Diana (that's my Saigas name) back to me. I sent her away to have a conversion done and she should be arriving late next week. I'll post a review then.

Well, now that she'll have a new Molly Coat finish, a Nato length black plastic stock and pistol grip plus the FCG, etc. I'm looking to dress her up nice with some furniture. I'm looking at this laminate hand guard and pistol grip set from Russian Military dot com. http://www.rusmilitary.com/images/akm_3pcs.jpg. They state on their web sight that it will fit AK-74 and Saiga M3 (7.62 or 5.56). What is Saiga M3? Anybody know of they are reputable or not?

I've also ordered dingzags retainer and a modded gas tube from him in anticipation of fitting this unique russian made hard ware to her body. Do you think that these parts will fit okay with just a little tinkering, or do I need something specific for the converted Saiga receiver? I've seen a lot of black plastic hand guards and pistol grips on converted Saigas, but I've been looking at pictures of other AK variants with this type of furniture, and I want my Diana to be as pretty as them. Cause now I'm addicted to gun porn. :smoke:

I don't think the wood would need any real tinkering, the handguards off my Romak 99.1 sliped on with no problems using dinzag's retainer.

I'm not familar with where that stock set is made, but i'm assuming since its Rusmil that is not "US parts" and therefore you should check 922r to see if your still in compliance. If you can't get there with that stock set and are set on wood look up "BattlerifleG3" he's making stocks and I'm sure would help ya out

If you want to use surplus military handguards you do have to stay in compliance in the US. It's not that damned hard though!

On mine I used a G-2 (that's 3) , a gas piston, a US brake, and all my mags are US wannabes. I hate to rely on a mag for compliance but I keep plenty of them around. I can make that sacrifice for real Russian wood.. :super:

Cobra, that's a nice lookin' gun porn babe. I like the way the Russian wood changes hue with the angle of light. Looks like you got the Russian Military dot com stock set on it. I think I can tell buy the little brass pin in the lower hand guard.

That's some good gun porn photography. I'll have to borrow a digital camera and see what I can do once I get Diana prepped and ready for show. She's not an exhibitionist, but I'm sure she'll want to have her picture taken with her new finish and furniture.

Yeah, the 922 thing is pain, but I'll just put a gas piston in her, some mojo sights, and probably go with US mags too. If worse come to worse, I can always get Wolf springs for the mags. I wonder if Wolf springs and Mojo sights count?

Gun porn, groan. Am I losin' it or what?

Floorplates, mag bodies and followers are the parts that count in mags

MacMan,

Matt at Ironwood Designs makes some killer compliance parts.

With a 4 piece set you get 3 parts, plus your fire control group (3) and you can slap in any AK mag or muzzle brake.

Probably cheaper than ordering from the U.K. as well.

As does BattleRifleG3, who has some really unique woods.

Yes I do love the way the Russian laminates change color with the light direction and brightness. It's irridescent. The HGs and PG I used on this one are factory Izhmash from the 1950's. I got them from a guy on gunsnet. They are the only ones I've seen with the serial number stamped in the side pf the lower HG. I believe you can get similar ones from rusmilitary. The cost is high and shipping a small hassle but I think it's worth it to have Russian wood on a Russian AK.

Here's another shot showing the colorful finish.

Nice Cobra. Sorry to hear about shipping being somewhat of a hassle at Russian Military, cause I ordered a set yesterday. Still waiting to hear about shipping confirmation so that I can know exactly how much shipping costs will be to balance my now almost depleted checkbook. :cryss:

Oh well. All I need now is dingzags muzzle brake, a tritainium front night sight, and the Russian red dot scope and mounts to round her out. The whole thing ended up costing me more than I anticipated, but at least I'll have the closest thing to the AK of my dreams I've wanted for years.

Just have to eat ramen noodles and beans for another month. :(
