WASR converted to hi cap

Recommended Posts

What do you think of the Century Arms conversions of the WASR 10s. I put a deposit on a new underfolder for $450 it was almost $200 cheaper than a YUGO underfolder but not as nice looking. The YUGO was out of my discressional money range and the WASR looks functional.

Am I wasting my money? I keep telling myself its an AK so it has to work... I want it for a "point that way and go bang stick" not a collector or a one hole punch.

What do you think???

Sorry if I wasnt clear, its been converted to use regular AK hi cap mags.

Go and read this site: http://www.gunsnet.net/Linx310/

It will tell you all the little problems that can exist (or have existed) in the WASR lineup, and how to fix them.

When you get it, if it's not straight out good-to-go, you can send it back to Century for fixin'

you'll like it I love my WASR when i bought mine i got to choose from 5 different WASR and chose the best 1. 1 of my buddies has one of the earlier versions and it had canted sights and trigger slap but was easily fixed. The only problem I had with my WASR was a really tight mag fit and i mean really tight, couple of Min's with a dremel tool solved that problem.

heres a pic of mine

I just got one, and I really like it. It isn't pretty, but it functions great. It may be that Century has changed things to address some of the problems that have been known to occur. For example, the disconnecter in mine does not have the "tab" on the back that may cause "trigger slap." Also, while the metal magazines that came with the gun wobble a little, Bulgarian "waffle" magazines fit just right. The gun required a thorough cleaning to remove the metal shavings left in the receiver after they milled out the mag opening, but other than that there have been no issues with it.

They have, indeed.

For almost 2 years now, Century has been using Tapco G2 FCGs in their WASRs and other builds.

I did notice the metal shavings still left inside the gun, and youre right its not pretty especially compared to the YUGO ...BUT... it was cheap enough to make it an impulse buy! I remember when all AKs were that cheap but those days are mostly gone.

I needed a weapon compact enough to deploy from a car when working high threat assignments. It has to be concealable enough to transport without attention, small enough to ride on the front seat next to me, and be usable in case I have to leave the vehicle in a hurry while "screaming like a girl" for back up which will likely be several minutes away.

Sadly it also had to be cheap enough to afford. I gave lots of thought into my options and a true underfolder (not an add on stock) seemed about the best option. A pistol grip shotgun is alkward to swing around in a vehicle and to my mind less user friendly when actually needed. Pistol caliber carbines are just as big and only fire pistol rounds. I carry a Glock already so theres little advantage to the carbines for this application. The various M4s (XM177E2s or CAR15s in my day) just arent compact enough to deploy while still in the car, (besides I already have one and this was an excuse to add an AK).

So when I went shopping I was faced with a nice looking YUGO underfolder for $680 and the WASR underfolder for $450. What suprised me was the dealer suggested the WASR. He pointed out the YUGO had a thicker reciever and was just nicer all around but he said he was comfortable suggesting the WASR. One of the salesman is a old (like me) Gunnery Sargent who (like me he remembers what AKs sound like coming and going) he reccomended the WASR over the YUGO as well.

My plan is to carry a 20 rounder in the the gun to make it even more compact. Ill carry a couple extra mags just out of habit but I cant see how they'd actually be needed. This is not a stand your ground situation, just a get me home safe sorta thing. Im hoping if things get that bad the sight of the AK will give me a few seconds to get out of harms way. The Ak should demand more respect when a Glock is a regular sight.

So now you know............ Do you still think the WASR was a good choice???

Im in law enforcement, I occasionally work some executive protection details. Its mostly boring with some occasional excitong moments. Some times I take part time extra duty where I dont have the use of my issued Special Response Team gear because of departmental policy. When Im working an off duty assignment it can be as simple as cruising an apartment complex to keep the kiddies from playing ball around the residents cars. Rarely theres a true BG assignment.

Even then the BG jobs are mostly from a client that just wants a armed escort around town. This is a case of what should be a piece of cake job. Is plain clothes with a lot of down time but some of the local youth groups have ID'd us a cops and weve recieved info that they dont like us hanging around. My real concern is from some young kid who wants to prove himself.

So Im back to the question of the WASR. Would you bet your life on it?

Going so far as to say one cannot 'bet their life' on any mechanical object, I'd trust the WASR ( in 7.62x39 or 5.45x39 ) as far as I'd trust anything.

I keep the .223 WASR out of the lineup due to the potential higher probability of malfunction which is a symptom of the 5.56x45 case design.

My WASRs in the commie calibers run like ugly swiss watches. . . .

After all the work I put into my GP WASR 10 to get it to run right.

(Replaced bolt, bolt carrier & gas piston entirely, dropped in g2 single hook trigger group, put in blonde wood, AK 74 style brake, ergo grip)

I'd bet my life on it easy.

Well, I picked it up yesterday because I had an assignment that was questionable (and well because I wanted an underfolder...). After I cleaned the metal shavings and the the storage grease, I gave it a closer look. Man its a rifle only an AK fan could love (and I do!).

So after a little sesion to beak it in I was off to work. Only this time my Glock had company. I purposely kept the passenger seat cluttered with a day pack and a couple of magazines ( the reading type). My Rommy was resting barrel down on the floor with the grip leaning against the passenger seat. It was comfortably within easy grasp. I had a loaded 20 rounder in place but none chambered. I decided to be cautious because the stock when folded made it difficult to move the safety.

As it turned out I had a citizen walk up to the passenger side of my vehicle to ask for directions and she never noticed my companion in the dark and seat clutter.

I going to look for a low profile single mag pouch for a spare 20 rounder like the type they make for M16 mags to go on duty belts.

So there you have it, my Rommy's first ride along was uneventful Thankfully....

Can you take closeup pictures of your safety lever? With the stock folded and extended, if you could. Thanks

You can add a Tapco folder but make sure it has the steel pin. Some of the early folders had plastic pins and they broke due to a built in stress concentration but Tapco replaced the pin in a few days with a steel one and now it works the way it was designed.

Sorry Im "computer challanged" and especially deficient with pictures. Many have tried to explain it to me but I cant seem to get it, perhaps its because the last computer class I took had punch cards....

The stock seems to fold fine. It locks open and closed and thers no bend to it. The issue is that when the stock is folded I can push the safety down but not far enough to make it click in the fire position. I suspect if it was FA it would move far enough to click in the FA position just not to the semi position.

Otherwise all is good. Im currently looking for a way to carry it discretely when I have to exit the car on routine matters. Its not like I can just leave it there behiund glass for a "potty break". So far Im using a sports bag. The kind that look tubular with a full length zipper and cloth wrap around handles. Im actually thinking the bags that carry the folding chairs might work without a mag in place. They have the added benifit of a shoulder strap.

Its alittle too big for a brief case. Its just a shame I couldnt use a Krinkov, what a surprise that would make coming out of a brief case. The normal gun cases look too much like a "GUN" case. I wish somebody would make one proportional to a breif case but still keep it flat on the outside. They could fit extra mags pouches inside and it might look like a big lagtop case. Also "happy colors" would blend in better than black. As an aside a similar case would work for a M4 if it the upper and lower were seperated. Broken down like that the M4 wouldnt be as fast into action BUT it sure could be carried without raising attention, unlike a long case.

1) Find yourself a 10 round doublestack magazine to keep in it while it's in the sports bag. I'm sure you keep loaded 30s close by if needed.

2) Have you considered carrying your AK with a loaded magazine, empty chamber and the safety off? Just racking the bolt handle'd put you in business ( I think that's easier to do than manipulating the safety [esp when folded]).
