S308 w/21" Barrel.. Optics..???

Recommended Posts

Okay.. Got a 21" S308 Saiga on the way and due in Friday... :killer:

I want a scope for it.. 100-700 yards.. Not Russian or POSP... Keeping it under $125..

First Choice... Bushnell Banner 71-3946 3-9x40 with BDC "cam" which figures the drop for 100-500 yards.:super:

Costs about $110.. (and I figure by using charts the drop to 600 and 700 yards and adjust ME accordingly...)

Second Choice.. BSA 4-16x40 with Illum Reticle.. $70 (had a 6-24x44 (for my AR) and was great)

Third Choice.... Pentax Gameseeker 4-12x40... has a mil-dot type reticle.. $99-120

Forth Choice... Tasco 6-24x42 Target/Varmit with Mil-Dot... $92.

BTW, I use a NCStar 6x32 on my 5.45x39 and works great for me out to 200 yards.. (getting 5-7" groups)

These (above) all have 3 1/2 - 4" eye relief...

Which one sounds good?? Any others I should be checking out??

Albert

Its a little more than your wanting to spend, but the Burris Fullfield II 3-9x40 Ballistic Plex is $200, and its excellent glass for the money, and it works great on a TWS Dogleg beryl.

+1 for Burris.

I was looking to put a scope on my Saiga from day 1. First I bought a Posp 8x42 WD, but even with a MOLT mount, the scope was sitting too high and looked terrible on the rifle.

About a month ago I decided to go with Bussis Timberline 2-7x26mm and low rings. I fn LOVE IT!!! It sits SUPER LOW and fits perfect on the rifle. The optics are top notch, very clear and bright. Holds the zero like a champ with over 300 rounds now and no problems!!! :-)

AK86.. Nice wood.. and scope. What scope side mount is that??

I was reading up and some say 9-12 x is the standard for 500-700 yards..

The other thing to keep in mind is the up/down range... Some scopes are 35 clicks up/down some are 66 clicks.. (need to keep in mind to more adjustment and drop at distances)

And then there is the mounting area length.

Anyone else bangin' gongs at 500+ yards with there S308's ??

I for 1 would definitely stay away from Pentax, I got one for my 308 and it shattered the lens, I have spoken to people that have the Platinum edition of the BSA and they love it, they told me that it holds zero and is very rugged......

NOT MINE

I am using a MOLOT sidemount from kalinkaoptics.com. yeah, it is a bit pricy, but it does EXACTLY what I need it to do...

Before you scope your saiga, we need to agree that these are by far NOT precison weapons. They have decent accuracy to engage a human-sized target (at that disance), but for target shooting, I really doubt that it's the rifle to get.

Keeping that in mind, you will not need anything more than 10x for your scope. Variable zoom makes a scope more fragile and is really not needed. Notice that most army issued sniper rifles have a fixed magnification of 10x. Scout snipers are expected to his a playing card at 300 yards under any conditions...

Any ideas...?

Thanks.

AK86.. I can do 1-2" groups at 100 yards with my converted 5.45x39 with the FIXED 6x32 scope with UTG side mount.

I'm not expecting to hit a CARD at 300 yards though a paper plate with the 308 would be great.

For 500 yards I demand :lolol: Zombie size target hits consistently. :killer:

I agree over 10x may be overkill.. but since (like the BSA 6-24x44) is within the price range I had set I was entertaining it..

I also added the illuminated option but think the battery's would die at some point.. :cryss:

BTW, the S308 will be converted also within 36 hours of getting it... gotta run at least a few boxes thru her first...

Anyone else got options for me???

I've a S.308-ver.21 that I'm planning to scope soon.

I've been asking questions and researching the subject and mounts/scopes, with a emphasis on inexpensive parts of good quality.

For a long range scope I'm probably going with this, http://swfa.com/Vort...ope-P43585.aspx

I'd rather have a scope in the magnification range of 3-20, and either 40-50 objective as long as the lens are high quality.

But SWFA's clearance sale price, Vortex's 'Unlimited & Fully Transferable Warranty' and my firsthand experience with their awesome customer service, has my full attention.

Vortex is under rated, and they stand 110% behind their products.

If I go with anything else, it'll be a Millet DMS 1-4x24, the DMS is a great all around scope.

From CQ red dot at 0-100yards, to it's 4x magnification, it allows me to easily ring steel at 455 yards with my friend's rifle, I think it do good out to 600 yards.

I plan to mount using a centered, low side mount such as the,

http://www.kalinkaop...ack-finish.html

And will probably use Burris Extreme tactical rings in either 1" or 30mm,

I have 3 BSA scopes and like then. They do a good job especially for the cost of them. I have the 4x16 illuminated, 6x24, and a older 8x32 that I really like. I haven't used any of these either of my two AK74's though. I do have a Mueller 4.5x14 on a UTG 978 low mount that I really like.

Check out what Mueller has to offer they are a terrific buy in scopes.

Its wierd Wally World had Center Point 6-24x50 illuminated today for $70.. (or something like that) and BSA and Tasco (all similar). The BSA was close in price for $59.. And the Tasco was $39 or 49..

I just think the ability with the Bushnell BDC model with the 'cams/turrets' make switching distance easier..

Going for AMMO this week and then a scope...

Heres Janis all converted up..

Anyone else have suggestions for under $125 ?? Also going with the GunTec Quick Detach mount from CSS I think on her.. don't need a side rail for a 'sniper' rifle..

Gun_Lover..

Had good luck with Bushnell thus far (with my Red Dot) and the 100-500 yard 'turret/cam' will make life easier to dial in IMHO.

Considering last week I had pushed 2 people on here to buy one with the BDC also, I decided to MAN-UP and buy one.. Theres were $110 from OpticsPlanet.. so for $78 shipped from B&H I couldn't go wrong really.

It came down to Bushnell and BSA for me.. And the 6-24x44 Illuminated Reticle and Mil-Spec style housing just wasn't for me..

The 4" eye relief and 13 oz seems good for me. Also ordered some ammo today for $0.47/rnd for 120 rounds from Grafs including shipping to me.. :killer: which is way better than the $0.96/rnd from Walmart last Saturday..

Going to do a review if I get everything in by the weekend.. :super:

The Bushnell Banner 3-9x40 with BDC 'turret/cam' should be fine for me.

I did some checking.. once zeroed at 100 yards and the BDC installed I simply crank to 500 yards on the 'turrent' and should be on the target.. It goes from 100-500 in 100 yard increments... I looked up a few different ballistics charts on different loads..

From 500 - 600 yards (w/500yd Zero) with STD FMJ loads there is a DROP of about 33" and at 700 yards ths drop will be 86".

With Federal Match 168gr loads the numbers drop to 27" at 600 and 62" at 700 yards.

I will keep this for 500-600 yards at the max and see what happens..

More pics to follow...

Got the scope in. Came with like 10 'turrents'. (does not have rings however)

The D turrent (most used for 150-168gr 308 ammo per the instruction booklet).

Has settings from 100-400 in 50 yard increments.. and then 400, 425, 450 yards.. there is a few more clicks.. thinking 475 max..

This is a nice decent scope for the money.. ($77 shipped)..

You sight it in at 100 yards and then just drop the cam on top of the 'top' screw and line up the 100 yard marks.

Just waiting on the mount due in later today via mail..

Post a few pics later..

Going to range Saturday or Sunday and will post review and targets for 100 and 200 yards..
