triharder72 1
How are most people adding the left hand bolt, welding or drill and tap? I understand that the bolt carrier steel is a tricky weld.
Cobra 76 two 2,677
It's been done all three ways with varying results. Having a hole drilled into the bolt carrier to insert the charging handle into is key. Some have experienced weakening problems with threading that led to shearing of the charging handle. The best, most sturdy attachment method is by drilling and then silver soldering, welding, or applying a suitable compound to keep the inserted handle from coming loose. I'm working on a couple of different ones now on my guns. Will post some pics when done.
triharder72 1
Thanks Cobra, I will mention this to my machinist.
Racer 27 37
I've got mine drilled and tapped. No problems yet with at least 500 rounds through it. It was a bitch to tap though.
Racer 27 37
I took a look at mine and it was a little loose. Put some more red lock tight on it and we'll see how long it goes this time.
Heath_h49008 442
I just TIG'd a shortened AK piston onto the raised flat and trimmed my dust cover. No drilling, no tapping, no problem. Have it done by someone who knows what they are doing with a TIG, and you'll be fine. I have a couple hundred rounds through mine and I don't even think about it. PYRO 44
I made a handle from a SS rod and TIG'ed it into the small corner so it is supported at the base and two sides of the handles stem, then blended the weld in with a dremel. Didn't drill, tap or recess the stem (but it is not a bad idea), and it shows no sign of fatigue after about 1500 rounds.
