L to R: .22 short, .25acp, .50AE, .500 mag w/700 grain bullet, 700 grain bullet by itself, .45acp, 9mm.

With max loads, velocities can exceed 1200 fps with the 700 grainer in an 8 3/8" barreled X-frame. John Ross has published loads with a 725 grain cast bullet that he's chrono'd at 1205 fps. That's a bullet weighing more than three times what a standard .44 mag bullet weighs (240 grains) at essentially the same velocity.

Well the 500 in a lever action is out, I read a Handloader Magazine today in which someone asked the same question. The editor Dave Scovilli said that the 500 generates too much gas pressure to be used in anything but a BLR. That seems to pretty much kill that thought.
