scattergun10 125
....or at least cover it up? I'm thinking of buying a friend's Saiga, but it's got that hideous "velcro patch" on the right side of the receiver. I know it's minor, but it detracts from the look of the rifle IMO. I'm wondering if I refinish with rattle can paint if it will improve the way it looks or just make it worse. I've heard the new Saigas don't have this. I might just wait until I can get a new one at a decent price, which might be quite a while, but oh well.
mancat 2,368
you can lightly grind the raised areas of the patch flush, then fill with an etching primer - this can be brushed in by hand, then lightly sanded down until flush with the surrounding steel. spray with a light coat of Duplicolor DE1634 which is a near exact match to the factory paint.
Billybobf 50
Light sanding and bondo glazing compound would probably cover it up as well
Sdustin 578
I was thinking of using some JB weld as filler. Good luck.
jdtravers 637
It is called stippling. Yes, you can take it down by sanding it flush with the rest of the surface. I use a small 1.500 diameter sanding disk on a pneumatic right angle sander to take it flush and blend with the receiver. Jack

My 7.62's not very deep, but the marking on my 5.45 seemed to go about halfway into the wall of the receiver, I read a while ago to fill it with JB weld, and sand it down, that's what I did, it's still a bit visible, but you have to be looking for it. jdtravers 637
You gotta kinda gauge it. Try using a small flat piece of steel for a sanding block, work it and see where you are at. At the least you will take it down to surface level and then try some type of fill. I would Tig Weld for a fill, but most of you guys don't have that available. JoeAK 337
I welded the extra pin holes, but I definitely didn't feel safe trying to weld up that big area. I'm fairly happy with the results with JB weld, so I'll leave it alone unless it decides to undo itself.
amd6547 2
I like it on mine...it's part of the history of the piece. Besides, when I'm shooting it, I never see it. Of course, you could just get a little brass plaque inscribed at the trophy shop...something like "presented by Mikhail Kalashnikov". 50yrs from now, some fool might believe it. semper299 284
Mine didn't bother me until I recently bought one that does not have it. Now it bugs the piss out of me. Problem I have is gun was parked and painted with Nurells Matt black. Its beautiful.....except for that damn velcro patch. I would have to get it refinished. Not worth it, imho.
