Vance665 225
My local Wal-Mart has all their turkey loads about half off. I got a few boxes of Federal "turkey thugs" 3" 1 7/8oz #4shot for $5 for a box of 10. Also Winchester super-X 3" 1 7/8oz #4 for $4 a box and they both run 1210fps. Has anyone used these particular loads in their Saiga 12? I was thinking they would be good for home defense.
David Mark 2,452
If you are ever attacked by turkeys in your home you should be good to go.
Mullet Man 2,114
Turkey thugs huh. Sonsabitches
Vance665 225
Better to have it and not need it. Turkeys are very mysterious and can be deadly. They are ninjas in their own environment.
csspecs 1,987
#4 Bird shot is still fairly small for anything other than small game or birds. #4 buck shot is more what you want. Here is a chart showing the different sizes. http://www.shotgunworld.com/amm.html
Vance665 225
Cool thanks. I didn't realize there was a difference between bird shot and buck shot sizes. No big deal I got them cheap.
gunfun 3,931
For the home invading sort of turkeys, and also other varmints: http://www.hornady.com/store/12-Ga-VX-4-Buckshot/ It's about the perfect recipe for idealized HD ballistics. Flite control type wad, 24 pellets of #4B at enough velocity that they should all be in the 13-14" penetration range. Doesn't get much better.
gunfun 3,931
For comparison, estimated recoil for the standard full power OOB load outa an S12, not accounting for the spread of recoil over the cycling of the action: Slightly spicier, but still manageable #4 Buck load. (My home rolled equivalent reduces by 2-3 pellets, and increases velocity slightly for recoil about equal to the standard OOB load) The Winchester turkey load from the OP ~ The first two will stop a bad guy, the third will make a mess of the bad guy and your shoulder. Note that it is more than double the free recoil energy of the buckshot that cops get a wimpified version of for "tactical LE grade"
Vance665 225
Sounds like fun to shoot. I might have to get more. I noticed all the $4 Winchester was sold out. Thanks for the info.
