  1. Yes, I had the same reservations about hacking on a new rifle but I really enjoyed the conversion. I had zero experience with AK's and minimal mechanical experience, and it was real straight forward for me. I had some minor issues, but I took my time and consulted this board. This board is a great resource with a lot of great members. As far as accuracy goes I can speculate that it going to be more accurate, the trigger pull is so much better. I never shot my gun prior to the conversion so I don't know. I had the parts and was house bound due to a blizzard so I decided to knock it out.
  2. Take a look at spikes tactical they have a good deal on carbine uppers and the mid length. They have a 50 coupon code on AR15.com. I think the price is like 475 carbine and 485 mid length. They have all the good features. Best deal I've seen.
  3. I've shot a lot of S&B in .223. I would not hesitate to shoot it in 308. It has decent accuracy is and is not too dirty.
  4. I just completed my first Saiga conversion. I used the Dinzag conversion kit, complete with hitch pins. I also purchased a retaining plate and decided to use it instead of the hitch pins. Is there any modification needed to the retaining plate? It seems to function well, but I thought I read it needs some custom fitting to function properly. Thanks.
  5. I decided to do a good cleaning after my conversion and used Gun Scrubber. Well it looks like I will re-painting the bottom of the receiver. I used Dura-coat and let it cure for five days. Well the paint came off with the Gun Scrubber. Looks like I will refinishing the receiver again. I will not be using Guns scrubber next time.
  6. The 308 is unique. Look at Dinzag's website for options. If you don't want a pistol grip you could use a thumb-hole type stock. I looked into it and decided to do Dinzag's drop in FCG and have been very happy with it.
  7. glad to hear you got it. what was the culprit? Culprit was me...LOL. I tried to install the hammer backwards and then I had a hard time with the hammer spring. I zip tied it and it didn't work so I just had to use muscle to fix it.
  8. Thanks for all the help. I could not have done it without all the help form this site. I finally completed my first conversion and am ready for my next one. I call this conversion my "Blizzard Battle Rifle" to commemorate the 36" snow fall that kept me out of work and provided me with the time to get it done. My only snag was the trigger group and BHO. That was a pain in the ass, next time it will be much easier.
  9. Congrats on the new rifle. I would first give the gun a good cleaning and make sure all the packing grease is off the firing pin. As far as the trigger the only option I'm aware of is to move the trigger. I just completed mine today and it wasn't too bad and I have zero mechanical experience.
  10. Thanks for the info. I have a Dinzag drop in unit, but will I give it a try. I kind of work on it for 30 minutes then I get frustrated. I guess I will pick it up after the Superbowl. Wanted to get in done this weekend. With 34" of snow it is a nice home bound project.
  11. I'm in process and everything was going smoothly until I tried to install the hammer and spring. I figured out the bho spring and the trigger, but I can't seem to line up the hole for the front hammer, bho assembly. I tried a zip tie around the spring, no luck. I'm thinking about reversing the order and putting the hammer in first. Any sugestions. I watched the video, but no luck so far. Thanks
  12. Welcome, Warning the Saiga platform is addictive. I have a 12, a 308 in restore mode and I'm actually thinking about the 5.45.
  13. Clinton plate removed. The two welds in the middle gave me a fight, but since I'm not reusing the trigger guard I gave it a butcher job. I was surprised how easy it was. Thanks for the encouragement! I hope the rest goes this easy.
  14. Thanks for the info. I will get he plate off and and go to the auto parts store.
  15. I received my order from dinzag on Wednesday and I'm getting ready to get the conversion started. I guess it will take a few days to complete with the refinishing of the receiver. I plan to take the Clinton plate off today and pic up some paint for the receiver. I plan to use Duracoat engine enamel any recommendations for a quick rattle can paint job? Thanks
  16. That would sure solve a major problem with the 308. What mags will it use?
  17. I see you are in the PG. I live very close and work in PG. I can't wait to get to TN. I am just waiting for the opportunity and I am out of here.
  18. Thanks, I am excited about doing the conversion. Dinzag was the only choice for me. He was responsive and he gets great reviews. I think the 308 is a good "first conversion" to get my feet wet with the Saiga stuff. If it goes well I may look for a 5.45 for my next project.
  19. Congrats, You'll love it! As far as the forearm goes, there's not anything functionally wrong with what comes on the rifle.I think most people change it because they want it to look like something different. (stock ak, etc) Thanks, I will keep the forearm and save some cash for my next Saiga.....
  20. Well after lots of reading and all your help. I finally placed my order to Dinzang. I got the conversion parts with the trigger guard, a saw grip and a basic tapco stock. I had to throw in T-shirt to wear when the job is done. I think I'm going to convert it before I even shoot it in stock trim. I would like to do a before and after if I can swing it. But I know when the parts get here I'll want to knock it out. Is there any real reason to put a new forearm on? Is heat a big problem with the stock forearm? Thanks
  21. Is the PG nut hole located in the "wishbone area" of the extended trigger? I took down my .308 and it it looked like the hole was there. Last question before I place my order. Do I need an AK Retaining Plate with my kit from Dinzag? Thanks
  22. I plan to take it out in stock configuration and run a few rounds through it soon. In the mean time I am getting my parts together for the conversion. I took a look inside it looks like the PG nut is drilled as far as I can tell the trigger hole is also drilled. Is there anything else to look for? I guess I will need to drill a trigger guard hole. I am new to the AK think and I can see the charm looking at the design. I need to get a Dremel and a few bits. I am planning on using the Dinzang FCG and trigger guard kit. As far as furniture I think I will go with K-Var Nato length and a
  23. I think I remember reading that there was custom work required with the stock conversion on that version of the 308. I considered it myself, but after reading a few posts It seemed more complicated and expensive. I decided to get a basic 308 and just do the basic conversion from Dinzang.
  24. G19 with +P ammo in a Fobus holster. I am looking to get a light weight 38+P for more discrete carry.
  25. Congrats, Is that a Pronghorn scope? That looks like the package deal I got a few weeks ago. How was the accuracy? Did the scope and mount hold zero? I want to shoot mine before I do the conversion, but I plan on ordering the kit from Dinzag next week.
