  1. Ok, so first off, a little bit about Vortex as a company. They are a fairly new American owned and operated company that is well known for matching or even beating the quality of industry standard optics, but at a fraction of the price. I've owned 2 pairs of binoculars of theirs and 1 riflescope, and I can honestly say I've never looked through better optics for the money. I owned a pair of Swarovski EL's (an 1800 dollar pair of bino's) until I looked through a friend's pair of Vortex binos that cost 370 dollars. I promptly sold the Swaro's, bought the Vortex's, and got my Glock as well as som
  2. That's great, I'm glad you're enjoying the sight! I'll pass this along to the guys over at Vortex on the AR15.com forum.
  3. Ok, here's my theory of what happened (based on your PM): By babying the bolt forward, you're not allowing it to close all the way. So, the firing pin is striking the primer, but only lightly because it's not as close to the round as it needs to be. When you pulled the bolt back to see what was up, it pulled out the unfired round and started to load the next round in the magazine which obviously can't chamber because the unfired round was still in the action, hence the gouge in the actual bullet. So go ahead and load up the magazine with however many rounds you want, pull the bolt back, an
  4. Crap, I really hope you haven't bought one yet. I might have seen this too late. I have a Vortex Strikefire for my AR that ROCKS! It comes with either a standard mounting ring or a regular ring, like for an AK. It's around 140-150, but you can find them cheaper on the AR15.com forum. I used to play around with cheap red dots until I saw one of these puppies at a gun show. They're just amazing. Here are some of the features: -1x30 (pretty standard) -60-80 thousand hours of battery life -Fully coated optics for better light transmission, and nitrogen purged for so it doesn't fog up interna
  5. While I think that installing the original factory BHO is great, something you should definitely look into is the safety lever mod you can do that allows it to act as a BHO. I think it is much more ergonomic than the factory one, especially considering that your trigger on a converted Saiga is right on top of where the BHO lever will be which causes some people to accidentally press it when their finger is on the trigger. *BUT*, that's only my preference, I'm just making sure you're aware of it. Good luck! Oh, and I just posted a thread w/pics about this recently. It should either be on th
  6. If you're "babying" the bolt forward, that might be a problem. If you are, you just need to make sure the chamber/barrel is clear, pop in a full mag, pull the bolt back and let it slam forward. If you're doing this and you're still having this problem, I'd contact the place you bought it from. Of course, it might be something simple that we could help you with. A picture is worth a thousand words, right? If you can't upload a picture, just upload it to your photobucket account or something and post the link.
  7. I really like the look of the Galil handguard. It gives it a bit of a more "classic" AK look while still pulling off the slightly more sophisticated black composite lool. I like black It's also very easy to put on, sturdy (I've put 300 rounds through mine with 0 issues as far as coming loose), and it's got a convenient little place to attach your sling. I'm a fan, especially for the money.
  8. YES! I'm an "advanced" member now. Do I get a prize??
  9. +1! I like iron. The battery never wears out, you never forget to turn on a switch, and it is simple. Well, -1 I DON'T like iron (thhbthbtbh ). J/k, irons are great if that's what you're used to. I've always been a red-dot fan because you don't have to take the time to line up the posts or anything like that, you just put the dot on the thing you want to shoot and ka-blam-o. AND you can do it with both eyes open. I think that's pretty nifty. But I agree, for AK's I wouldn't really say a red-dot is all that important. Now if I'm working with an AR, it's red-dot or bust, mainly
  10. Oh, and I also own an AR-15, so don't think I'm biased in the matter. I believe that each gun certainly has its place.
  11. Well, within about 200 yards the 7.62x39 round will hit "harder" than the .223, i.e., it will transfer more energy to the target. After than, due to the heavy weight of the bullet and the comparably lower velocity, the 7.62 will actually transfer LESS energy than the .223. So basically, within 200 yards the 7.62 transfers more energy than the .223, however past the range the .223 retains more energy. That said, the FBI has largely rejected the theory of energy transference in regards to what actually contitutes "knock-down power" in favor of the "bigger hole" theory, i.e., whatever makes a
  12. Actually, you can't really see it in the pic but I do have my AR-15 riser on the side rail of the optics mount, and the Vortex Strikefire red dot is sitting on that lol.
  13. You can reuse both the stock and the pistol grip, however I'm not sure if the pistol grip will work with the PG nut from Dinzag. I used a combination of two sheet metal screws, washers, and nuts to secure my pistol grip (I also reused the T6 Intrafuse stock) and it's not going ANYWHERE. You can't torque that thing hard enough to make it budge. So yeah, I started off with that same stock you have (Tapco T6 Intrafuse w/pistol grip, meant for an unconverted Saiga). So here's what I bought: -Tapco G2 FCG, single hook -Tapco AK-47 retainer plate -Assorted sheet metal screw set from Wal-ma
  14. Frick. You're right. My gun is worthless. And yes, that is a steak knice. But hey, that thing is SHARP. It'll cut you so bad you'll wish it didn't cut you so bad.
  15. Agreed 100%. I had no idea we had a former Assistant US Attorney in our midst! It's pretty refreshing to see pro-libery politicians lawyers standing up for their rights, and for the rights of all Americans. I definitely wouldn't expect to find one on this forum, considering that most people would probably view us as right-wing extremist gun nuts rather than freedom enthusiatsts (chuckle). I mean, not only do we own the evil black rifles, but we're modifying and customizing them too! Well I'm sure you did a heck of a job while you were in office, so my hat's off to you. I'm a young, op
  16. Dang, Nalioth don't mess around does he? I wouldn't say it like he did (no offense, just kind of tactless), but I agree I don't think dimples would make or break the deal. I find the Krebs to be one of the best builds on the market, however I think they're just ridiculously expensive for an AK. The whole idea of an AK is a cheap, mass-produced tank of a weapon. Without the cheap aspect, I think that just kind of goes against the philosophy of what an AK is supposed to be. Just my 2 cents. Not to mention, most of this stuff you could probably do on your own with the right know-how, sans tha
  17. So I've been wrestling with putting in my old BHO or modifying the safety lever like Dinzag et al. I opted for the latter (even though it made me VERY nervous to cut up my safety lever!) because 1) I've heard that some people accidentally depress the BHO when they're finger is on the trigger on converted Saigas and 2) it's easier to flip the safety up, pop in a new mag, and then just flip it down. It functions kind of like an AR BHO, and if you're using mags with BHO's I find it very, very convenient. Now I don't want to offend anyone who did it the other way, I'm just saying my reasons fo
  18. 9+1. If 10 rounds of Federal EFJM (Expanding Full Metal Jacket) won't do the job, then you probably should've just chucked your gun at the dude. When I shot the milkjug with the .40, it literally exploded and was torn into two different pieces. It went all the way through and I recovered it in the wooden backdrop. It measured .81 inches. FYI, the bullet on the right is a .380 Hydroshock fired from a Bersa Thunder. Nice little gun, nasty little bullet. That is a nasty little bullet. Would not want to be on the receiving side of that. I decided to get the 23 only because I can get a g
  19. FQ13, I thought we'd been through this. Trigger + AK retainer plate + PG&stock = 105$. You can pay even less by going with the plain KVAR stock and standard AK PG. The stock you want costs 60$. If you're going to do it, go all the way.
  20. HAHAHAHAHA that is one of the dorkiest looking setups I've seen in a while. But yeah, I think it may be illegal. A PG + folding/telescoping stock = 922r. I could be wrong though. It's all a bunch of bullcrap.
  21. UTG just came out with the exact same rail you have on your gun, except it comes with a quick-detach lever instead of the three screws. I've been hearing good things about it. I have the same rail you do, and I liked it so much I didn't really even look around for others. UTG is totally awesome for certain things--and totally suck at others, but I think this is one of the awesome things.
  22. Oh yes, that's one thing I forgot to mention. One small minus for the Bushnell is that it comes with very nice form-fitted rubber lens caps--but they aren't flip up, nor are they attached in any way to the sight. They're just pop on pop off so I would think they're very easy to lose. The magnifier is a screw on.
  23. I use a freeware called Photoscape. It's great. Resizing is a cinch.
  24. Excellent. Go for it!
