  1. birdman2scuba, pictures of the retainers and a brief discription on what you did to install them would be good (also, what the retainers came from would be useful). I've been looking at a variety of different handguards to install on my project, each has it's own set of unique problems. Also what you used to mount the retainers to the gas tube and barrel (JB Weld, Silver solder, Mig, Tig, or spot welded?) Last, can you remove the wood to change to a different AK style if you wanted to. Mark

    WOOHOO

Mine hit St Louis on 5/4, still waiting for the spring/follower. The 8 rounder's a long mo'fo. Spring and follower came in on 5/6........
  3. I ran across this sight on a link from an on line metals broker. Emachine shop.com-on line machine shop-http://www.emachineshop.com/ I do a lot of hobby projects with bench top mills, lathes, welders, etc and have no real word training as a machinist (just a lot of coaching from buds that are tool and die makers by trade). Anyway, if you had real world know how as a machinist, or even in CAD this site makes me wonder what you could have produced and at what cost. Looks like you design and submit your project online and they produce it using several offered methods including plastic injectio
  4. My Hakko 24 showed up today and might have a problem? I'm getting a close patern double image on all the patterns and light settings. Is there an adjustment for this or should I just exchange it for another. Almost looks like your looking at the same pattern on 2 sheets of glass. I don't have the pistol lense installed, but when I did it didn't effect the problem at all.
  5. Bvamp, thanks bud...the rear sight and front block are items I wanted a good look at. AKM uh, I might have to take a look at K-VAR and see what they have to play with. Wonder if they did anything with the gas block to increase dwell time ????
  6. That's ok, I can put a mic on mine. It just seemed a little odd to me that something termed as Special Weapons would limit its use by not having a threaded barrel. After thinking about it, I guess that at the ranges it would typically be used, there's really no reason for an internal choke. Lock breachers and flash hiders are typically externally threaded devices.
  7. Did any of you get a receipt mailed first? I received a receipt for payment today, but no parts yet-just wondering.
  8. Can anyone post pictures, or hook me up with links to pictures of the Saiga 12 SWAT model. Limited luck so far, the post on sight/flash hider has me thinking. I need multiple views. Mark
  9. Anyone have a clue where that damned thing came from? I've looked at several of my sources and ran several searches with no results.
  10. Keep searching, it's here somewhere within the last few weeks....Someone took an old style ACE receiver block and mounted an ACE stock and pistol grip to it so they didn't have to move the FCG. As far as 922r goes, you'll have to count partts up and see.
  11. Here goes, where 'd ya get it and does it thread on interanally, externally, or is it held on w/ set screws? Have to say, that's a good look with the front sight.
  12. I think the problem with the angle has to do with folds to the right, the ACE stocks are made to be used either LH or RH fold. I ran into this with a Galil folder I mounted on a WASR/Saiga 12. You either have a little angle, or in my case, drop the stock slightly. If you don't there won't be enough clearance to the bolt handle to shoot it with the stock closed. I also found that very little change in angle at the receiver can show up as quite a bit in terms of distance at the end of the stock.
  13. Does anyone have an idea of what you can get away with in terms of shortening a barrel without causing problems with the gun cycling? I plan on taking down a 22" IC version to around 19" and having it threaded for an internal choke. I have the ability to open the ports up, but would rather not if 19" is safe. I'm a little confused about porting the chamber being hack, wouldn't you overcome some of the pressure woes by adding additional volume? Most of the rifles named have the ability to run very fast cycle rates and have much higher pressures generated. The 12 to me would be a little differen
  14. Yeah Tony, your probably right but it turns into one of those damned if you do,damned if you dont things in my case. This is the problem, I'm a freakin car tech. You know the type. I work on new cars by day (working shop foreman for 6000 car fleet), then go home to feed my addiction by changing and modding everything I touch. Oh yea, I buy tools.... lots & all types. Then I picked up one of these Saiga 12's on a whim. I shot it once just to see how it worked then I proceeded to gut it for the conversion. I want it to be a blend of style and function-some of which may not go hand in hand. T
  15. I have a KOBRA that I picked up from Tantal that I'm real happy with (mounted on an AK). Priced a little higher than you were looking for at $180 shipped (includes mount). Tantals has several others to choose from, some priced a little less. I also have one of the low style mounts that you discribed, I'll call it average in construction-haven't mounted optics on it yet but I ordered a Hakko 24 for it, to be used on my Saiga 12. I also have a pretty decent closed tube style made by Taso that was really great for the price (under $50), but it was used for snap shooting on a pump class paintball
  16. I'm confused??? I'd assume that the SWAT model has a changeable choke style barrel, is the flash hider a slip on? I didn't think the barrel had enough meat to cut threads on both the inside and outside without being too thin-anyone know for sure? Man-anyone have a good, clear (large) picture of either of these that you can post.
  17. I'm going to cut down a 22" barrel and have it threaded for an internal choke and don't know squat about chokes in general. I want something that's an internal screw in and has rifled slug chokes available. Should I go with factory Saiga chokes, or U.S. domestic made choke sets? If I have the barrel threaded for factory Saiga chokes, does anyone have the thread specs so I can see if any of my local shops can produce them If I use a U.S. manufactured set, can anyone recommend one, or a gun style to use (Browning, Remington, etc). Thanks for the help, Mark
  18. Nothing looks very practical for a weekend shooter....this is going to be more of a project gun than anything else. Thanks for the info guys, was just looking for ways to calm things down under rapid fire conditions. For now a buffer and 1" pad will do.
  19. Not on there yet-just resting for some pics while I think things out...... Looks like mounting the Izzy grip is going to be a trip, figured I'd save it for last. Actuallythe grip won't be a hard fabrication mount, but using the grip with the heat shield, or part of the shield will be. I fight the urge to tear into it every day. The grip isn't a bad buy, I picked this one up off the net for $30ish (with the shields) if anyone else wants to give it a shot and save me some headaches
  20. Thanks Tony, looks like bling bling it is. That explains a lot about why all you see is flash hiders then. Can anyone elaborate on using internal chokes with slip on hiders....
  21. Just wondering, does anyone make an actual muzzle brake for the Saiga 12, or are they all just flash hiders? Hiders look nice, but a functional brake would be better. I put an AK 74 style on my WASR and it made all the difference in the world in the way the gun feels when you shoot it. Best case would be a steel slip on brake (that I can silver solder) if anyone knows of one, or one I could modinfy if you have an idea ( I have a small home work shop w/ mill and lathe-also 2 tool & die maker buds). Also, I plan on taking the barrel down a few inches from 22", and having it threaded for an
  22. Those are what I've been hunting, nothin on Ebay or GA for the last week....
  23. I'm looking for a slip on style bird cage flash hider for a Saiga 12. Anyone with one for sale, or leads on one please contact me. Thanks, Mark
  24. If nothing else, a detailed template would be good. I've never seen one (new to Saiga's), but isn't there a bend involved? Also, some spring details, or could you just use one from a 7.62 model that seem to be readily available? Whatever happened to the items on the Saiga 12 main page-I've only been around for a few months but nothing they made appears to be for sale anymore?
