  1. Mancat I do understand that but it is not very clear what and which components are interchangeable between the AK platforms. Example the AKM hammer differs in design from one in a AK-74M or AK-100 series. They will work but one will produce more drag and friction on the carrier than the other. Also the sear hook on the AKM is taller by approximately .150" this is quite a big difference but mawill not affect any performance other than drag the carrier when the hammer is engaging the sear hook but no difference will be seen or felt while the disconnector and hammer are engaged after firing. .223 Fail

Sounds more like bullet guide misalignment or excessive fileing of the mag catch. I have the same mags and an early dinzag bullet guide and I have shot just about any bullet type as well as bullet weight. I'd bet the bullet guide is just a smidgen too far to the right of the receiver forcing the cartridges low left. It can be remedied by carefully opening up the bullet guide rivet opening and hole and sliding it over just a touch. Also if your using a screw to hold the bullet guide make sure it hasn't walked loose from firing blue loctite can be your best friend when it comes to preventing
  3. Chances are it will be either export or left in a prototype phase. With Putin in charge there is a chance that the defense ministry may make a small purchase for special forces.
  4. Magazine curvature is different but they will lock up the same as long as you trim the shelves on the mag and shorten the interdiction tab. As far as feeding its hit and miss my Saiga will feed from a partially loaded AK-74M mag but will have difficulty when loaded up beyond 13rounds. Changing the follower could help but the internal mag width is slightly larger on the AK-74M mags.
  5. The 5.45 barrel chamber end is 22mm but as far as gas block and front sight block they should spec the same as any AK-100 or AK-74M. Unless you have a .591" diameter barrel(heavy .223 barrel) they should fit up fine.
  6. Well as it turns out the Saiga .223 is actually a AK-103 receiver and trunion. Yes I just smacked the hornets nest here but hear me out. I'm currently building a heavy barreled AK-47 with a milled receiver and I've come up with a lot of info about the AK. First off the differences of the AK-74 and AK-47 are obvious but the differences of the AK-100 series compared to the AK-74M are not as obvious. A typical AK-74M and AK-100 series share carriers as well as bolt dimensions(aside form caliber differences). The receivers are also the same with the exception of the front trunion. The spec is a
  7. Any others? I've got one good bolt but I would like another.
  8. Just like the topic says does any one know of any that exist. From What I read this is an option http://www.k-var.com/shop/ak-101s_extractor-spring.html?page=1. Any one have any experience or knowledge if they can be interchanged?

Here is the wear caused by the added upward pressure of the Arsenal trigger group. As you can see the underside of the ejector has been rubbed and the paint and some of the material has been removed.

The taller sear hook is the Arsenal and the shorter is the Saiga factory sear hook with the Arsenal disconnecter attached. On the left is the Arsenal and on the right the Saiga with the Arsenal disconnecter installed.

I need another factory trigger/disconnecter, the hammer is not the problem. The problem is from the Arsenal sear being over .125" way too tall and allowing the factory or Arsenal hammer to sit way too high making it place upward tension on the bolt carrier and bolt. Unless someone with a 100% factory unaltered Saiga can show me case dents then I am 99% sure the dents are due to aftermarket trigger components.

Well I may have finally hit the nail in the head but I need some input. My Saiga has been converted and the Arsenal Single Stage Trigger was used for the trigger assembly. Now the other thing which I will try to photograph is the wear on the the ejector. I believe the trigger altered the bolts rearward travel from straight back to straight back then up over the hammer face while moving to the rear. My theory for the case dent was confirmed when I lined up the original trigger/disconnecter with the Arsenal trigger/disconnecter I found the Arsenal was close to an 1/8" or more taller than th
  13. When I got my first Saiga, I wondered about the purpose of all the holes in the tube container. I had a hunch that the AK was supposed to be pretty self-contained, and I figured the holes were purposeful, but it wasn't intuitive for me. Needed a video like this to fully spell it out. Later when I got an Arsenal and I could store the handy tube in the buttstock, it occurred to me that the AK is absolutely awesome -- a MacGyver gun. It probably won't ever be quite as practical as my shotgun for home defense, or my subcompact for concealed carry, but I can definitely see why it's a true re
  14. Usually the Saiga kiss does not appear until a few hundred rounds of ammo are shot. It took mine close to 300 for it to start and close to 500 for severely dented cases (brass bananas). Working on my modification to correct that little issue.

Well here is the update. 45% of my brass was salvageable. 14 out of 31 pieces of brass are ok to reload. It seems my next step will be the final step. I will have to open up the ejection port on the dust cover even more. I will post a picture of the next alteration to the dust cover. Also the 15% stronger spring is a big increase my groups shifted over 6" higher than what they used to be. 5.56 loads seem to cycle much easier compared to the heavy hit I normally feel on my buffer. It seems there is a velocity increase with all ammo no chronograph data to support it yet but I will try to get

Well guys new spring from Wolff Gunsprings ordered through Brownells it is 15% stiffer according to their web site. It feels much stiffer than the factory spring and it should slow the bolt speed down and should help prevent the brass from turning into a banana. My modified top cover has been altered even more and during hand feeding and extraction testing it will consistently eject the brass in the same location as it would without the top cover this is stage two. When I reinstalled the factory top cover the brass ejection was inconsistent and would launch the brass in a 4 foot area of rando
  17. Glad you like your rifle. One of my projects is a modified dust cover its not complete yet but if your into the tacticool you may like this mod. Nikon optics are very high quality for the cost. Keep on enjoying your new Saiga because it only gets better.
  18. The 223 cartridge has a very flat trajectory so boresighting is almost useless unless optics are used. Also poi will vary according to the ammunition used and bullet style. There are many different FMJ designs and some are more ballisticly efficient in flight than others. Barnaul (Monarch and Bear ammo) seem to have a very sleek profile and the bullet's length is longer than any other .223 FMJ bullet I have seen yet. The bullet length is over .700" long. In most cases over .200" longer than American made bullets. Try Federal .223 and the Federal American Eagle Tactical (XM193) will have a hi
  19. For me the best group has been shot with Prvi Partizan 55gr soft points. Grouping was 2" on iron sights I can guarantee it is much better. Just got my K-Var optics mount and waiting for my check for a scope and rings. These rifles will shoot very well with good ammo and a good shooter. I believe my rifle is capable of much better. The Saiga 223 has a heavier barrel when compared to all other Saigas currently. Also with good magazines and some good lubrication the Saiga 223 is highly reliable. The saiga can be shot dry as well with no risk of failures. Just a little side note the 223 saiga

The only complaint I have about my Saiga is the brass being so beat up. If the issue was resolved I would have no complaints. Keep the updates coming. Thanks for all the work going into this. I will test the new spring with the factory dust cover and my stage 1 dust cover. I will keep you guys posted on my results. Some time within a month I will be trying another modification, this one will be done to the gas tube. I will be ordering another gas tube and modifying the gas porting on the tube. That will be an extensive modification as well as a write up.

Wolff extra power spring on the way. Case dents are less but I believe one of the causes of the dent is that the rifle is over gased for general shooting. I think this is done to allow increased reliability under harsh conditions. For most of us shooters that reload our version of reliability is no missfeed, failure to feed, failure to eject or failure to fire without destroying spent brass.

Mine did not for a long time but after the 500 round mark it just got worse and worse. Mine also is an 09 version 3. I think the spring has settled but I am working on the cover project first then I will attempt a spring swap.
  23. Its not a compatibility issue it is just that the armory does not install the military spring in the Saigas more than likely for legal reasons. I think the Wolff gun springs 15% heavier recoil spring would be stiffer than the factory spring and would give the Saiga the higher military grade performance it should have. Sent an email to Wolff gun springs to see if the dimensions will work, no reply just yet.
  24. No I mentioned that those specific parts will carry over from the AK 101 series but the recoil springs do not. The factory AK 101 spring I believe is stiffer.

Well my brass is in the truck but we have an 83% success rate. Out of 6 shots 5 cases were salvageable all with the AK kiss and the one with a dent that was smaller but still not relaodable. Going to pull the opening back another 1/8" and keep the same angle and retry if by new years. Ammo used was Federal American eagle 55gr commercially loaded ammo and the other Barnaul 55gr ammo the steel was just kissed and so was 2 of the brass cases.
