  1. Maybe I'll get a bayonet. Not sure if I can get away with a couple...lol. It's cold in the dog-house this time of year.
  2. Thanks Jetmech. I'm going to call Classic and ask about the mags. It looks like a single stack. [edit] It is a double-stack but I can't confirm if it is a Century build. Also, no side optic mount. I've never held a Century build in my hands but reviews seem to be mixed. I'd like to click this and buy it right now but will cross my fingers and hope for more opinions from forum users.
  3. $479. Anybody have one of these? If so, what say you.
  4. Remove the receiver cover, main spring and bolt assembly. Under a bright light try to observe the area of the mag that is preventing it from locking in place. I've found that typically the feed lip and or edges need to be filed lightly. I've also seen brand new Circle 10s that have different angles on the rear mag catch. Make certain you have (just enough) clearance on the forward portion of the mag before touching that. I use a dental pick to make sure. Once you have enough clearance on the front - stop. No additional filing will make it fit. That's the point where you need to look carefu
  5. lol...I DO NOT have a Slide-Fire stock btw.
  6. Nope...I had two converted Saigas on the bench. We talked later about the "Slide-Fire" stock and he predicted it will be banned soon. Also predicted a "crack-down" on these conversions done by owners. I described my parts count and he insisted it doesn't matter. Mine have compliance parts to spare and I don't need to count mags. It did get me to thinking though...although I have no intention of selling...what if I did?
  7. Met a friend of a friend at the range who happens to be the owner of a firearm business. He told me it was illegal to work on (in this context - convert) one's own firearm. He was adamant and I did not argue. Just throwing that out there...I believe he is wrong. [EDIT] Sorry about the by by thing in title. Still on first first coffee.
  8. I have the PA md-06 on a MI lower with a Palm upper. I finally got to test it at the range. On an 8" X 8" target I am unable to see the smaller diamonds on the corners of the target @ 50 yds. What I learned is that I need glasses although I'm not really sure I could ever see something that small without magnification. I can see the larger diamond in the center target and can hit it every time but I need the spotting scope to confirm this. This setup is way lighter than my other one equipped with a 3" X 9" with a UTG removable side mount/SGM quadrail. That one is heavier but I can reach out to
  9. It's weird that they stamp the receivers .223Rem yet in the manual it says both. If it is done to make importing easier in some crazy way, why are the 7.62 models stamped 7.62? I wish I had the tools and know-how to measure it myself. Nodody likes an unsafe firearm and I wish they would make it positively clear. Throw the question into a search box and about a million results pop up.
  10. I'll be testing a Midwest Industries rail/P.A.L.M upper/Primary Arms micro next week. I chose the non-saiga specific model and I can still see my irons through it. First impression is that it is very light weight and fastens securely. I also have the SGM quad on another .223. I took away the tiny up/down movement by bending the pin on the gas tube until it snapped on nice and tight. No more wobble.
  11. I got mine from Dinzag and it seems like a no-brainer. I can't think of a reason not to use the plate. It made the whole process easier, especially holding everything together while pulling down the BHO spring. I used Spider Wire (synthetic fishing line) instead of dental floss. Here is a link to Dinzag's (made by Power Custom)...it does look a little different than the one on CSS. http://www.dinzagarms.com/misc_parts/akretp.html
  12. The retainer plate makes it very easy. No modifications are required. The plate fits tight against the receiver in the notches of the axis pins and is held in place by the safety selector.
  13. Nick!, somebody will come along soon and answer. I have the same gas tube and have to answer the same question before I buy a hand guard. Asking first is a good idea. That's how I ended up with the extra gas tube...lol. I bought first - asked questions later.
  14. Half the fun is planning out the build. I'm looking at this hand guard. http://www.mississippiautoarms.com/aluminum-ak47-ak74-quad-rail-by-midwest-industries-p-2677.html I bought an ak gas tube from Dinzag a while back erroneously. Need to figure out which retainers I need to get. I've got the SGM quadrail on the first one but there is a tiny bit of up/down wobble. The SGM techs explained that by bending the pin on the rear of the gas tube I can take out the wobble. I don't have an optic on the SGM so I'm ok with it. It does get a little warm after a few mags. Decisions, decisions...
  15. Grinding away the sporter plate didn't scare me a bit. I was a little spooked about grinding on the receiver so I'm glad I didn't have to. Call me chicken but I'd rather throw away a messed up mag as opposed to throwing away a messed up receiver. [1] Got another one on the way @ $299.99. I'm probably going in a little deeper this time. Gonna cut off the tang and weld on a plate. Maybe get a folder - not sure yet. That will be a little nerve-racking. [1] I have a tendency to do things the hard way...but I'm happy with the results on my first conversion. Ran like a champ at the range aga
  16. My wife bought some parchment paper. Today I have to drive by the local VFW. I'm going to print a copy and drop it off.
  17. I noticed something last night about the Circle 10 mags. A ordered a batch of them but didn't take them all from the pkgs. The catch on the rear of just one of them was clearly not identical to the others. So not only do the rifles vary - the mags do too. If you have several you intend to fit look at all of them closely before doing anything. What needs to be done to one may not apply to them all.
  18. I hope I never have to get in a gunfight. If I did, it would be because someone threatened me or mine with deadly force leaving me absolutely no other option. Shots fired at me with the "cool" flash better be good! I'll spot ya a mile away! No ideas on where to buy another .223 from a forum vendor? Dinzag, CSS, MAA and the others have all been great to deal with. I really try my best to buy locally but I'll only go so far.
  19. I know. I'm just kidding around. My neighbor just ordered one from CTD mainly for the amazing muzzle blast...lol. Cool? Possibly yes. Helpful in a gunfight?. Definately No.
  20. I think maybe I'm just hooked on tinkering and looking for something to do. So far I've run quite a few XM193, PMC X-Tac 62gr., Rem .223 UMC, PMC .REM .223, and a few others without a hitch through all the mags I've had to hit with the dremel. I'm saving a few Surefires in case something unexpected happens to my BG. Now that my coversion is complete maybe I just need to do another one...lol. Where to buy though? CTD has them for $350. As hard as I try to buy local I see them in shops *used* for more??? The final touch was the Phantom flash hider - which I'm a little disappointed in. At nig
  21. Jim, are the Weigers available from any forum sponsors? So far I haven't had any problems with Circle 10, OEM, Surefire, and *gasp* even Promags with bullet guide. Very minor filing is all thats required but if I could find some Weigers I'd like to give them a try.
  22. This poem was read aloud at a WWII Veteran's funeral I recently attended at the request of the deceased. The reader served with and remained friends with the man who passed away. I was so moved that I requested a copy and the Gentleman happily complied. It contains hand-written notes and must be preserved. I uploaded it to scribd for others to download and print. Share it with a Vet. You might make someone's day. "A Soldier, His Prayer" Chaplain Oran Zaebst 1940 102nd Cavalry Regiment “Essex Troup” The file is too large to upload here or I would. 23. @ saigasturn. Ok, hang on. I finished mine yesterday but two friends local to me are ordering parts and want to use it first.
  24. I called SGM and spoke to a tech about another issue (I have an SGM Quad Rail and he explained how to eliminate the tiny wobble on my .223). I asked him about this steel-reinforcement question in the OP. He told me they do occasionally make improvements to the polymer but was not aware of any steel being added to the mags. It's not much of an issue for me now that I have Dinzag's ramp installed and a supply of Circle 10 mags. I have enough Surefire mags to keep a few with the feed lip intact in case something goes wrong with my bullet ramp. If that were to occur I can remove the ramp and c
  25. My Lufkin micrometer tells me the O.D. measured as close as I can get to the rear of the FSB is 0.564". Can anyone please confirm that is a reliable point to take my measurement? I'd like to wait until I have the Phantom Flash Hider in my hand before removing the shroud because I don't believe I want to remove all of it. I'm pretty sure the parts below are correct but would prefer to be completely sure before I place my order with Dinzag. # PFH1410 - $30 - For 14x1 LH barrels - common for most AK's with 0.551" to 0.569" barrel o.d.'s # DIE14X1LH - $30 - M14X1LH Die for 0.551" to 0.571"
