  1. Now that I think about it, I do remember calling Greg(?) at CSS and asking about this before I ordered the conversion parts. He said he didn't think there would be problems just leaving it out... maybe that retaining plate that comes with the CSS kits helps? CSS does advertise a "modified" Tapco G2 FCG in their conversion kits. I just dropped all the parts in and the only thing I had to alter slightly was the safety lever - I just had to file off a tiny amount to allow it to clear inside the receiver.
  2. Once you find a gas tube (maybe try the marketplace here), use some blue Loctite on that Carolina Shooter's Supply lower retaining bracket and tighten down the screws evenly. I have one and it never moves with Loctite and the set screw. Also, there's a little leaf tension spring on your stock Saiga gas tube keeping some pressure between the tube and the rear sight block. You can take it off, a little filing might be necessary, and fit it to your new AK gas tube for a good fit without wobble.
  3. I'm just going to echo some other people's posts... ...but on the Saiga rifles... I'd leave it out. On the Saiga 12's, I'd leave it in. On a Saiga Rifle, a loaded mag can be inserted quite easily with the bolt closed. The S12's can be a little more of a pain to insert a loaded mag on a closed bolt. ...secondly... I didn't add any sort of washer or anything to compensate after removing the BHO. I don't really get any play or wobble and have put right around 1000 rounds through my 7.62x39 Saiga without one single malfunction of any kind. I'm not saying that other rifles won't
  4. I think I finally have my 7.62x39 Saiga set up the way I like it... predictable consistent accuracy, durable, reliable, lightweight (6.5lbs unloaded!) This was my first conversion and first AK, did all the work myself, very rewarding. 5. Does it stay centered to the bore from gun to gun? I know when I move my RS mount that is centered to the bore on my x39 to my s12, that it is severely off to the left of center. I find the adjustability to be welcome. From gun to gun, I can't say for sure... my friend who I'll be seeing soon has an S12 though, I'll check. He has a Chaos Titan setup on it, but if he flips up the rear hinge, maybe we can get the optic on the side rail and see.

  7. You could look into a Chaos 7.62x39 Titan setup. http://www.chaosus.com/cgi/commerce.cgi?preadd=action&key=762_TITAN_RAIL
  8. ^ It was basically that. I do strange things in the winter as a result of cabin fever. I work outside and get too many days off for my own good when the weather turns to snow and ice.
  9. Yeah, I'd second just mounting the optic forward since you already have the quad rail, might as well utilize the top rail of it. As others have said, converting the rifle by moving the trigger group forward and then installing a bullet guide to accept standard AK mags is a huge, huge benefit. Check this page: http://www.carolinashooterssupply.com/category_s/1864.htm As for muzzle brakes, if you're going to use one, I personally am happy with the basic, cheap slant brake. It doesn't do much for recoil or flash but it does eliminate muzzle rise (AK muzzles want to jump up and to the
  10. I have an update on this. I posted this thread on the AK Files too and here's a copy of what I wrote afterward in that thread... ---- Just an FYI to those who did read and/or respond to this thread... I have since taken the heat shield out of the wooden lower handguard. It was, as they say nowadays, an epic fail. I took my rifle to the range with said heat shield installed and the lower handguard was smoking and starting to smell like burning finish/oil/wood/etc after only 50-60 rds...! That wasn't mag-dumping either. Needless to say, as someone mentioned earlier in this thr
  11. Not TWS, but here's a similar option... http://www.chaosus.com/cgi/commerce.cgi?preadd=action&key=762_TITAN_RAIL ...haven't seen one on a 7.62x39 in person but a friend has the Titan Rail on his S12 and it's nice.
  12. ...I put a heat shield in a Polish laminate wood lower handguard last night... I took a heat shield out of a Russian polymer lower handguard and all I had to do to get it to fit into the wood handguard was cut off about 1/8" off of the top of each side of the heat shield with a dremel. I wish I would have thought to take a "before" picture but I just did it on a whim and didn't bring the camera down with me. Hopefully that explanation makes some sense. This did two things, one, it got rid of the rails that fit into the grooves of the polymer handguard and two, it made it so that the to
  13. To Lone Eagle and Spacehog's points, my one and only Saiga didn't have threads under the shroud when I cut it, but I bet... if someone has this problem and doesn't have a torch... that you could spray some PB Penetrating Catalyst between the shroud and the threads, let it sit for a few minutes, then go at it with channel locks. I have had good luck with PB Penetrating Catalyst breaking Loctite. Also, I had to use that stuff to break the original Saiga Monte Carlo buttstock screws. Those were on there really tight too.
  14. My two cents on the whole thing is... if I was planning to use a pistol grip, I'd go ahead and do the FCG conversion without question. If I was going to leave a Saiga unconverted, I'd put the Monte Carlo stock back on there, attach a 2-point sling, get a number of 10 round magazines and call it a lightweight, fairly handy "Ranch Rifle." ... or ... to go slightly further... it could be fun to try to make a Jeff Cooper scout rifle... in fact, a Jeff Cooper scout rifle using an unconvered Saiga .308 with 5-10 rd mags is possible... Cooper's specifications (taken from Wikipedia) for a
  15. I have a similar hand guard and at first, it had some slight up/down play when installed with the CSS lower hand guard retainer. I currently use a lower hand guard retention spring (like they sell at CSS and other places) and it keeps it tight... but if you don't want to pay a few dollars + shipping for just that, a small shim of aluminum foil folded over itself a handful of times (until it's maybe 1/16" or slightly thicker) and wedged between the hand guard's heat shield and the barrel works just fine. Not a huge piece of foil... the surface dimensions of mine were about 1" long and .5" w
