  1. Ever notice the serial numbering on the wasr parts? The serial numbers can often be dated back to the 20 or 30 year old original issued rifles. They cut up old worn out shit guns into parts and either sell the parts as kits or recycle them by rebirthing the old parts into sporter single stack rifles called WASRs. Century International Arms buys both the junk parts and the WASRs. Their reputation with either type is infamous for trying to compete with Hesse for the title of the worst AK products ever distributed. No thanks. My properly built Russian rifles from Izhmash or Molot with f
  2. I have a huge 32 power scope I have been trying to mount on the rifle for a while and the side scope mounts have not been working well enough to my liking. The scope is temporary for a project and then later I might mount a much smaller 4 power scope or an aimpoint. The longer sight radius is very much welcomed by myself. The mount does add just under a pound to the rifle. The scope going on weighs 24 ounces. Add in the rings and overall its a little under 3 pounds added.
  3. The picture with an orange-brown background is of an actual Izhmash rail modded select fire rifle. Notice the extra selector notch on the receiver. I just put that up for reference. Even the Russian President Dmitry Medvedev loves the hinged receiver rail concept. If this catches on, maybe all new Izhmash rifles will have such a rail. I guess time will tell.
  4. Well, since I don't expect to see the Izhmash rail modded saigas showing up at RRA any time soon, I got the closest thing I could find. Man I just can't believe I went this long without one. Its awesome. I finally understand why Mark Krebbs is praised so much. The sight radius of a standard 16 inch barreled saiga from what I measured is about 14 inches. The sight radius on this specific rifle with the peep sight is 28 inches. The rear sight has two aperatures. I took the picture through the smaller pin hole aperature. The other larger aperature works more like a ghost ring sight. The ra
  5. Saigas do not have bullet guides. Bullet guides must be installed in a factory Saiga so you can use military magazines in it. All military Kalashnikovs have bullet guides. I don't have an original AK103 magazine that Oleg sells in the UK to make the comparison but does the 103 mag have the same height front lip as the saiga propriety mags?
  6. Krylon is easy to use but after 30 rounds fairly fast the krylon on the barrel gets soft until it cools down. Happened to mine. With VHT brake caliber paint, no softening and it can stand 900 F.
  7. If someone picks up some hornady vmax 5.45 ($20 for 50 rounds)and does a water jugs reaction test I would love to compare to 7.62x39.
  8. Tapco is not very professional grade but I guess its about how many corners can be cut and still convince the unknowing buyers to purchase at an acceptable price point.
  9. The extractor blade tip would need some material removed to adjust for the wider radius otherwise only the ends would make contact.
  10. Probably not. Too much material to remove. 5.45 bolt next to a 7.62x39
  11. An AKM carrier is higher than a 74 type or a 100 series like the saiga. It will not fit. I tried it with a few different AKM variants. I posted a few pictures of this in the past. The carrier arm will not slip into the 74 style rear sight block opening. i got a romanian akm carrier to fit in my saiga, it slid back and forth but the bolt will not go in, only the carrier. The AKM carriers that I tried out fit into the track and moved forward but stopped when the top of the arm brushed the top of the inner gas block. The AKM bolts have a shorter head which also will not work with
  12. I got to try my saiga sgl 21 this weekend for the first time. The arsenal 74 style brake worked perfect. Off of a table rest the rifle did not move up at all when fired. I watched someone else shoot it standing and observed the muzzle tip. The muzzle tip barely moved when fired from a standing position. I have fired an AKM with a slant brake in the past and distinctly remember much more rifle movement with the slant brake both vertical and horizontal. I was able to shoot some quick triple taps onto a close target about 10 yards away with very much improved muzzle control over no brake or a

  14. Well, I got a few but I can't edit the original post to show it. Don't need any more thanks guys.
  15. A pistol can legally have any length barrel under federal law. There is no limit. A vertical grip on a pistol makes it a classified AOW which is regulated by the NFA and that requires a tax stamp minimum to posess. Lack of a stock does not make it a pistol. This is actually determined by whether or not the receiver has ever been stocked.
  16. Need both for a 7.62x39 let me know how much.
  17. This idea is very workable but the cartridge is what keeps the rear bolt pressing back against the trunnion contact points. Without a cartridge, there is a bit of gap play. A safe way to work this idea with a real ammo case might be to pull a bullet from a cartridge and dump the powder then handfeed it into the chamber then use valve lapping complound from an auto parts store between the bolt rear lugs and the trunnion contact points. Then work the bolt rotation back and forth with the empty dummy cartridge pressed into the bolt face. The lapping compound would eventually polish the lug-tru
  18. i thought about this as well but i'm not that familiar with that fcg retainer spring. but hey it can't be that damn hard or could it. i might just try it looks like the safety pops out then as follows but putting it back i'm not sure how it hooks to the mainspring pin. of course there's the retainer plate A retainer plate would be a good upgrade in any case. I got a plate in all my Ak rifles.
  19. Before you go throughall this, remove the hammer and cycle the bolt with a real ammo cartridge. If real ammo cycles in and locks, then I wouldn't worry about the snap caps not doing the same. I been thinking of making a sandbox to aim and cycle live ammo in the house. Should it acidently fire, the sandbox would catch the bullet and stop it completely. 6 inches of solid packed sand will work but I might make a 12x12x12 inch box just for a margin of error.
  20. but shouldn't it still have a problem closing without the dummy round. is there any thing i can do to fix this. Yes. If the actual problem is extra material (chrome plating) on the trunnion points that rub the bolt, then removing the extra material will fix the problem. The tricky part is removing equal amounts from both sides of the trunnion so that one side does not contact the bolt rear more and recieves more bolt thrust that the other side. This would end up cracking your bolt eventually. A better fix might be polishing the bolt face down by 2 thousandths of an inc
  21. The trunnion lug-lock points got chromed? That affects headspace. Chroming those closed you headspace a bit. A few thousandths of an inch will close that enough.
  22. Damm this thread is steering quickly into some weird thugish gay prison porn and Surly isn't in the middle of it. If the WASR romanian franken AK gives you wood, then more power to you. That leaves more Russian for the rest of us.
