Problems with birdshot

Recommended Posts

Anybody else have trouble with birdshot? Took my S12 out and on the #1 gas setting, it wasn't cycling back far enough. On the #2, I was getting stove pipes and extraction issues. Couldn't get through a mag without at least 30% FTE (with AA Super Sport), almost 100% when using cheap Walmart Remington and Winchester shells. Buckshot and slugs worked fine on #1 though.

If it's not cycling with AA super sport on the #2 gas setting, you have a mechanical problem with the gun.

Pull out the gas regulator and look in the manifold with a flashlight. Confirm that you have either 3 or 4 gas ports ALIGNED in the 3/8" hole in the bottom of the gas manifold. You will probably find that either the gas ports are drilled off to one side, or the gas manifold is canted to one side, thus obstructing some of the holes. I have also seen some where the holes were drilled too far forward and were not lining up correctly.

Thanks Tony, and thanks again for the great gun, I'm really impressed (I ordered the S05 w/ shark brake recently sent to San Antonio). I took out the regulator and I can see all 4 ports, but the manifold is slightly canted such that if you were to hypothetically section the gas tube and could look top down, the right (starboard) hole is ~30% blocked from your view by the 3/8" hole. Because the way the hole is cut though, it would only be blocked from your view, the port isn't really choked by the manifold and the path of the gas from that port is still free to enter the tube (although it might be impeded?).

When I screw in the regulator all the way, it stops right after passing the 2 setting. My 2 setting is then the first detent I hit turning it back out, then the #1 is the subsequent detent. Does that sound right?

It seemed to me like the bolt was flying back too fast? It seemed like the rim was slipping past the extractor so it wasn't hitting the ejector hard enough to fly out. The "stove pipes" were more of the shell laying parallel to the bore but with shell hanging halfway out.

I plan to reload my shotshells and slugs again in the near future, and I exclusively buy winchester AA cases to shoot at the moment for the round, and for the hull they are loaded in.

Id love to hear a single report of win AA failing in a saiga. I always have used the hottest loads in all my shotguns, including my s12, and that one I leave on setting 1. they are a dollar more a box, but its worth it for birdshot loads....

In another thread Mike D is suspecting I'm having "breaking in problems," but I had a box of Winchester AA light target load, along with cheapo Wal-Hell 100 box, all either FTE or stovepipe. Remington so far has given me zero problems...

(Edit:)

I just took a good look inside the manifold; I'm not *exactly* sure what I was looking at, a 3/8" hole with 3 (that I could see) tiny holes at the 12, 3, (6?) and 9 o'clock positions...

...this is what came out (minus the shell...)

...think it was a little dirty? *sighs* I wonder if it'll perform better now... I love ignorant discoveries.

Yeah, I had the same amount of crud (wad debris?) in mine too.

It smells like burnt plastic, and why not, wads blasting through a hot chromed tube (...did I just write strange robot porn?)... all I know is AK-engineering is built to work, and if I had rounds going through it at all with this kind of crud, I'm even more impressed with my purchase.

Here's my story. I went to buy some more Federal shells today. I shot 6 shot before and had about the same probs. I made it thru a few mags with no malfunctions, but this was'nt the norm. The ammo gods must have been watching, they were pretty much out of all the individual Federal boxes of 12 guage. So on a whim I picked up the value pack, 100 rounds of Federal 7 1/2 shot. I went to my bowling pin spot today and proceeded to shoot pins. Wow, I made it thru 100 rnds with only 2 malfunctions. One was caused by me doing a tactical reload. One in the chamber and a fresh/full 10 rndr under. Caused a big jam, my fault, no more tactical reloads. The other was a failure to eject somewhere around rnd 80.

I've said it before, its kind of like a .22 LR. You have to test out different loads to find what will work. What works in one guys gun won't necessarily work in someone elses. I got lucky and found a load that works. The Winchester super handicap work in mine too, but cost $8 more per hundered in my neck of the woods. Hope this helps. I love this S12, and it is so much more enjoyable to shoot when it runs like it supposed to.

"Wads blasting through hot chrome tubes' ARRGGHHHH

M U S T GO TO REGENERATION POD TO CYBORGBATE...

The Saiga sounds like it's breaking in. Some need more break in than others.

I can only suggest popping off the pressure knob on the gas tube manifold and cleaning things out, and thusly inspiring robot porn. I didn't realize how funny that kind of was until now. I thought I was just pointing out the obvious. Heh. Happy to amuse. :)

Sorry, not the intended result, BVamp. Indeed let's keep the robophiles PG-13.

Tromix Tony was mentioning this 3 or 4 gas ports aligned in the 3/8" hole in the bottom of the gas manifold... etc...

...any way someone (Tony, if you have time?) to post pictures to show comparison shots of how it should look and how it shouldn't? Truth be told as of now, I couldn't tell the difference.

The gasport pix are somewhere around here look at old posts.

Sorry about the roboporn reaction, i have enough metal screws in my leg that the cyborg takes over sometimes!
