southcounty92629 0
I am just about to pickup up my first saiga. It's a 16" 7.62 x 39. I was interested in changing the front hand guard for a standard set of ak hand guards. I am finding that most say "will not fit saiga" What is different on the Saiga's. and if anyone knows where i can get cheap black front hand guards for the saiga (that wont melt to my barrel after a 100rds) please let me know, Any help would be much appreciated. I was looking into something like this, but i read these melt and i dont know if they would fit: http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/...&t=11082005
taurussvt 0
That's the same hand guard set I have on my Saiga. The easiest way to put AK handguards on a saiga is to get the bolt on retainer from Dinzag as well as a modified gas tube. This is the reason why they all say, will not fit saiga rifles. The saiga doesn't use a hand guard retainer, just a screw towards the rear and a tight fit. Also, the saiga gas tube doesn't have retainers built in to it. Instead it's got a shield welded on to it. southcounty92629 0
Do you know where i could get a modified gas tube? Also, have you had any trouble with that hand guard set and heat issues.

One way is cheap and labor intensive, the other seems expensive and it very easy. You can either buy the bolt on retainer from dinzag, or buy an actual AK lower hand guard retainer, press off your front sight block and gas block, grind a notch in the barrel, slide the retainer on, press the gas block back on, and press the front sight block back on. Most people who are confronted with the 2 options decide to just spend the $80.

So to use most of the handguards, you have to add the retainer. I ended up ordering the $80 retainer from Dinzag. http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/49797-64126-1872.html This is the only handguard I've seen that doesn't require a separate retainer. And it works with the stock gas tube. It looks something like this when installed. http://mywebsite.register.com/db4/00329/el...nderfolder1.JPG

I had the Tapco type & it did not stay in place when I was on the range. Sent it back, bought the Dinzag lower retainer & it works greats. I bought a gas tube from another website but I had to "Adjust it to fit" and should have just bought it from Dinzag as well. The adjusting process allowed me to get Saiga Thumb Edited April 18, 2008 by Kevin C
taurussvt 0
Mine never really stayed tight either, and that was with sticking a screw driver through the sling hole to tighten it. After about 60 rounds the thing would always be walking forward.
b2673ad 0
Hello Here is my Saiga Thumb I got my Saiga thumb when I was checking and adjusting the new gas tube. When installing it & attemping to close the locking lever on the side of the receiver, the lever was very tight & when it finally closed allowing my thumb to jamb into the side of the rifle this is what I got. My bathroom looked like a CSI crime scene
BrutalGardener 205
The Tapco Saiga-specific Galil hand-guard wouldn't stay put for me either. So, I decided to use the original HG, after putting some venting holes in it. It keeps the barrel cool and I like the way it looks. BTW, first post here. Thanks for all the useful info, guys. The obligatory pics of my "Black Russian" are attached.

My bathroom looked like a CSI crime scene Wow, that's rather grotesue and uncomfortable to look at. It could've been me last weekend though. I cleaned the gas tube and made the same mistake as you while securing it. Fortunately, I just got a small piece of skin on the side of my thumb caught, without breaking it. There's just small, dark spot of coagulated blood under the skin now. Edited April 18, 2008 by SpetsnazGRU
IndyArms 10,186
I always used pliers on the gas tube locking lever... Never had to hit my fingers on anything... hmmm... Imagine that... If it didnt move easily with pliers I knew my gas tube was not properly seated/installed...
vjor 2
The tube cleaning kit that comes with the rifle has a slot on one side, U use it to move the gas lever on the side of rear side block. And yes those levers can come really tight hard to move.
b2673ad 0
Hello Red Badge of Courage If you are not getting dirty, sore, smelly, bloody, trying to solve a problem on your own or been more than 5 days without a shower /bed you must work in bank or in some other white collar type jobs. I would suspect that most everyone here has been all of the above. Yes my Saiga thumb drives my wife crazy because she had no idea it happened when she was in the next room. I fuc---up but we learn from our mistakes and drive on.

My bathroom looked like a CSI crime scene Kevin C, What I have found easier than anything is a slotted tip (screws onto the end of a cleaning rod for the patch to fit through). Easy to find in one of those $2 cleaning kits that roll up in a little pouch. They are all over the internet, Cheaper than Dirt or CDNN Investments (they have a $10 shipping, but a lot of othe stuff too. http://www.cdnninvestments.com/cleankit5422.html It has to be steel. BRASS WILL BREAK!! The slotted tip just slips onto the small tab at the end of the gas lever, and gives me the added leverage to gently move the gas lever in and out of the indentation. The one on the side of the cleaning kit that comes with the Saiga is hard for me to use; maybe my hands are just big. Pliers wouldn't let me feel the lever move. Just my way of doing it. Your thumb makes me hurt just looking at it. When I used to do all my own auto repairs I used to say " it's not really done until you bleed on it". louielouie Edited April 20, 2008 by louielouie
terrace_mountain 0
I guess I got lucky....my gas tube lever moves pretty freely with a tiny bit of effort.

IndyArms 10,186
not if you are careful and just get the little tab on it... pull out on it as you rotate it around... gotta get it out of the detent its sitting in...
