Bvamp 604
AP ammo is mainly prohibited only in handguns. some states forbid it completely, however, but not the facist state of NY, if you can believe that one. only handgun ammo has a nationwide ban for AP. ForGreatJustice 1
Not to mention that you're unlikely to acquire, hold, and attack a human target across a 500 yard stretch of unbroken terrain. You'd have to be facing a fairly inept enemy as well. Up here in the northern mountains, that's not likely. If you are at sea, or operating in the southwestern American desert amongst well-trained drug dealers, well....maybe you have a point there. Max practical range is around 300 yards. Why so short? The .308 is practical as a sniper round out to 800 yards. 1.5 MOA gives a 6" circle at 400 yards, and a 9" circle at 600yds. Seems to me the max practical range against man-sized or larger creatures is somewhere around 5-600 yds. I was refering to it in a short-barrel (16") assault rifle role. These firearms lack the sights and velocity to make them truly useful at long range. Sure, you could still engage targets beyond 300, but it isn't practical unless you have a rig set up for it. A 22" Saiga, FAL, M14, or G3 definately will let you reach out and hit 600, M700 rigs can hit the longer distances you mentioned. +1 on the M-14 or M1A at 500 M+. The M-14 may not be the "ultimate" sniper rifle but it is effective in combat due to its' power and utility both short and long range. AK's are very reliable, hold 30 rds, and great for CQC but the M-14 with 20 rounds can "go the distance" with killing power. Wolvie
24kshooter 0
COST - 18 cents vs 28 cents - 10 cents isn't much if you are shooting 40-50 ronds per week - alot more if you are shooting 200 rounds per week. POWER - x51 goes through trees MAGS - x39 has hicap mags w/mods available now - cheaper
macbeau 902
7.62x51 = Battle Rifle = heavy weight but longer ranges and good penetration = good for defending a position. 7.62x39 = Assault Rifle = lighter weight and shorter ranges = good for assaulting an objective or a "running battle". ...As for hunting deer-sized animals, apples vs oranges - especially in SE GA...
