Is there a certain copy(s) that covers most topics to be used in survival situations? Obviously the Military guides are a good place to start, but are there a collection of books that one would benefit from reading and owning? I figure its time to put a bug out bag together and need reference material to get more familiar with things. Can anyone elaborate...lets hear it...

Heres a good survival guide on how to survive the zombie apocalypse. ;-)

But I digress. To your actual question, I assume you mean wilderness survival.

There are actually quite a few web based sites on wilderness survival. Here is a couple you may like.

No 1 book will give you the info you need. You should have available books on local plants and trees, (especially on what is edible!). And don't forget a good book of knots and lashings. Quick or primitive shelter is going to require a lot of tying and lashing.

As for a pocket sized reference manual, I don't think you could go wrong by picking up a British SAS survival guide. The only problem is that it'll cover topics on all hemispheres like rain forest, mountain terrain, arctic etc... which might not apply to your needs.

For North American strickly, I would look at the Boy Scout manual as it should be hemisphere specific or at least was when I was in it almost 40 years ago, and full of woodcraft and other necessary skills in the wild.
