notofnow 5
I've heard the bi-pod causes the POI of the s308 to change and make it less accurate. Is that true and what have been your experience?

volkov 318
Also heard if your handgrip is ugly your gun can backfire..
JulianH 4
lol... we're all newbies once guys. Whoever told you that was probably talking about a barrel clamp bipod at the end of the barrel, which would cause barrel flex. A bipod on the handguard, or even better at the very front of the receiver would not cause any change in POI, but make sure you get a quality bipod.
volkov 318
yeah I guess.. I just was like what the hell? I mean logically it isn't any different than anything else you rest your barrel on as far as it's effect on the gun.. it's just more built in.
finlander 3
Well, the front handguard is attached to the barrel, so yes, using a bipod attached to the front handguard can change the POI vertically. Free float handguard cures that problem.

Free float handguard cures that problem. And you do this how on the AK platform? Also, no gas operated semi-auto rifle has a truly free floated barrel, in free floating the barrel is attached to the receiver at one point only, and no handgaurds or stocks contact it anywhere. Of course you still have the gas block attached to it, so you'll never have a truly free floated barrel, but a handguard? yeah you could do that.

Yes, it's true that no gas operated rifle can have a truly free float barrel. Well, I'll try to explain how I made the "free-float" handguard. There's that slot under the barrel in the receiver where the handguard goes, well, I just made a tight-fit flat metal bar that goes in there and attached it to the receiver with two screws. I then attached a 2" diameter metal tube on that bar. That's it. Simple and crude but works.

Free float handguard cures that problem. Welllll... technically, yes. But it would not be changed vs holding the handguard with your hand. As far as a free floated handguard, check out Tritium's rifle. It's truly awesome work.

What if you airgapped the gas tube and made sure the head of the gas piston doesn't make any contact while it's inside the gas block? IMHO it's all diminishing returns on a Kalashnikov pattern rifle. The bolt / forward trunnion / barrel interface will still be an issue.
