BrutalGardener 205
man, that was intense. Yeah... and this is a "PG" rated collection. The First Chechen War was a brutal, horrific cluster fuck of incredible proportions. The malnourished, under-equipped, under-staffed, demoralized Russian units were engaging in some of the most intense, brutal urban fighting since Stalingrad, dealing with incredibly poor organization and leadership from the top. This was right after the break-up of the USSR, when the country was going through an economic depression which made the American "Great Depression" look mild in comparison. A lot of the best officers had quit, because they were not getting paid or provided with proper housing. Many units were at 40% capacity, due to the post-Soviet re-organization and troop loss due to desertion, poor health and drug use. The core of the Chechen rebels which they faced was lead by battle-hardened former Soviet officers, which had fought in Afghanistan and various smaller conflicts in Abkhazia, Transdnistria, Nagorni Karabakh, etc. Most of their troops served in the Soviet Army. They had access to huge stockpiles of Soviet arms, which Drunkie Yeltsin had just left for them when the Russian Army first withdrew in 91. Between then and 94, they also purchased a shit-load of modern Western equipment, including American BDUs, vests, satellite phones, sleeping bags, etc. Basically, a lot of those guys were better trained, equipped and armed than most Russian troops. The only advantage that the Russians had was their mostly outdated air force and artillery. Tanks proved to be more of liability in the streets of Grozny, where they found themselves systematically trapped, swarmed and destroyed by well-organized RPG teams, positioned on top of high-rises. Many of those tanks suffered more than a dozen hits before they were taken out. Both sides went medieval in their conduct. There are accounts of Russians executing Chechen snipers by having them torn in half by two tanks, women snipers gang-raped and blown up with grenades, looting, etc. Russians POWs were fairly routinely mutilated and decapitated. Chechens liked holding Russian conscripts for ransom, contacting their relatives and sending them body parts until they paid up. In one case, a Chechen commander personally decapitated several Russian POWs with a knife then tried to sell their bodies to their parents. Those animals loved to video tape stuff like that too. By the way, there was an Islamic Jihad element to that war, but much less so than in The Second Chechen War. It was more about nationalism. Jesus thats brutal... i guess i don't know much at all about this conflict. I was in Middle School when this was going down, so I just vaguely remember bits and pieces. Sounds like it sucked for both sides.
BrutalGardener 205
I noticed they called BMPs and BRDMS "Tanks", there PCs (personal carriers). There was a few T72s with reactive armor and a destroyed T54. The BMP 1 did not have its Sagger missle they must have used it. Ive seen the media call a MK19 a fully auto mortar tube. I know maybe Im off topic, but I hate it when media doesn't publish stuff with accuracy. Makes me wonder what else they screwed up. EnglishRussia is not really "media". It's just some dude's blog. His English is not very good and he is never that concerned about accuracy in the first place.
