My dad had bird dogs, we never used any hearing protection for them when hunting. Then again, your only taking a couple shots when your hunting. Ripping through a 30 rounder while standing next to your pup might not be the best idea though.

I think alot depends on the dog. Some it bothers so much they whine and climb under the tool box just watching fireworks a 1/2 mi. away. Others hear gun fire and look down range tosee what you were shooting at and if they should be attacking it, lol. I've had both. The Mutt Muffs might have been a big help with the first one.

Dogs have very sensitive hearing and gunshots will damage their hearing. My friend shot with his dog near him against my advice and the dog was not the same afterward. He screamed in pain when the gun went off.
