storm6490 2,768
elcan made a camera scope for years now. they also make the spooky stuff you never see. it's Leica Leitz US Canada Raytheon madness. This is more of a consumer scope with a cool recorder. They make rangefinding, dope adjusting scopes that are being tested. They also have several scopes that are NV IR and issued to troops around the world.
sccritterkiller 473
So basically any chump can go buy a new rifle, box of ammo slap a smart scope on it and go shoot a trophy animal at 350 yards? No thanks. There's no pride in that IMO, it'd be cool don't get me wrong, just not for hunting. Same was said, I'm sure, about any significant innovation in shooting from breech loading cartridges and repeating rifles to the first affordable telescopic sights. Hate to say it, but right now any chump can go buy a boresighted .270 Remington 770 or .30-06 Savage Axis, box of ammo and make a kill shot on a trophy animal at 100 yards where most shots happen. The shooting side of hunting has always been incidental, anyway. You bond with nature and the animal, not your rifle and gear. +1...To the best part about hunting is knowing your game enough to put yourself in position to get the shot. Nothing like being in the woods at daybreak. That and the fellowship of hunting camp. Taking game has always been secondary to me. That's probably why I like bow hunting so much. cvhanh20 1,052
Yeah cause that will hold up under rough handling! Not to mention it's so ergonomic. lol
Eric Pate 478
A "smart scope" just does all the work you just pull the trigger and as long as you don't jerk you'll most likely kill whatever at any given range. From a non-recreational perspective, I don't possibly see how this could be considered a bad thing.
jdub23 21
We will be seeing these type setups in one way or another in the future "yes with the iphone or smartphone." Digital, handheld Camcorders are $35 in Wally World and I won't buy one. Why, because my iphone is better and I can do alot more with it in the way of photography, video recording and editing. It also has more memory. The cheap camera is now obsolete. The same will happen with these neato camera scopes etc. with setups like the iphone HUD mouts. One day the smartphone will be able to take abuse much the same way your mouse pad can. Maybe the same feel too. Its clear the affordable software has surpassed affordable hardware and interface materials. Edit: That last line is probably an oxymoron "or whatever..." An affordable and sturdy "proven" HUD that can be utilized in as many ways as the smartphone mount, just isn't a near future possibility for people like me. Hell I still want a 2nd to 3rd Gen NV has been out of my willing to pay range for 20 years, hasn't bugged. Thermal attachment to the iphone would be nice, a good affordable one Edited May 25, 2013 by jdub23
Big John! 2,062
Me thinks some are reading too much into the iphone gadget. May be good. May be a complete POS. I didn't post it as if it were the end all. I merely thought (and still do) that it would be something fun to play with depending on what the app is capable of. Geez boys, it's an iphone gadget. Don't be so serious
coronet 131
I'd rather have on of the N Korean DMZ robots that patrol my property and shoot any one that crosses it. Is there an app for that yet? lol.

You overly serious folks can sit behind your crosshairs with all the old folks. I'll be looking at my nipple reticles, enjoying pulling the trigger with one hand, and the other hand will be free to ummm.... Nevermind
