  1. I have a 19in. threaded barrel model S-12...Im pretty sure that the 22in. uses exactly the same porting and parts as the 19in. so cycling should be no problem in a shortened 22in barrel...you will probably be best off having the barrel threaded for chokes after you trim the length to where you want it , so you can shoot whatever ammo you like thru it...and the choked section of the barrel is in the last inch of barrel length , so it will be removed when you shorten the barrel..
  2. if you are a hunter looking for a hunting gun , and you mostly hunt ducks , geese or other small game at longer ranges , you may want to go with the MP-153..people on the S-12 forum have said that the long range pattern on an S-12 with a 22in. barrel and full choke is surprisingly good ( i have a 19in. threaded barrel that seems to work pretty well )..but the MP-153 has the longer range advantage by being chambered to accept 3 1/2in. shells and has a longer barrel (26in.)...the automatic bolt catch is a bonus too , too bad we dont have one on our Saigas , YET! ( i have seen a new Saiga model c
  3. kinda off subject , but....anyone know where i can get a scope mount like the one in that first picture?..i like the height and forward sweeping design..if that is a weaver rail , and is a good quality part , its just what im looking for...i havent seen one like that on any of the online AK parts sites...i was going to get K-Var's KV-04 mount , but i like the one in the picture better...anyone know who sells em?, or who makes em?...the stock is pretty nice too , but im not real big on the wood idea..looks very comfortable , but looks mighty heavy too...
  4. yes it is..if you check out Makc's website , under 'e-store' you will find the parts to do the conversion and an illustrated step-by-step on the installation procedure..the position of the hold open on the reciever does not interfere with a pistol grip , and in fact seems to be better positioned FOR a pistol grip...it would end up just above and behind the trigger on the right side bottom of the reciever(looking down the sights)...you can see a picture of one if you look thru some of the saiga rifles threads....
  5. do the US made gas pistons fit the S-12? or does anyone have ones that do?..just curious..i kinda like the cleaning groove , larger dia. rod , and concave domed piston design of the US made pistons...and it certainly wouldnt hurt to know if these would fit if i was to have a problem with my original one...being of a mechanical background , maybe i just like taking things apart and jazzing em up.. ( used to build street rods back in the 70's & 80's ..lol.. , had a 10.00sec.ET street '75 GTO 455 once ..but only once ..lol.. )..this would probably qualify as one of those , "chrome valve cov
  6. EAA is now selling 'improved cylinder' chokes as well...unfortunately they dont have a set including them yet , so it would have to be bought separately if you had planned to buy their full set...still cheapest to just buy the imp/mod/full chokes individually and forget the thread protector since the threaded barrel model comes with a 0.0 cyl. choke (at least , mine did )..you save almost $10.00 that way... i really am not the guy to be recomending what chokes to use for skeet because i have never done it before..lol...so thank you Makc , i learned something valuable from that ( now i wont h
  7. chokes are kinda like a funnel at the end of your barrel...a full choke is the tightest funnel of your choices , it will give you the tightest pattern and effectively the best distance , and so is a good choice for trap , but you dont want to shoot slugs through them because they can split the end of your barrel (generally speaking...you could probably get away with it for a while but it is not a good idea )....a cylinder choke is basically no funnel at all , and gives you the best spread at shorter ranges , but loses accuracy as ranges increase faster , a good choice for skeet , obviously no
  8. Tokarev.... dont feel too bad about the price you paid for your gun...where i live , the local hardware store sells the S-12 'over the counter' for $440.00 and you can get the .410 for about the price i 'special ordered' my S-12 for.....had i not found this site i would have paid that price in a 'New York minute' , like some of my friends who have more money than brains....just wait till you have someone with a $2k gun ask you what you paid for that monster and you will forget all about the $75 you might have saved....the truly bright side is , now that you are familiar with this website , you
  9. just FYI...anyone interested in reading a detailed test of the Saiga..check out pg5 of this forum , title "Saiga 12 article II"...but be aware that the gas chamber setting is actually mis-stated , setting #1 is for 3in. magnums , #2 for 2 3/4in. rounds...also , the bolt catches are now factory standard on some models (check with your dealer to be sure you are getting one )...
  10. hey Makc!!.. we must have been writing our replies at the same time...had i read yours first i wouldnt have spent so much time flaming the same things you did...lol....ahh well..great minds think alike eh?...
  11. this review has been posted here before...fortunately its the ONLY bad review i have seen about a Saiga in the last couple years....a couple things you might want to look at..in the pic. of the gun , the recoil spring rod , which holds the 'errant' cover on , is clearly not assembled correctly....and the article states that instead of even attempting to find a cause for the fault they experienced , they simply 'dropped the guns testing and slapped a label on it'(not in those exact words , but you get the idea..)....sounds like a biased report , to me at least , especially considering the fact
  12. ive never seen a removable combo. part like that made for a shotgun... but a gunsmith/barrel manufacturer could 'probably' machine a muzzle break into your existing barrel whether or not its choked or threaded , i have seen that done , just not on an imported gun...no idea about the legality or cost...
  13. from what i have read from the several pages of threads on this forum , it would be easier to answer the question "what can you NOT feed a Saiga-12"..basically , anything up to 3in. 12ga. rounds works ...low power rounds may cause ejection problems , as you would naturally expect from a semi-auto gun , magnums are no problem , just make sure you have the gas chamber adjusted appropriately...ive even read that you can fire slugs thru a full choke without harming it...specialty rounds will pretty much have the effects they will on any gun , ie: if you fire flamethrower rounds thru your gun , mak
  14. hey guys!...do you use any kind of preservative on yours?...i used a little CLP to lube the gas plug and threads and some of the outer surfaces but im concerned about the internal stuff..im wondering if anyone knows if its safe to use something like CLP to lube the internal parts of like , the batt. compartment threads , etc....i know it would mess up the optical lens so of course that area is out of the question , but i cant find anything on my CLP bottle that says whether or not it can be used on the batt. contacts and springs..im just a little concerned about the semi-unprotected surfaces o
  15. oh cool!...thanks guys!...Max , im gonna be keeping my eyes open for when you get those threaded brakes and see thru front post sights in...just got my recoil buffers from blackjack too..
  16. Hey Makc!.. Just got the laser today!..thanks alot man!...this thing is great!... it took me a little while to figure out how to adjust it ( about 5 mins.) because i dont read or speak russian , and the instructions are in russian , but i could see from the diagrams how to use the tools included in the little tool-box that it comes in.. and after figuring out how easy it is , if you set the gun in a rest , it took all of 15 secs to have it set..i have a question though..what is the little rod(looks like a solid rollpin approx. 1/8in.x1 1/2in.) that comes with it for?..
  17. wow!!...now thats a fast finger!!...nice 8 round mag too!!...ill take ten of each please!..lol..
  18. now that is a truly beautiful piece of machinery...any idea what the price tag on one of these might be?
  19. I,m kinda hoping that a year from now , we will be able to buy these mags freely..
  20. lucky for me...local hardware store , gun counter..$28..
  21. well guys as long as we are engaged in a hypothetical disscusion about what may or may not happen and why , I'll drop my $.10 worth into the pot.. the couple of things we are sure of here is that the AWB is going to expire relatively soon and the import ban is not... IMHO the question of whether or not there will be an additional AWB in the future is dependant on alot of factors and legislation that will be wholly different in perspective than the "slick willy bill" was..we may get another one , but it wont be over-night and it may not include all the same details..(this could be good or b
  22. UH oh !!!... Well..I guess I have another lil problem....I took the girlfriend out shooting with us yesterday for the sake of "harmony in the home" ..( I hear they do it all the time in California )...and everything went great..she's a good shot , she doesnt mind the recoil from the Saiga , I taught her how to strip and clean it , what parts to lubricate etc. (she says we only need to use the recoil buffer for one week a month!), and we all had a great time ...the problem now is that I cant keep the two of em apart ...they are always hangin out together , they go to the bathroom togethe
  23. aaahhhh!!! perfect!!...thanks makc , that works great!..
  24. yea!.. ... I dont think its gonna work out though...her neck wont quite fit in the little slot and now she smells like gun oil.. ..plus i need my keys to get a cup of coffee in the morning ...
  25. hey jackhammer I can see from your pic that you have the K-Var , KV-04 mount..is that the KV-04"S" or the standard KV-04? ..on the K-Var website the mount they have pictured as the "S" model is labeled the same as yours (without the "S")and I'd hate to order the wrong one ..good looking gun by the way ...
