  1. Saigaczech: I shoot a lot in BPCR so I cast a LOT of bullets...The best source of lead for MY needs has been (a "secret" here) finding a scrap yard that has received the lead that was once used to line the walls of hospital Xray rooms. It is pure lead and came in flat sheets about 1/8 inch thick...I can add tin as needed to harden it. For smokeless loads wheel weights are MUCH harder. (They contain antimony, tin, zinc etc)..For smokeless loads harder isnt a bad thing. Reducing the velocity slightly will reduce leading and usually give better accuracy in modern loads. Also use a GOOD bullet l
  2. RoughRider:..First, welcome to the world of Saigas, and especially hunting! I doubt that I am the worlds greatest authority on hunting..but I have shot a few deer in my day. What constitutes a "good' hunting rifle/round depends on several things....the game being hunted..The geography where you will do your hunting...Your eyesight and experience. A hunting rifle is like a fine carpenters tool..In the hands of an experienced carpenter who knows both his limitations and those of his tools, it can create heirloom quality pieces..In MY hands those same tools create something..uhh.. far diffe
  3. Evening and a Happy New Year to All..I cut the shroud off my barrel tonight..Now I am not sure which muzzle device to order from Dinzag..The barrel measures .592 immediately in front of the sight base..On Dinzags sight there are American made brakes..and some original German brakes (74 type) for 24X1.5 thread. (If I understand the info correctly). There is an upside down stamp on the sight base "24-1"..Does anyone know if that number has any meaning to us?
  4. Im old..I am tired...and so so discouraged. There is no way anything good is going to come to gun owners from Osamastan..err..DC. Is this why many of us "served" our country in the military?..To see it destroyed from within? What bothers me most is the fact i keep seeing threads that talk about gun prices if an all out ban goes into effect...or God forbid outright confiscation... Are we so smug..so "comfortable" ...in front of our wide screen tv and endless "reality" shows that we are too "busy" to get pissed?..What kind of message could we send if one MILLION gun owners showed up in Osa
  5. This guy thinks he is the only person around who actually looks online...The one he wanted 1000 for looked like the one on the left hand side in your photo..I wanted a 12 badly..but I am NOT gonna pay 600 for the privilege of buying a 400 dollar gun. (I can buy a M500 for each room in the house for that price)
  6. Hey all..I bought my Saiga rifle first. (.223) Tried to order a 12 and the local dealer I like to deal with couldnt find one. I just left another dealer from down the street..He finally got on the Saiga bandwagon..and what an expensive wagon! The cheapest Saiga he had was a .223..$529.... With the bolt on (non-converted) AR type stock..and regular handguard?..700. Saiga 12 guage?..Sure..non converted $929..bolt on Tapco stock..$1029...These are the times that try mens souls.
  7. I Like the looks of that..and had recently seen a 65 kit for sale with no barrel and of course a cut receiver...If a person bought one of the kits..What barrels would work..and how difficult would the install be?
  8. Had a 912 Franchi Variomax..Traded it in on something last year..cause my 15 or 20 year old Mossberg 500 has been used to kill turkeys, geese, ducks, been used as a canoe paddle, and once as a crutch..And has never let me down. (And the Franchi kicked harder than Chuck Norris)
  9. Damn!..Can we say "Hitler Youth" boys and girls?
  10. Hi Hunter... Some of these solutions probably wont appeal to you because of the expense..But if you think you might do a lot of casting down the road they might help. I cast thousands of BIG lead bullets per year..in the 330 to 530 grain range...And the secret to getting good bullets..or balls... the size you want is temperature control. The lead must be HOT..The ladle or dipper must be HOT..and the mould must be HOT. Lymans literature will tell you to cast in the 650 degree range..I can tell you its an exercise in futility. If your lead has a "slushy" look on top..It is NOT hot enou
  11. Hey All Ive been a member for a while..This is my first post. For the last ten years most of my shooting has been BPCR..And my cases are rarely if ever resized or trimmed. For various reasons Ive started reloading my smokeless stuff again, I recently bought a Wilson case trimmer and case holders. Im having trouble with consistent results. Has anyone else used this trimmer and if so could you tell me the correct way to set it up...I tried measuring from the face of the threaded shank to the face of the cutter head holder. That got me close but I would suddenly get a case that was .10 undersi
  12. I saw photos somewhere..Of someone who used a wheel puller to pull the sight base...(Course..how you get it back ON I dont know.
