  1. I followed the directions on a websites step-by-step guide to conversions. I got the trigger guard off no problem, and the plate below it too. I cleaned the receiver, and am waiting on the new trigger components and pistol grip. It was easy. I used a carbide cutter in a die grinder to grind the heads off the rivets, and it all went smoothly. Mon or Tue I'll finish, when the parts get here.
  2. Just got back from the range. Gun shop called, the 5.45 came in, so I drove down and shot it with some ammo I picked up at Academy. Headshots no problem at 50 yards. The manual says 100m group is 133mm. The conversion parts are on their way, so next week should be busy. The receiver is plum on the inside! Outside is darker, but there's still a hint of it in the right light. Dimpled receiver. Date of 4-23-09.
  3. Emails indicate that all my stuff was shipped, and is on the way. It should all be delivered by Tuesday. I'm still looking for US 5.45 mag floorplates. The anticipation is KILLING me! I feel like a kid the week before Christmas.
  4. I hate Sandler too. Not funny. Carrey isn't funny either. "Bachelor Party" with Tom Hanks and Adrian Zmed gets my vote for worst ever. "Dukes of Hazzard" sucked, but then, I hate Jessica Simpson so I'm biased.
  5. My wife is very indulgent of my hobbies. I just don't want to push my luck... I have to get registered with AIM Surplus. They were $20.00 cheaper on a single spam can of 5.45 than SG, but you have to submit an ID photo, and the bank card is in my wife's name. I am going tomorrow to start an account at the Mobil credit union around the corner; then I'll have a Visa in my name, and can submit an ID to AIM, and buy ammo from them, as they seem to have the best price on 5.45 right now. The Walmart moneycard I've been using, to keep internet purchases separate from our bank account, has be
  6. I'd consider replacing your mag floorplates with U.S. ones instead of doing the gas piston. By the way - only ONE 30 round mag? Floorplates- thanks. Do you have a source for them? Yeah, one for now. I don't keep a ton of magazines on hand for my guns anyway- 1 or 2 per rifle is enough for me. The mag I ordered was this one: http://store.carolinashooterssupply.com/servlet/-strse-359/AK74-Bulgarian-5.45x39-Magazine/Detail as recommended in this thread: http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?showtopic=49614
  7. I ordered my 5.45 yesterday. I already have a 20" Saiga .223 that is all stock except for a UTG mount and Tasco 3-9x32 scope. The .223 wil remain stock; all I did to the trigger was remove the pieces and polish the places where they touch, to smooth the feel. The 5.45, however, is getting semi-converted; FCG, PG, and wire folding stock. I'll replace the piston, too, with a US-made version, to keep compliant. And I have a 30-rd mag coming; if necessary, I'll install a bullet guide too. I haven't done a conversion yet, but have been gathering the tools. I have most of it, a Dremel, several
  8. n/m I saw this on the side of the page- didnt know it was comp
  9. Well I just got back from the gun shop. I ordered a 5.45 Saiga, and it'll be here Fri or Sat. ($371.00 after tax). I plan to semi convert it, so I'm off to look at pistol grips and FCG now. I think I'm going to go with a wire side-folder also, although I'll evaluate how it feels after moving the FCG and adding the PG. thanks guys!!!
  10. I'm searching the FS forums now....thanks.
  11. You'll be fine. It's no shorter than 26". The barrel is no shorter than 16". ETA: Don't cut the tang flush with the receiver, or you'll be under 26" overall. Thank you Nalioth. -- I'm looking at this folding stock: http://dpharms.com/akromaniansidefolderwscrw-p-400.html I don't want to buy a cheap Tapco stock- I keep reading that they break easily. Thanks again for the replies, and help, guys.
  12. Thanks for the link and info. I'm in Texas.
  13. Is a stock necessary for legality? I'm thinking of just using the pistol grip with no buttstock, but I don't know if it's legal. Thanks for any help.
  14. Soon I'll be able to pick up another rifle to go with my .223 Saiga. My budget will allow either one fully converted Saiga or 2 stock ones. It would be nice to have a Saiga with wood furniture and trigger, but I'd have to choose between x39 and 5.45. I already have a small-cal Saiga, but 5.45 ammo is SO cheap, it's wrong not to have one. If I settle for stock Saigas, I can get both (although, to be honest, they'd both get new FCG and pistol grips in the future, but not wood furniture). If I get the x39, I'm missing out on the cheap 5.45 ammo. If I get the 5.45, I'm missing out on the heav
  15. I am ddrrooollinng over the 20" barreled x39. I would go right nice with the 20" .223 Saiga I have now. I just don't have the funds-yet. The first week of May I'll have it. And, it's a good-looking conversion, with the wood furniture and all. :thumbs up:
  16. Barring the above, boiled crawfish and ice-cold Guinness Draught.
  17. Nitroglycerin, gunpowder, detcord, and ball bearings. If I'm being put down, I ain't goin' alone.
  18. Do they feed ok? Any jams or problems? I have a .223 and am thinking of getting Galil mags after reading this thread.... They fed well in my tests last week, no hiccups. However, while hand-cycling at home, I noticed that if I deliberately push the magazine all the way to one side - they have some side-to-side play - I can sometimes induce a feeding malfunction. Just a little less play and I think this malfunction could not happen in my gun. I intend to add a little bit of material (with JB Weld) on the top sides of the mags to stabilize them. I will report back in a new thread after do

  20. My stock Saiga .223. 20 inch barrel, polished FCG, otherwise stock. Plans are to semi-convert with a new FCG and PG. It shoots flawlessly, accurate, with absolute reliability with the loads I've used so far (Remington 55gr, Wolf, and BB 62 gr.)
  21. How much shipped for a buttstock? I'd like one to experiment with....zip is 77706 (se tx)
