  1. sorry but i feel scopes are a waste of time on ak's. ar's are better for optics. i usually will out shoot scoped rifles with my tech-sights which i have on all my saiga's. that real world shooting, not off a bench. less weight whereever i can save some helps, add in the fact that it is useless weight for me, i see no reason to keep it. the rear trunion is cast i believe which rules out just tig welding it to the receiver i guess.
  2. I'm converting a 5.45 saiga and building it light. i would like to remove the scope rail which would be easy but what to do with the rear trunion? one of those rivets is kinda important. bolt & nut? can i tig it? it's not like it will have to come out. any ideas? thx
  3. all of my conversions (5 so far) have been done with duracoat. i scrub the gun with prep solv and a scothbrite pad. some of the factory black will come and that;s fine. use foam ear plugs in the barrel and chamber and spray away.
  4. really??? they are selling saiga's as fast as they can get them and you're surprised she didn't seem to want to research your question?
  5. lol i was thinking the same thing. it;s not like the 5.45 is a heavy recoil round. the 74 fsb with brake works great, you get zero rise.
  6. yeah, no way will i place an order without knowing what the total is.
  7. drill and tap it and be done with it. it's a 5 minute job and $5
  8. why change the gb? press off the saiga, put on retainer and press the gb right back on. wb weld the dimple holes and done. i biught the harbor freight 12 tom myself just for the gb's aand fsb's. i've 6 so far. i have no idea if the pin hole lines up but i doubt that it would be perfect but close anyway.
  9. one of mine needed the bg. the other one didn't. it was always the last round in the mag that owuld hang up. for $20...money well spent since it is now 100% gtg
  10. super easy with a shop press. and even easier putting it back on after the retainer. i took a beat up retainer, drilled out the pin from the side, put handguard on the the retainer without the pin. use as guide to drill through for retainer. remove and replace gas block, easy since the pin hole is your easy way to make sure it's gtg.
  11. the ones that came with the guide. i bought both from brian at dinzagarms.com I'm on my third conversion now and waiting for another order from him. he says 2 weeks to ship but it has been much fater than that.
  12. um...i've done two conversions and used the corless drill to tap the BG. I use the lowest setting on the clutch and notch it up a couple setting. works like a charm. i still use cutting oil as well. once the clutch kicks in i reverse a coiple of turns and then oil and go forward. it only turns maybe a 1/4 turn, locks up with the clutch, reverse and start again.
  13. well it looks like it will work fine. not as tight a fit as the stock fsb but tight enough to hold while i drill the top holes. i will have to fill the rear dimples on the barrel but i plan on duracaoting like i did my last one so no biggie.
  14. I bought a long barrel 308 and having buyers remorse. I more than likely won't be converting it any time soon soo. anyone interested pm me. I'll sell it for what it cost me plus shipping. I bought it used but it is in almost like new condition.
  15. i just used the 2pc clamp on type. expensive but easy. I may pick up a cheap $299 5.45 and play more. press off the gas tube and put a cheap surplus retainer. cut the barrel shorter, recrown and tack weld the fh to the fsb, tacking that to the barrel, making an overal 16 1/4" barrel. should be a cheaper build, but may not be 922 comp.
  16. i'll let ya know in about a week. i have a 47 fsb coming for my 2nd saiga conversion...trying to save some money. from what i can tell the saiga barrel is .571 dia and the 47 is listed at soemthing like .576-7-8- so we'll see how it plays out.
  17. my father in law is a dentist so i have a hook/tool for every purpose. i just put all together then use a hook type pick and picked it up and placed it in place.
  18. why did it take you all weekend to spray? it a urethane product and loves to be sprayed wet on wet. actually less issues if done that way. you should be able to put it back together the next day carefully. looks great and should last a good long time.
  19. well i already ripped apart the 7.62x39 saiga i have and now trying to figure out parts/style i want.
  20. i know the bulgarian 24mm threads fits a standard saiga just fine, as to why i presume the bulgarian without threads would be the same. K-Var posts the sizes. the ,591 is the size where the gas block is, the saiga's seem to be stepped down to .571. i'm playing around in my head to cut and recrown the muzzle and tig a fh on, keeping the 16" oa. i'll prob end up just spending the extra bucks and bee down with it.
  21. the one you are talking about is something like .591 inside and the barrel on the saiga is .571
