  1. OP: Love the rocked-out anthem! L5K: I remember the first time I saw that vid, just 'bout pissed myself when the boomstick went off. Not sure what I think about that poster, though.
  2. SAIGA-Genesis: Thanks much! I will say it was an awful lot BETTER before I dragged it with me on two deployments: it lacks the clarity and contrast it first had, probably sand everywhere in the lens (Panasonic DMC-FX35). I know the focus of this forum is largely bulk purchases, but is there anywhere I can buy small quantities of the milsurp stuff? I would love to test the stuff, see if my rifle likes one over the other.
  3. I've put about 300 rounds through my (stock) Saiga 7.62, but only just two days ago actually tried anything OTHER than Tula from Cabelas. I Figured a nice, informal comparison was in order. Testing methodology was, admittedly, not ideal: Shooting from a bench, although unsupported (Elbow rest), 1 10 rd magazine, allow barrel to cool, another 10 rd magazine. After that, I'd switch targets and ammo. All from 50 meters, indoors. Tested were: 1: Tula from Cabela's ($3.79 a box) 2: Remington UMC from Walmart ($13 a box ) 3: Wolf HP from AIM ($4.50 a box) The results (below) show only
  4. [EDIT]: No longer looking, made a great trade and am good to go! I'm looking for wooden lower and upper handguards for my 7.62 restoration. Any condition, so long as they are structurally sound! [EDIT]: No longer looking, made a great trade and am good to go! Mods, you may delete thread if you so desire. Thanks much!
  5. If I understand fully: this would necessitate the removal of the FSB as well? Or do you simply plan on adding an AR style iron for the REAR sight? Either way, I'm intrigued!
  6. Outstanding finish on those rifles, Sean! I especially appreciate how uniform it appears, your close up shot of that side optic mount really highlights the workmanship. One thing that really jumps out at me, though, is: What IS that front sight you have attached to your gas block? Does it still allow removal of the gas tube?
  7. Hmmm, I might have to give Krylon a shot: I used Rust-Oleum Camouflage on an old steel mag I revived, came out ok, but I ended up not liking the tiger stripe I laid out. I think next time I'll go with a more conventional pattern like yours (And mask off the mag where it makes contact with the receiver!)
  8. For sale are: 1: Two UTG double cell, velcro backed mag pouches in coyote brown (Unused - Like New). These have the drain holes, elastic bands along the middle of the cells, and have plentiful velcro patches. $6 for one, $11 for both, $5 flat rate shipping to the first 48. 2: Two UTG Shell (rifle round) Holders in coyote brown, with black elastic loops and velcro backing (Unused - Like New). $3 for one, $5 for both, $3 flat rate shipping to the first 48. Both pouches AND both holders are $20 shipped! Discreet PayPal preferred, but I will accept a USPS Money Order. Thanks fo
  9. An additional tip that might help forum members ID this problem: Take the dust cover off (but leave the spring assy. in place,) and try chambering a snap-cap or dummy round (no live rounds, please!) That way, you should be able to visually see what's going on, and photograph it. Hope that helps!
  10. I'm more than a little jealous: I'm a few hours south of you, and I've been hunting those same Bulgy '74's! (And what a price!) Congrats on the two awesome finds, though. PLEASE post pics of that blue WASR when you're through!
  11. Very nice for a first go! What paint did you use? Also, I understand not doing the optic/optic mount, but any reason you spared the mag?
  12. bigsal: Thanks much, I sent another PM with a couple of questions re: clarification. Fluid Power: My sincerest apologies: had I used the search feature FIRST, I would have found your excellent thread on this EXACT rifle. Apologies! (For future reference, the thread is Here) I took a chance today, drove away from the city to a shop that rumors claimed had a "Metric-***-Ton of AK's", and sure enough, they had one! The price was ridiculous (started with a 5...) but it gave me a great chance to inspect it visually. As previously mentioned, the furniture is entirely usable but does leave so
  13. In my three years dealing with the AR system, every single time I've gone to qualify I've been handed an "Armory Fresh" weapon that goes "BANG!" when I move the trigger forward after a shot on semi (instead of "Klunk!" when the sear resets). This was deeply disturbing the first time, and it's now become a festering wound. Call it local incompetence on my armorer's part, but I've developed a deep distrust and dislike as a result. I used to be all for the HK 416, but that really only solves the direct-impingement problem, and leaves me worried about bad lowers, sand-fouled receivers and all of t
  14. Thanks all for the responses! Fluid Power: Not to be a prick, but I honestly can't tell if you're being serious. (I hope you are, though!) bigsal: I assume you are talking about sale or perhaps local retail prices? I'm in a large city, and all the shops near me are nowhere even CLOSE on price, not even for a WASR. I've looked through all the sponsor's sites, and didn't find anything comparable. If you have a site or recommendation, could you please PM me? I would really appreciate! The videos I found seemed to be mostly people who were upset about 1) Surplus Parts (Bolt carrier and
  15. This statement has greatly piqued my interest: exactly what do you mean?
  16. Hello all! I ran across a thread the other day where bigsal pointed out that centerfire was running a special: Bulgarian -74's, with new nodak receivers and US barrels, for &370 shipped. I am not afraid of the new caliber (I've found GREAT deals on surplus!) but it has me wondering: What's the weakest link here? What should I be seeing? It comes with three mags, -74 style break and bayo lug, cleaning rod (Held under barrel) and a siderail for optics. The only thing I can see that MIGHT be cause for concern is the furniture: I wanted synthetic anyway, but perhaps this stuff is
  17. Thanks PA, that settles it: saving up for the '21, keeping the sporter stock as parts/Not-Quite-So-Evil-Looking rifle.
  18. Thanks both for the replies: right now, I think it's wait until they drop below $550 to my door, then I'll pull the trigger. Just curious, Can you swap bolts/firing pins/bolt carriers/gas rods between Saiga Sporters like mine and SGL21s? That would be all the reason in the world to keep the sporter!
  19. I'll chime in for 54R, would be nice to have parity with the 91/30!
  20. Hello all, I've been lurking for a while but decided to join up and join in. Here's the gist of what I'm working with: I purchased a stock Saiga 7.62x39 (Retail $410 ) before I fully realized the structural differences between it an a proper AK. While I have no problem getting my sleeves rolled up, and wouldn't normally be adverse to the idea of converting restoring it, here are my issues: - I live in an apartment, and don't really have proper space or ventialation to set up a workbench. Not to mention the additional cost to do so. - I am currently lacking some of the tools needed (
