Only the Yugo mags lock the bolt open when empty. I wasn't really as into the bolt-hold open feature as I thought I'd be ....I actually wound up digging the hinged dust-cover better after I scored mine; totally the opposite of what I expected.

Total bummer so far on this mod... I've only removed the bayonet from the rifle itself. After the market went nuts I decided not to do anything irreversible...the grenade spigot is an immovable object despite propane torches, vats of penetrating oil, bench vises, and pipe wrenches..... As far as installing the kit: I had to remove quite bit of material from the lower receiver piece behind the FCG to allow the "tang" (behind the trigger guard) to rest level. Excellent resource thread; Thanks!. Just ordered my Shernic kit yesterday after thinking to check back with them on production updates after about 18 months, LOL. Good on them! Will be using the same Yugo style SKS.... ....ordered the gun orignally as a "very good to whatever" CRC, but it came as the most beat-up thing I've ever seen.... functions flawlessly, but needs to be exorcized!!! Hope this Bullpup mod will do the trick.

The search function doesn't lend itself well to this, so I apologize in advance if someone else started an identical thread yesterday. Do you consider your Saiga 12 an "AK Variant"? When I'm counting my AK's, does the 12 go in there too? I would tend to say yes because the overall mechanism is so similar, even though I know a shotty isn't a rifle and the 12 has the puck in there. What do y'all think?

+1 on what mancat said. Google around for pics of RPK and they don't have the carry handle.... I was reading somewhere a while back (can't remember where or I'd link it) about how the carry handle on the AES-10b was maybe a Century Int'l improvisation.... ...if you really want the handle maybe try contacting CIA; they might have a box of them lying around somewhere.

Wow! The Romy drum mag passes the Snap-Cap test with all my AK variants.....the ATI Korean failed w / every one of them......if you look at the two drums side-by-side, there is NO! Comparison,..... The Korean ATI drum has two flimsy, sheet-metal flaps for feed-lips whereas the Romy has the same system as any decent box magazine......... Got 2 Excellent ATI mags for my Saiga 12.....however, their 7.62x39 drum mag is a NO GO!

There you go! Please let us know when they are actually available and how it tests. I'll need one if I want to put a drum on the AMD-65 and be 922r good. Meanwhile I just ordered a Romy Drum from Apex to replace the "failure to launch" API Korean-POS.....if the Romy doesn't work, I'll give up and keep my few remaining C-Bills to myself.

Done and done. I Hogued-up on the AES-10b and the Polish AKMS. The Tapco AK-style 'toothpick' on the AES-10b had to go in any case; even if it was true to style, It felt like hell and I didn't like the looks of it anyway... The AKMS really doesn't look very different with the Hougue. That leaves only the Draco un-Hogued, but thats OK (for now). Its got the red, bakelite AK-style original grip which matches the finishi I put on the foregrips.

I was kind of getting the itch to modify mine a bit.....Could you possibly clue me in to which butt-stock and rail system you put on that fine looking specimen?

Whats up with the narrow profile, finger-grooved hand grips that come stock on the Polish AKMS and the Yugo M70's? Is that an American made 922r part or some evil, E-Block collaboration? I only ask because I'd like to replace them all with Hogue's. Is that getting way off base from the original?

Insanity in this discussion, but cool! Is it just me and my obsession (5AK vars vs 1 sweet AR)...or is there some kind of obsession built into AK's vs. ARs? 5 Dracos? Mad stacks of Dracos!!! I only got one...
