Picatinny rail covers, which would you prefer?

Recommended Posts

Pros and cons, these are two that I have found, what do you think? I'm looking for something to cover the rails on a UTG quad rail handguard.

The UTG would require 3 pieces per rail, and would be good to for covering up a rail that was partially used, ie with a laser or a flash light on the side of one rail.

The ProMags are cool because it would be one piece per rail, but I would have to cut one down if I wanted to partially cover one of the rails.

BTW, I have a green laser that I'm using on the right side of the handguard, so maybe the UTG covers would be the best.

Personally I prefer the low-profile ladder-style rail covers.

They are much more compact, and accomplish the same goal as the panel-type covers. Also, if your rails are the type that have the concave cutout you can route accessory wires through it. And yes, they are retardedly expensive for what they are. You can find three-or-four-packs for a bit cheaper but still ridiculous for a piece of rubber.

I saw some of those, I assume a chinese knock off, on gunbroker for $27 for 4. I didn't realize there was a "real thing" and it was that expensive. Why do you prefer these vs the other type?

I have a CHAOS quad rail andI use a variety of covers on mine, lo pro on top and bottom, with hand stops, and full covers on the sides. Might wanna check these guys out.

Oh, and their AK classic grip is very nice and comfortable.

Some of those look the same as the ones above, I'm kinda digging the the low profile grid style.

My S&W M&P 15X came with these.

I like'em enough for the range, but may get something more ergonomic, the covers sacsucks linked, http://www.combathunting.com/AR15_M16_M4_S...ail_Guards.html

look like what I'm thinking of.

If I was going into a real SHTF/combat scenario, I'd definitely want more protection for my rails.

More permanently attached and indestructible.

I second the Ladder Covers, Most rail systems already add quite a bit of thickness and bulk over the stock handguard, once you add rubber pads, it ends up alot like hanging on to a pineapple nearly twice as thick as your receiver. the ladder rail covers keep the bulk down, but keeps a nice grippy, non abrasive surface for your hand. The cheap ones tend to be more plastic-y, but work fine, and the more expensive ones tend to be a bit more rubberized. They are also very easy to trim to size. I think Area51tactical has some decent prices.

Also, the ladder rails, being one piece, and not overhanging on the edges, are alot harder to knock off the handguard, and nearly impossible to lose.

If you do decide to put on the thicker pads, i recommend the magpul covers, they have an excellent surface and are very comfortable, and the UTG pads are inexpensive, but have a nice comfortable grip as well.
