No doubt California is not gun friendly but thats not the end of the world. The drive on pacific coast highway is beautiful. You've given yourself lots of time to make that drive so if you want to start out your trip with a little jog to the east and see some real old west history there is a ghost town about five hours east of San Francisco called Bodie. Its a place where time has almost stood still. The remnants of an old gold mining town with buildings and furnishings just about as they were way back then. Yosemite National park is right next door and is another place worth going a little out of your way to see. I njust got back from there and I've never seen anything like it. As beautiful as the drive down the Pacific will be it will get a little repeticious. If you want to add something a little different, head east young man, head east.

Good and bad news;

BAD NEWS: California has some huge and awesome gun shows (crossroads of the west) with lots of great militaria, but the timing of your trip is bad and you will barely miss them on both ends of your trip. Also, you will only be able to buy 10 round 10/22 mags in California, as that is all that is legal for sale, but you can get them at any gun shop.

GOOD NEWS: You picked the perfect time of year to make this beautiful drive. The weather along the Cali coast in late August is perfect. Make sure you have your hotels and/or campgrounds booked NOW, as there is not much along the central coast of California, but what there is fills up fast.

*SUGGESTIONS = Chinese food in China Town (San Francisco), Monterey Bay Aquarium, Winchester Mystery House, Fish & Chips in Moro Bay, stay a night at the Madonna Inn, tour of Hearst Castle, Jocko's Steakhouse in Nipomo (best Santa Maria style steakhouse on the central coast and serves great local wines), shopping/dining on market street in Santa Barbara, Santa Monica Pier, Knott's Berry Farm, Disney (if you have kids), Sea World, one of the many 1-day surfing schools in San Diego, overnight tuna fishing trip out of one of the San Diego landings. STAY AWAY FROM TIJUANA!!!!

I also want to suggest this alternative for the first day of your trip; Drive from San Francisco to Reno Nevada (3.5 hour drive). You can by all the gun stuff at the Cabelas superstore. You can talk your wife into this side-trip with the promise of seeing the beautiful Sierra Nevada Mountains, scenic Lake Tahoe, and gambling all night in the Reno casinos. Then just drive back to Redwood City and get back on the wife's schedule the next day. Thats what I would do!

Have not heard any swine flu problems in Tijuana, I was refering to the political and civil unrest. Lots of tourist are ending up dead, missing, raped, robbed, and scammed - and this is happening daily to tourists. The drug cartels own Tijuana and the Mexican government has totally lost control. Imagine visiting a construction site toilet that has not been flushed in 6 months, that is what Tijuana looks and smells like. If you ABOSULUTELY MUST go to Tijuana, go during the day, never at night. Its three times more dangerous today than is was even 5 years ago.

Four people plus baggage from an overseas trip sounds like you'll be packed like sardines, and possibly underpowered, too. If you travel light and utilize a car top carrier it might work but I'd highly recommend trying to arrange something with a bit more room.

The only CA road trip advice I can offer, is that if you absolutely have to land there, rent a car as soon as you are forced to land. Then drive due East until you reach the border, once at the border keep driving, don't look back and never ever turn around. Seriously. I want to set up some sort of disaster relief fund for people who want to get out of Kommiefornia. Have rescue crews at rendevous all over the country who offer supplies and emotional support. You know Post Traumatic Stress and everything else you may need after even visiting that crazy ass state. If you live in CA, THIS MEANS YOU!!!!!!!!

California has restrictive gun laws, but as gunfighteruk no doubt knows, they are lax compared to those of his own nation. Good luck, hope you can find what you're looking for. The California residents can no doubt fill you in on more than I can, but you probably won't be able to find 10/22 magazines above 10 rounds capacity (unless they're pre-1994, and those will be very pricey if available). The rest of what you're looking for should be as available there as anywhere else in the states, hopefully a few Cali residents can direct you to the good shops.

10/22 mags are going to be 10 round limit for purchase unless you are LEO. Purchasing high-cap rebuild kits (just a high-cap mag after 5 seconds of disassembly, now called a rebuild kit) is legal although a felony to assemble but you will have difficulty finding them in stock at any stores - I order mine online to convert into 10 rounders that at least make the rifle look like it should. The law is ridiculous, I know, since a criminal can purchase a rebuild kit and assemble when he decides to massacre a local mall, but legal gun owners like me are too dangerous to be allowed to use anything more than a 10 rounder against those poor defenseless paper targets that just need a fighting chance.

The SFO airport is actually a few cities south of San Francisco, but I'd recommend making a detour north to hit up the city and maybe a little farther for some of the fun in the north bay.

There is a gun show at the Vallejo fairgrounds this weekend, July 11th & 12th. But I believe the 10 day waiting period still applies to firearm purchases at gun shows. Vallejo is north east of San Francisco. Even the radio ads for this event specifically state "lots of black rifles" so might be a good one.

Bullseye in San Rafael is my favorite gun store in the area, even though they are not inexpensive. But they are open 7 days a week with long hours and have an indoor pistol range where you can rent a variety of guns or bring your own. They keep offlist AR's and AK's in stock sold over the counter, including all sizes of Saiga rifles and last time I was there they had a converted Saiga-12. If you are in San Francisco just go north over the Golden Gate Bridge (you should do that anyway), take the 580 Richmond bridge exit and keep to the right, then a ways down take a left on Anderson (about the time you can see San Quentin state prison off to the right where all of California's executions are enforced). They mainly sell self defense & tactical firearms, nothing hunting related, but seeing all the Saiga's, AK's, AR's, super short shotguns, and huge assortment of handguns they sell makes you think this is actually a free state.

If you go north of San Francisco at all, there is always the Sonoma/Napa wine region that your wife would likely enjoy... you too of course. Most Napa wineries are tourist traps and charge for tasting, but the Sonoma county ones sell based on their quality and a tasting trip from winery to winery will usually cost you $0 unless you make a purchase. There is even the Korbel Factory, but expect to pay a couple bucks for tastings, but still great fun. Send me a message if you want my recommendations on a few wineries to visit.

Here is probably the best Sonoma County wine related site: http://www.wineroad.com/

If you haven't noticed I'm from north of San Francisco, so I can't give too many recommendations heading south. I'd recommend asking your question over at the forums at calguns.net for recommendations on gun stores heading south in California.

Just responding to the mag cap issue, California's high-cap mag law went into effect Jan 1 2000, and makes it illegal to purchase, sell, give, lend, borrow, manufacture, assemble, cause to import, or export any magazine with more than 10 round capacity (except for tube fed rimfire). That includes magazines purchased before the ban, so you will not find any pre-ban mags for sale unless they are disassembled as a complete rebuild kit... but you generally have to order those.

However, it is completely legal to own or use high capacity magazines in general in the state, assuming your firearm's configuration doesn't restrict them. It is also legal to acquire a high capacity mag if the method you acquired it isn't one of the restricted ways, such as finding one or accidentally being shipped one. So if someone accidentally shipped me a drum mag I would greatly appreciate it :) I could use it all I want, and trying to fix your mistake by mailing it back to you would actually be a felony! Although if I ask first for you to send one, it becomes a felony :(

Usually how it happens here is a California gun owner orders a 10 round mag off of an out of state website, and accidentally receives a 20 rounder. 20 round gold! Now the California gun owner owns a legal high capacity magazine that can be legally converted into any size he wants. I've crossed my fingers with every order I have made, but so far I haven't been so lucky.
