AK74 24mm brake for a 7.62...where to get???

Recommended Posts

I've been looking around but I could only find 5.45 diameter AK74 24mm style brakes... where do you guys find these for the 7.62? i'm about to punch the gas block and FSB off... I hear it's a pretty painful process (but rewarding)

I just put the brake that you speak of on both of my 7.62s. It works fine. I've put 30+ rounds through it already. No problems. $40 from dinzagarms http://www.dinzagarm...kes_hiders.html

Ok so after shooting more rounds through my 7.62x39 and cleaning it yesterday, I found something I think would change my previous comment. Have a look.

Anyone notice anything wrong here. The chip kindof suprised me. I now have problems and have evidence of the round hitting.

Well, from where I sit, that "Kool-Aid" has been pretty tasty and satisfying. I've yet to buy anything from Arsenal/K-Var that wasn't extremely high-quality. I've been very pleased with my purchase

Here is how you take pictures of this sort of thing.   This is an East German 5.45x39 zig-zag brake with a 7.62x39 cartridge stuck through from the business end.   As you can see the cartridge cas

agreed, but i just wanted to relate that if there is even slight contact with the smaller diameter exit, that will cause problems.

Cool vids. I would like to see a side by side comparison between a J-Tac and a real 74 brake. Maybe I'll drill one of my 74s out and make a vid sometime shooting next to a cam on tripod.

I forgot to come back and post the pics I took of the gouges left from using undrilled 5.45 brakes and thread adapters on my 14mm threads. I would not recommend this. Either get a 24mm threaded FSB or drill the mil spec brakes out first. As far as paying that much extra for an Arsenal brake with a bigger bore...no thanks.

First pics shows a 7.62x39, a .223, and a 5.45 round..all three in unmodded 5.45 brakes.

Now the 5.45....This how much clearance they designed the brake to have, for the particular round it was meant to be used with...or can someone provide proof that it was also meant to be used with the 7.62 round...not just that you can get by with it on some rifles?

I feel much better about having equal clearance for a 7.62 round, if using the brake on that rifle. That's just me though...

Im gonna drill mine out tonight. not sure what what size bit I should use though. Wow, your brake has much more damage than mine does.

I used a .359 dia drill bit. I viced the FSB on before i installed it onto a barrel and just drilled through with the FSB holding it in place. Then I reamed it out a little more with a dremel.... just a tad bit to clean out the burrs, reblued (or cold blue if you like) and voila.

I actually also fitted my brake on pretty tight. I started sanding the back of the brake down so that it would index between 11 o'clock and 12o'clock, then stuck an aluminium cleaning rod through the front brake hole and snapped the punger in place. shot it and broke it in a little, now you can hand index it into place and still have it be tight.

I've been watching now for a while, and haven't found a moral to the story yet.

If I were to go buy now, who has the best deal. . .and what is the easiest purchase for a Saiga 7.62x39?

http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?showtopic=56800

I bought my stuff from him... pretty fast shipping.

I'm going to clarify myself again. I DON'T think the stock 5.45 should be put onto a 7.62. When I got mine it was evident that I didn't have enough inner diameter for the 7.62 to go through. However, between drilling the hole out and stabilizing my brake on, it is working for me and I'm getting 2MOA groupings very consistently. What works for me may not work for you, I think it would, but who knows.
