dolomite_supafly 56
I am not looking for any of the shark brakes but more of at theround type. I am wondering what the length is of a few brakes. I am thinking about shortening the barrel and permenently attach the brake. I will machine the inside of the brake and the outside of the barrel for a slip fit then spot weld it in place. I really like a few and would like to get lengths to see if it would work the way I intend it. With the brake attached the barrel is going to be 18 1/4" long. I currently have a Krebs sight and plan on keeping it. I am thinking about SAIGA 12 RUSSIAN BIRD CAGE FLASH HIDER, anyone have a length on it? http://store.carolinashooterssupply.com/servlet/-strse-182/SAIGA-12-DPH-FLASH/Detail Also looking at MD Arms Izmash style, anyone have the length on those? http://www.mississippiautoarms.com/izhmash-style-saiga12-flash-hider-md-arms-p-1757.html Also, if I do permenently attach the muzzle brake is there anything I can't replace other than the gas block? I plan on eventually replacing the handguards but am worried I won't be able to. I am either going to go with a traditional wood set or a Galil style setup. Thanks Dolomite

Odd Man Out 1,283
Probably the reason no one responded is there is no reason to -- get the brake you want and measure it yourself. Easy peasy.

Not entirely true. I liked the birdcage but when I saw how long it was I decided not to get it. I'm doing a Kush conversion and I don't want to chop the barrel down. Going with the MD short 10 slot more than likely. Also, that pic gives a great relationship to the different finishes as well.

Thanks Dolomite With the expection of the Monster brake I think most are 3 inches or 3.5 inches..... Perhaps he would like to know what he's getting before it arrives in the mail....
Warthog35F 11
I put the limited run claw flash hider wich only adds 1" to the muzzle but OAL IS 4" and it looks mean it is called the claw flash hider breached and is available at CSS I to didn't want to add a lot to the end of the muzzle this is why I chose the claw

Thanks Dolomite Shouldn't have any problem with replacing parts, pretty much all the handguards attach in a way that don't require them to slide down the barrel past the brake. Heck, you can even work on the gas system just slide the gas block out of the way down the barrel.
gunfun 3,931
I have the MD one, and I think it looks as good as such a thing can. Very good workmanship. It is not a brake though, merely a flash hider. IMO if you are going to permanently modify your barrel like that, have it internally threaded for chokes, and consider attaching a brake that will counter recoil with the heavy loads. I can't remember the added length, but I know I have posted it elsewhere if you care to use google to search. I would measure, but I am traveling at the moment and the gun is not with me. jpnrm96 70
I know you didn't ask about this one, I have the DINZAG AK74 look alike for the S12. It is 3 3/8 overall length and only adds 2 1/2 to the barrel length. I had a similiar question when I first started Saiga conversions. Personally speaking I would use a TAT and DIE to rethread the end of the barrel. Then weld or blind pin it in place. You won't have to worry about misalignment and the issues that come with that. Good luck with your build. RLTW.
