BUNNELL, Fla. -- Authorities say a woman has been hospitalized after her boyfriend accidentally shot her in the legs during a hog-hunting trip in north Florida.

The Flagler County Sheriff's office says Steven Egan was in a tent with Lisa Simmons when he saw a hog nearby and shot at it Saturday evening. Egan told authorities he thought he hit the hog and left the tent to search for it. The sheriff's statement said he heard a noise, thought it was the hog and fired in that direction.

Deputies say Simmons was hit in both legs by a bullet and was in serious condition after surgery. Egan told authorities he didn't know Simmons had left the tent and was in the woods.

Both are 52.

In case you have ANY doubt, shooting at something you can't clearly identify makes you a MORON!

Well.... it says they are both 52.... makes me wonder if maybe the boyfriend figured NOW was his chance to get out of the relationship? "Mildred, go run over there in that direction and scare out that hog...."

The true story is even stranger!

Apparently she was sunning naked in the woods and when he came up on her she said she was game so he shot her.

Couldn't trap any beaver so he went shot one out of season. Seriously, accidents happen, hence the word accident.

Wrong.

Negligence happens.

If you trip over your own shoelace, that's an accident. If you shoot somebody you are responsible. If you didn't intend to shoot them you're negligent and imo should be prosecuted just as if you had closed your eyes and floored the accelerator when coming to a stop sign.

Here's a brief reminder of the rules for firearms safety.

1. Always treat every gun as loaded.

2. Never point a gun at anything you are not willing to destroy. (1 and 2 are a bit redundant, but redundant is never bad when it comes to gun safety)

3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.

4. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.

Even the simple-minded can see that you will not "accidentally" shoot anybody or anything if you are behaving safely.

That's not to say tripping on one's shoelaces isn't negligent. After all, all it takes to be negligent is a gross deviation from a reasonable standard of care. Of course, that's not to say a negligent firearm discharge isn't accidental. In fact, a mens rea of negligence demands that the harm is not intentional.

In the interest of preventing any negligent shoelace entanglements, I'd like to remind everyone of the rules of shoelace safety.

1. All shoelaces are always tangled around something.

2. Be sure of where every inch of your shoelaces--aglet to aglet--are.

3. Keep your shoelaces tied while your shoes are on your feet.

4. Be sure that your knot will not come untied during normal use.

I will withhold judgement until I see a picture of the girlfriend.

Yep, there's always a chance she needed to be shot. For everyone's sake.haha.gif

Without pix we cannot make an informed opinion. Maybe it was an honest mistake!
