I own an old stainless Ruger in 270 and under 300 yards with Hornady 130 grains sst  its katy bar the door , but if I was going to buy a new one it would be a Savage . I have a friend that works at Buds gun shop and all he owns are Savages and he does a lot of predator hunting. I shot his in 243 and the groups touch at 200 yards . They shoot pretty nice. I Don't think I would but a Remington they are owned by Cerebus group . I would also say look at a Howa with a houge stock my son shoots one in 308 with hornady 150 grain sst bullets and it is a nail driver they make weatherby and you can get one for around 500 for a 300 win mag , but they are not stainless but they are nice bolt guns very accurate and the houge stock feels good.

Just drop a scope on a saiga and go shoot. Yesterday my brother and I mounted cheap dust cover scope mounts with equally cheap 3 x 9 scopes on our mak 90's and had a hell of a good time at the range. Both rifles grouped surprisingly well at about 120 yards. They are not tack drivers, but we did hit consistently on or right around the bullseye with cheap Ukrainian hot shot ammo.

The only drawback to using an s308 with a 21.5in barrel as a hunting rig is weight. Mine weighs every bit of 12lbs with the m.i. rail and vortex 2.5-10, using the factory 8rnd mag. I love the gun but don't really wanna tote that around up n down these mountains, and I bet chili shares that sentiment as well!

Bingo!

Yeah, but deer rifle she is not.

Oh she'll do in a shooting house, but too big, cumbersome & heavy for tree stands or stalking.

She isn't a target rifle either, just a range toy really.

I've contemplated selling her so many times & then thought better of it.

Chile,

I've been giving your post a great deal of thought...

I have a NIB Savage Axis 308,  4rd mag, cheap stock, lousy trigger,

Upgrades will be,

Boyd's Forest Camo stock,

Trigger Mod,

10 rd mag mod.

Scope, most likely Nikon, that's what I have on the mod 93 BTVSS.

Now I find out that Savage is making the Axis 308 with heavy barrel.

Now I might have to sell original axis, bcuz I believe that the new heavy barrel will be a real shooter..

Suggested retail on the Axis Heavy is $382

Thanks for giving me a headache too....eyes_droped.gif

I will have to find some old pics from before the tragic boating accident... tmrw

Same barrel lengths 22in on both Mod 16 WW and the Axis Heavy,

Mag porn...

Thread for axis 10rd mag from SavageShooters.com

Also dude in Ohio makes 308 mags, kinda pricey but nothing is cheap

Sorry about the avatar guys. The wife was standing over me the other day and had a major meltdown when she saw the babe I had in my avatar. Believe it or not, a few years ago she had a body that rivaled the avatar chick, but a year of prednisone totally messed her up. I tell her all the time she is still beautiful and the only woman I need and want in my life, but the avatar caused some issues so out of respect to her, I changed to the quickest thing in my pictures folder.

You're a good man. Sometimes it sucks dealing with the insecurity, but a real man will do whatever he has to to make the woman he loves feel like she is number 1. Good for you.

Chile,

I own a Savage 10 and a Remington SPS Tactical both in .308. Both are sub MOA out of the box with the right ammo. I'd give the Savage factory trigger the edge over the two, but not by much. I know it's not much help, but if hunting is the primary purpose, I think any of the choices in the poll will suit you well for dropping Bambi. If the rifle will have other purposes, (target shooting etc,) then there are some on the list that may perform better than others in certain areas.

For hunting purposes, I would look at weight and which one is offering the best deal at the moment, because everyone on the list is going to hit what you are aiming at if you do your part.

One response to the mag question from Savage Shooters, dude said the mags from both rifles interchange and added as long the mags are for same caliber.

Savage is closed until Jan 5th, that includes their website also, the store portion, wanted to cross reference the mags see if same part number came up..

Well, I've had the chance to fondle the following

Remington 700 BDL

Remington 700 SPS

Tikka T3 Lite

Savage 16/FCSS Weather Warrior

Ruger American All Weather

Weatherby Vanguard S2

Two favorites so far, the Remington 700 BDL & the Savage...  With the Tikka coming in close behind.

As much as I'm set on synthetic & stainless, the BDL is a class act.

I really liked the wood & finish and it's checkering was deep & crisp.

The metal was much the same fit & finish wise and the iron sights were very useable.

Also, it's bolt had the smoothest action.

  • 4 weeks later...

Model 16 is the short action.  116 is the long action.

Don't think you'll have any regrets.

But now you have to pick your glass.

Neither do I, I took the time to fondle quite a few rifles, the Savage kept right up there in the top three choices.

I was really torn on the Remington 700 BDL, it is really sexy & I love iron sights.

But the Savage will take a beating better than the 700's beautiful wood.

The Tikka T3 just somehow kept feeling like a toy gun.

My Savage 11 XP came with Nikon glass and I have no inclination to change it.

I've used the cheap $200. Nikon Prostaffs & they performed 100% satisfactorily.

Couldn't tell the difference between them & a $500 Monarch 7 or Viper Vortex.

When you're hunting at a max 200 yards, you just don't need $1K tacti'cool glass.
