DLT 1,646
My poor brother is laid up in the hospital with acute diverticulitis. I took him to the ER on Monday after he called me complaining of intense stomach pain. His wife was out of town, so little brother had to step in. Long story short, doc told him he would probably die if he didn't get immediate treatment. Looks like maybe some sesame seeds he ate nailed his large intestine. Kinda creepy to think that little pockets of matter in your gut can kill you.
SGL 530
Oh man. That is scary. I hope it turns out OK for him.
storm6490 2,768
I hope your brother feels better soon. When he does, keep on him about eating fiber! Best of luck to you and your family.
Spacehog 2,218
I will pray for him DLT. I suffer from the same issue. Diverticulosis which is the condition that makes one predisposed to diverticulitis which is the acute infection that forms. I am glad he caught it and got to the hospital. He will learn to manage it with diet and knowing what the early signs are before it becomes diverticulitis. If the docs haven't already told him, he needs to begin having a colonoscopy every five years as well, as the condition puts us at a higher risk for colon cancer. Hope he makes a full recovery and he can return to some normalcy.
CruisinTx2 49
been there. November 2010; I had an acute attack that landed me in the ER followed by five days on IV antibiotics to the tune of 9,000 miligrams/day. The endocrinologist who was treating me said he had a general surgeon on standby in the event my colon ruptured and contaminated my core. That's the part that kills; as quickly as 24 hours and even with immediate surgery you may not survive. I feel for your brother; when he said intense pain--believe it. I passed out three times in the ER from the intense pain. It was 10 times worse than the 20 years of back pain I endured before having a spinal fusion. hope he gets through it and can live without seeds & nuts in his diet. those are the primary culprits my docs have ordered me to avoid. Bigtwin 219
DLT I witnessed the same thing from a friend of mine several years ago. The docs could hardly believe he was walking around at the time(though he was a bit delirious from the toxins I guess). He got the needed treatment and is alive today because of that. And strangely enough it was from a sun flower seed too. He no longer eats nuts of any kind now. Best wishes for your brother and your family!
Sim_Player 1,939
Lower-left gut pain that makes ya turn pail, been there. I almost called an ambulance last time. When I mentioned it at a doctors visit he said, "Yes, call an ambulance next time." Edited April 16, 2015 by Sim_Player
Capt Nemo 882
My father had it between his colon and bladder. Left him with a new asshole.(colostomy) That's one shitty way to have to live!
kresk 10,063
Had it--stole some of the cat's Flagyl and dog's Cipro and fixed it right up.

h3ws12hi 15
Gentlemen; been there done that. My fix came in the form of a sigmoid colectomy or sigmoidectomy...removal of the sigmoid colon that had abscessed and ruptured causing peritonitis (toxins in the gut). I suffered for years back and forth to the ER; each time xrays were negative w/ elevated white cell count and antibiotics to clear up the infected pouches. I knew the pathology of the disease; my dad suffered for twenty years before having the surgery. When I told the ER docs they dismissed my understanding of the symptoms for years. When the abscess leaked a new Dr ordered a CT scan and confirmed my self diagnosis and ordered a week of iv antibiotics, liquid diet (broth and jello) to stabilize and cleanse the colon. Surgery followed with resection? of my large bowel. BTW, I was a diehard intense top level atv mx rider and thought most of the associated pain was from wear and tear even though I wore back braces and kidney belts. The pain felt like a red hot poker in the lower left quadrant of my abdomen. Bowel movements during attacks would yield pellet like stool that was painful to pass; urination often pained as well. The day I finally succumbed to the poisoning I was curled up in a fetal position in bed and could barely move; thank GOD for my attentive wife (breast cancer survivor). I was in my early to mid thirties when I began experiencing symptoms. Now I have no restriction on my diet and eat pretty much anything I like and my colon runs like clockwork after my morning coffee. Respectfully, Joseph M Gruzinsky Questions anyone? DLT 1,646
Hmmmm.......thanks for your post Blue Wolf. It got me thinking about something. My brother also rides a lot. I wonder if there is any correlation between this issue and atv/motorcycle/horse riding?
