  1. That is a interesting point atakacorp brought up. Has anyone ever chronied different 308 and 7.62x54r loads out of rifles with similar length barrels? I have heard it argued that the powders used for 308 loadings are optimized for shorter barrels and the 7.62x54r loadings are better suited for longer barrels....hence the huge fireballs when fired out of the M44/M38 barrels due to all the unburnt powder. Of course, I'm talking about commercial factory loads. Not sure if any of this is factual or not. Perhaps I'll grab my Saiga and M38 and chrony them when the weather warms up. I have read w
  2. I was standing in my local gun shop a couple of days ago and the gentleman who had purchased the recalled Century Arms Polish Tantal walked in. I asked him if he had ever received his firearm back. He replied "no" and added that after Century had received the firearm they also sent another request letter wanting the magazines shipped with the gun back as well. The gun shop owner then added he had received yet another letter from Century explaining the recall was due to a safety lever problem. He mentioned a flaw had been found with the safety levers. The Century Arms Tantals have two different
  3. I am interested in the AK54r. I have two 16' Saiga 308-1 rifles. I know the 7.62x54r and .308 cartridges are very similar. Still, I would love to own a AK54r. I haven't heard much reported about how these modified PSL rifles are holding up. Has any major design/modification flaws been reported? My converted Saiga rifles have proved to be very reliable firearms and if the AK54r has proved to be in the same ballpark I will probably purchase one of these as well....not because it would do anything that the Saiga .308-1 will not do...but because I just want one.
  4. I only opened up one of the new stamped mags I ordered. I inserted the older version magazine in my 308 and then the new stamped version. The new stamped version did have a bit more play than the older one but nothing to concern me. Then I grabbed my other 308-1 saiga out of the gun safe and tried both the new and old version magazines in that rifle. It displayed more play with both magazines. But heck....these are kalashnikovs....they are not made to exacting tolerances. I will testfire the rifles with the new mags and if they function I'll not worry about it. To be fair my 5.45x39 and 7.62x3
  5. That explains it. Regardless of the generation, your metal magazines are a big step up in quality from the plastic magazines I had in the past. I sold the three plastic 25 rounders I had. Having 20/25 rounds of 308 hanging out of my guns with nothing but a plastic tab securing them did not instill a lot of confidence in me. The only way I will try out a plastic magazine again is if someone manufactures a design which uses steel reinforcement around the locking tabs and feed lips....much in the same way as my 5.45x39 bulgarian circle 21 magazines. Here is a picture of my rather bland looking 30
  6. I saw King of the Hill's picture of his old version as compared to the new version of csspecs 308 20 round magazine so I compared mine. Clearly my old style mag is approximately the same height as my new style mags I received today. Not sure why.
  7. I've read several posts on this thread many times over the years and I apoligize in advance if this has already been discussed here, BUT.....I recently read a discussion on another forum about cutting down barrels with chrome lined bores. Some people complained about the chrome lining flaking after cutting down their barrels and re-crowning. Is this a legitimate concern or not?
  8. I just ordered a couple myself. Do you have any of the old style left? I didn't see any listed on your retail page.
  9. I searched Google and loked on a few other ak forums and found absolutely nothing about a recent Polish Tantal recall. I stopped in at Fort Sackville Guns tonight and mentioned the recall again. These were Century built firearms but the owner has not received any more information as to what is going on with them. It sure is strange nobody else has mentioned this. I'm going to send an email off to Century and see if they give me a reply.
  10. I'll see if I can get a copy of the notice. I love my Tantal....not trying to bash....just curious. Heck, I even listed some pretty good references to validate what I posted. Both Orville and Jerry are in the phone book in old Vincennes. Jerry Mooney is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy which is a liason between federal and local/state law enforcement. Orville is a retired Vincennes Fireman. I am not trying to play a game here. And I'm really not trying to say anything bad about the Polish Tantal or start unfounded rumors. We are just curious and asking you gentlemen for answers.
  11. I stopped at my local gunshop again this evening. The shop is located in Vincennes Indiana and is called Fort Sackville Guns. Orville Umfleet is the owner. The recall was sent to him by the distributor for the last two Polish Tantals he ordered. I'm not sure who the distributor is but to the best of my knowledge the only two he uses on a regular basis for AK style firearms is Zanders Sporting Goods and Ellett Brothers (spelling?). I'm pretty sure these were CAI guns but I forgot to confirm that with Orville tonight. The recall listed the Tantal's by their specific serial numbers. Nothing withi
  12. I visited my local gunshop today and the owner had (2) Polish Tantals boxed up and ready to ship back. I believe the letter he showed me was from Century Arms International but I could be mistaken about that point. The letter did mention the serial numbers of the firearms involved but I did not write them down. I own a Polish Tantal that I purchased it from him months ago and I'm going to go back in and check to see if my firearm falls withing the serial numbers listed. He also told me the reason for the recall was not made known to him within the letter. Has anyone else heard about this?
  13. In my experience, when a gun is being held by law enforcement it is for evidentiary reasons. The weapon should be secured by the investigating law enforcement agency. A strict record should be kept regarding dates and times evidence (In this case, your PF9) was secured, removed, returned, and by whom, along with the reason for such actions. Both prosecutors and defense attorneys will treat law enforcement officers rather harshly if evidentiary procedure is not followed accordingly. Chain of evidence is so very important to a successful prosecution. The case itself can depend on proper protocol
  14. I think its great if the Saiga line enlarges it's choice of calibers for the American consumer. The popularity of the AR line of rifles has expanded due to the numerous calibers to be had in that platform and I would think the same would happen with Saiga's popularity. While the 6.5 Grendal would probably not interest me in the Saiga platform (unless it proves to be accurate enough to make good use of the 6.5 Grendal's ballistic potential) I would never argue with anyone who chose to purchase one.....I'll leave that for the anti-gun crowd. Now, I waited a long time for one to be had in the 7.6
  15. +1 on the Tapco G2. My first experience with the Tapco trigger was on a Romanian WASR I bought as a knock around gun. It was the best trigger of any of my kalashnikovs at the time. My Arsenal SGL-31 is the last remaining AK that does not wear this popular trigger group. For the record I like the Tapco G2 better than the Arsenal trigger. And I installed a Dinzag BG on my converted Saiga 5.45x39 before I ever fired it. My Arsenal SGL-31 came with a BG and I believe the russian military installs them on their military issue weapons so there must be a reason for it. Still, many Saiga 5.45x39 owne
  16. I voted "NO". I left the BHO on my first conversion but wound up taking it back off due to the contact it made with my trigger finger...it simply annoyed me. I did like the feature however. I still have the BHO units for all (4) of my converted saigas and if the right modification comes along I can always reinstall them as long as my trigger finger is not interferred with.
  17. My next Saiga to be converted is a 5.45x39. I really like the green furniture. Did you get the forend from Carolina Shooting Supply? I notice you went with the Hogue grip. I used this grip on my last three conversions and they are my favorite. I'm tempted to place one on my Arsenal SGL-31.
  18. I purchased a couple of the twenty round 308 magazines from you several weeks ago. I like the magazines so much better than the 25 round Surefires I had I went ahead and sold the Surefires on Gunbroker.com. I had planned to buy some more magazines from you but I remember hearing mention that you are coming out with a stamped version for the Saiga 308. Could you advise of a time line when the stamped 308 magazines will be available for purchase?
  19. Thanks for the help guys. I went ahead and purchase (3) different conversion kits from CarolinaShooterSupply. I have (2) 308-1's and a 7.62 which I am going to convert. I decided to hold off on my Saiga-12 for the time being. It is NIB and stored in my safe. If the prices keep rising I'll probably just sell it off....not real big on shotguns. Thanks again for the link byron.
  20. I've been absent from the Saiga-12 forum for a while. Been concentrating on my airgun hobby for the last several months. I decided to start converting my Saiga firearms to a pistol grip configuration. First up will be my .308's. All I want to do is a simple pistol grip conversion for right now that conforms to a legal part count. Is there a kit sold that has everything I need without having to buy different parts from different manufacturers? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
  21. The bottom "third" locking lug on the bolt of my first Saiga 308-1 was too large. It was almost impossible to cycle a round into battery. The third locking lug even ripped open cartridges with powder spilling out inside the gun. I posted some pictures on this forum on another thread a year or two ago. I sent the Saiga 308-1 back to Scottsburg, Indiana and they ground the third lug down so it would function properly. Even though it's just a little nub of metal I think I'll leave it alone. Better safe than sorry....but it is kind of strange nobody has a valid answer as to just why it is there.
  22. A new Government contract. If you do not believe me then simply review history. Most men are lambs who dream of owning teeth and will follow blindly.
  23. Thanks Multislacking! I used to pour over this publication as a child. There are some interesting unbiased firearm reviews to be read here. It was quite the scandal when Popular Mechanics reported a Savage rifle displayed better accuracy than the Remington and Winchester rifle they compared it to many years ago. I'm showing my age now.
  24. Antiquated thinking. The world has changed much in the last 100+ years and a man with a shoulder fired weapon would fare little better than a caveman with a rock this day and age if a serious war was waged. Iraq may or may not of had weapons of mass destruction but I'll damn sure guarantee you the United States has them. And seeing as to how the left is in power I would not want to be in Texas if the Democrats decided to do a little ethnic cleansing in the good ol' USA. I'm sure they remember well a fellow named Bush! Still the same old shit...only the names change. History has a lethal way of
  25. A friend of mine on Facebook (yeah I'm one of those) sent me a message yesterday detailing a proposal by the Obama Administration to form a Board of Governors made up of selected elected Governors from different states to oversee a transition which would allow enhanced information sharing between the Armed Forces, National Guard units, and domestic Law Enforcement Agencies while bypassing current protocols. David is a bit of an anarchist and seems to think this is a move by the federal government to establish greater jurisdiction within the individual states by the Federal Government. I took i
