  1. My no-step sx39 is also a March 09, with dimples. I gotta look into this.
  2. Has anyone noticed a correlation between stepped or unstepped chambers and if the rifle has a threaded muzzle? My rifle does not have a stepped chamber.
  3. From what you describe as your intended application, I don't see how you could go wrong with a s7.62x39 w/16" bbl. I just finished restoring mine, and it makes for a compact, utterly reliable battle weapon. All I have left to do is notch my safety lever and install my bullet guide. As far as the .308 goes, I take advantage of the better ballistics, as compared to the x39, and keep it for use at longer ranges. I have a DPMS LR .308 that I shoot at ranges of 300-600 yards. I also have a Savage Model 10 FLP in a Choate Varmint stock that I shoot at 1000 yards, to train for FCSA matches.
  4. The only tip I can give you is to find a .458 SOCOM forum. That's what I did when I got my .50 BEOWULF, I located the forum for it. Believe me, the Beowulf can be a major PITA to handload for. Edited after giving your post a 2nd closer read. The following is general info, nothing .458 SOCOM specific. (1) Chuck the cup of BLC2 (2) Get at least 2 bullet seaters from Lee. Better yet, 3! (3) Why flare the mouths? Case neck bulge or other problems if you don't? If you must flare, start with the smallest possible flare to the mouth, increase slightly until correct. (4) To g
  5. That is not what I am reading on that doc. I'm reading that any manufacturer involved in the "evolution of a firearm frame or receiver into a complete firearm..." is to mark said receiver with their identifying mark. Exception being those manufacturers granted a variance from doing so, usually those who are not involved with distributing the firearm. I see no definition of a manufacturer in that doc.
  6. It has dimples. There is not a Y stamp above the mag release, but the is a Y stamp farther back, under/below the side mount. It's punched though and the fcg linkage pin is there. The rifle is new and not yet converted.
  7. The dimpled receiver x39 Saiga that I just bought is thankfully without this feature. Why?
  8. The Saiga receiver is not constructed properly to accept the double hook trigger...but, you can grind down on the bottom of the 2nd hook until the trigger will fit, and then a little more, for minimal overtravel. Makes for a better trigger. The receiver need not be modified.

  10. If your Saiga does not have an OEM BHO installed and no cutout for one in the bottom of the receiver, you would have to do a small cutout yourself to accommodate it, pistol grip or no pistol grip. My S-12 is an old Kalashnikov USA import and has no BHO. I'm holding out for the LRBHO. Until then, I notched the Safety Lever to hold the bolt open. Works for me.
  11. There is a headspace go and a no-go spec for the 7.62x39 Russian, but I would bet the com-bloc spec would not be as tight as the SAAMI spec is, just as NATO specs are somewhat different. Here is a 7.62x39 go/no-go gauge set, but with these AK type rifles you could be pissing in the wind using that set to make a determination on the headspace. Maybe we could get some input here from a 'smith who knows. In any case, these rifles are test fired and come with a test group size recorded when new. Any problems should have been evident, then.
  12. Another Holo site. I almost bought one, but noticed the reviews. The early reviews on the Bushnell were good, but the later reviews were not good, and consistently so. I figured that the quality of the Bushnell unit had slipped. Found a new Eotech on Ebay, the AA battery model, for $340 delivered and couldn't be happier, but that was for an AR, a .50 Beowulf. Too high of a profile on my S-12 for my liking, I'm ordering the Burris FFII w/ the picatinny protector. I'm not worried about co-witnessing my S-12. I won't be hunting or competing with it and in a self defense situation it would
  13. These days "if you find for a fair price, it scarf it up" is the rule. The CCIs are now out of stock. Wideners has Wolf Large Pistol Magnum Primers in stock, also Small Rifle and Small Rifle Magnum.
  14. Winchester Small Pistol Primers are now out of stock, but CCI Large Pistol Primers *In Stock* @ $26 a 1000. For now. Also CCI Small Pistol Mag *In Stock* @ $26.10 per 1000.
  15. Ouch, the Win Large Pistol Primers are now out of stock.
  16. No. But you might want to get them while the gettin's good. Winchester Large Pistol Primers *In Stock* Winchester Small Pistol Primers *In Stock*
  17. Those are 147 grain bullets. I'm almost certain that they will be too long. If you seat them normally your OAL will be way out of spec: won't fit in magazines and won't feed. If you try to seat them super deep there won't be any flat on the bullet left to crimp against. Plus, 147 is super heavy for 7.62x39. If they do happen to fit (though I doubt it), get a trusted reloading book and START LIGHT. Good luck! Edit: just wanted to add that they're probably fine bullets for .303 British or 7.62x54R. 147 grain is a very common weight for 7.62x54R light ball ammo. The Lee Di
  18. Well, I'll mic them when I get them and post back on it. I'm hoping for .310-.311, and there is a pic of one showing .3105, so hopefully you have another batch.
  19. With respect to pressure, the .223 is sensitive to brass weight variations because of the cartridge's relative small size vs. the possible size of the weight spread. Many years ago I had problems with Federal cases and blown primers. The rifle is a semi-auto and I had primers popping out, right onto the bench. I had been loading with Winchester brass, and had just started using some Federals that I had came across. I quit using the Federals, thinking they were defective. A few years after I bought my 1rst digital scale and was weighing the Winchester cases for accuracy. They a
  20. I picked up some of my ejected casings expecting to see that Dreaded 'Saiga' Doughnut at the neck/shoulder junction, but I couldn't see it. I wasn't intending to reload the x39 because of that fireformed ring. It's mentioned in the manual, but not evident on my casings. I went ahead and ordered a set of dies and if I like my results I'll set the caliber up on my Dillon 650.
  21. Th HP Wolf just went on sale too. Wolf 7.62x 39mm 122gr HP $119.99-$229.99
  22. This would imply that they were still outside. I would wait for them to come inside so that there was no doubt... I wouldn't. 23. Federal cycles just fine. I always keep at least 1000 rounds on hand. Also, it's been on sale around here lately.
