Yes, you can swap between AK74 and M16 in less than a minute. The adapter drops out just like a mag (with the mag latch). The adapter wasn't modified at all. I would rather mod the adapter than the gun but the way M16 mags are built there's no real way to get the clearance you need out of the adapter. M16 mags are full width at the front where as AK mags are narrow at the front. This is a lot easier on a milled receiver because of the amount of material and if you notice the Galil receiver narrows up at the trunion where as an AK receiver is flat all the way across the bottom. The notch faces the trigger so the mag is still resting on the stop metal on an OEM AKM. The rivets are easy so set by hand. You need some some of supporting metal/anvil under the head and the just use some bar stock on the inside of the receiver and hit with a hammer til flattened sufficiently. I have a jig similar to the one 6500 posted that works on the standard trigger guards but I reused the guards on both saigas and didn't use it.

Yeah use the hardware that comes with it. The length doesn't compromise strength and the diameter is the same as the stock one. If you look at some other grips like the AMD or FAL they are hollow as well. I would use a bit of medium non hardening locktite if you use this on a shotgun. The optic mount is the Belarus highmount. I have since gotten a low mount to use the with the red. The red dot was about $70 through Sportsmansguide. I'll start by saying I got ANOTHER caliber for SHTF. My Saiga 223 should be here Monday. The missing link _for me_ is a working removable AR15 mag adapter. For an American SHTF, I'm counting on field pick up of .223 and AR15/M16 mags. I love my 762's and 545's, but what do you plan on picking up while dodging zombies? There doesn't seem to be any yeah or nay on whether they work or not. I don't mind on modifying the rifle but I want it to still take 74 mags if need be.

Yeah I knew the Russian Swat came like this but it looks like they are selling conversion pieces over seas now. Are people not bothering with the conversion due to an already short supply of mags? I really don't enjoy the hold the bolt open while you reload move. The 8 round mags are even harder to load with the bolt closed than the 5's.
