  1. If one attempts to make up the difference in length with a permanently attached flash-hider, it won't count as barrel length & they will require an SBS stamp to be legal. Never heard of that. I thought as long as the barrel was not less than 18", and any devices were permanently attached, you were good to go. I didn't think it had a bearing on what was on the terminal end of the barrel
  2. Anyone buy one of these and have feedback for us?
  3. Mike- Thanks for the offer, but if you don't think the strength of the mag will be an issue, I'm happy. This mag fits perfectly, and runs flawlessly. Thanks again!
  4. Get a Chaos Quad rail with the Chaos HK Style sights installed. They're still on sale, I believe. yeah but thats big and bulky and more than i want on the build im thinking about.. oh well guess ill just have one the gunsmiths put the sights on when i do that build.... I agree with Vampire. I love the chaos rail + sights, but it's a bit more bulky than I'm looking for on this build. Trying to go simple. Thanks for the help. I'll post pix when it's done...
  5. Just got a set of HK sights from RTG. What's the best way to tack them onto my S-12? I have an uncle with a tig welder, but I'm afraid of burning through the rear cover. I'm planning on keeping the front sight away from the gas block threads (to prevent warping, etc). Any other tips? Will they line up ok, or will I need to reduce the height of the front sight??
  6. Mike- Thanks for the offer to review some pix (and sorry for the delay in replying). I just snapped these: (modified is on left, stock is on right) (Close up) The mag fits great! No wobble or play at all... What do you think? Did I reduce the strength or integrity by removing too much?
  7. Out of curiosity, what's the smallest a rear mag catch can go while still maintaining it's structural and strength integrity? One of my guns requires both "a" and "b" fitting done on all mags, and quite a bit of material generally has to be removed. The mags fit perfectly when I'm done...no slop or wiggle room, but it kills me to have to remove so much material. Is this area a high stress point on the mag (like the front lip)?
  8. I'm in. I have two, 19" 3 port guns. One runs very well, the other has occasional FTF and FTE's but I think that's because it hasn't fully broken in yet. I'd give it a run on both... ***edited for typos***
  9. 1) Pull the bolt, brush out the internals, barrel and gas block. Lube up any metal-to-metal contact parts. 2) Pull the adjustable gas plug (the screwed in part at the end of the gas block with a "1" and "2" on it. Shine a light in the barrel, and see how many little holes you see in base of the block (they'll be small holes drilled into the barrel that will appear through a larger single hole drilled into the block itself).. You may need to probe around with the wire from a small paper clip. The newer guns seem to be coming out with 3 ports, but ymmv. If you have less than 3 exposed o
  10. I think he meant to say that they have a factory Bolt Hold Open...not a Last Round Bolt Hold Open
  11. What he said. Can't go less than 18". There's a thread floating around here about cutting a barrel down and permanently attaching a muzzle break to bring the overall length up to 18" (i.e. a 15" barrel + a 3" muzzle break). General consensus is you'll have to open up the ports a bit to compensate for the reduced dwell time.
  12. The chrome on both my S-12's is slightly "imperfect" where the gas ports are drilled. Not sure if it's from the drilling action, or something else, but I wouldn't worry about it.
  13. Out of curiosity, what do you use to sight the gun? Stock sights are buried by the top rail...
  14. For just a little more $$$, consider doing the full conversion. The ergonomics of the gun improve immensely, along with a vastly improved trigger pull.
  15. I am anxious to learn, I am just unsure if I have the ability to make reliability improvements, etc. If you have basic skills, you can do a conversion. Ideally, you'll need a dremmel or grinder (to remove rivits), and some hand tools like plyers, screwdrivers, and allen keys. Beyond that, all you need to do is spread out in an undisturbed work area, and take your time. I'd recommend looking at some of the conversion videos on the CSS website before you tackle anything. Then, go shopping and buy all the parts to put your dream gun together. On the plus side, by the time you're
  16. The Saiga-12 is an awesome weapon! I've spent quite a bit of time and money getting mine right where I want them...both in terms of ergonomics and reliability. Just a word to the wise...before you jump in, spend a lot of time reading this forum on mods, reliability improvements, and all the types of available mags. All of these issues will factor into the gun's reliability and suitability for home defense, since very rarely are they perfect right out of the box. I'll tell you this...once you get it right, nothing will match the firepower or stopping ability the S-12 offers.
  17. Here's a question regarding the MD-20 that I've never seen addressed... Is the mag catch area supported by an internal steel tab? I've always been a bit bothered by the fact that saiga mags have such a small mag catch, and I had to do both the A and B fittings on my MD-20 to get it to fit (leaving me with a pretty small tab). Looking at the MD-20 x-ray, it looks like it's got a small metal tab inside. Any thoughts??? Edit - looking at that again, could that be the head of a screw holding the back cover on? It looks like it's right at the mag catch, but I think the image cou
  18. Another +1 for CSS. They are top notch, and Greg will personally answer any and all questions you have about conversions or any products that he carries.
  19. Can you give us a step-by-step? Tools used, problems encountered, etc? Also, did you have to open your ports?
  20. I have OEM 5-rounders, Surefire and AGP 10's, and a few MD-20 drums, so this is my $0.02. I want mags that are durable and will last. With that in mind, I would spend the extra $$$ on the OEM 5 or 8 rounders, and the MD-20's. The OEM mags have the steel reinforced internal parts, so the lips/catch aren't likely to break off (like we've seen in cold weather firing on the Surefire and AGP's). Likewise with the MD-20...totally reinforced, made out of military grade polymer, and very few moving parts. Actually, the MD-20 will probably outlast the OEM and aftermarket stick mags. Don
  21. I have two, but that could actually make me buy a 3rd (and 4th).
  22. Another +1 for doing it yourself. I did my first conversion in about 4 hours, and had no problems whatsoever. Just read all the threads thoroughly and check out the videos on the CSS sight. The beauty of doing your own conversion is absolute NO ONE will put the time and love into your gun that you will.
