  1. Yeah, that would be the cheapest solution, wouldn't it? I think a good 80% of it was her, but it was occasionally failing to eject on me. She hasn't shot it since the change of ammunition, so time will tell I suppose.. She kind of freaked when I told her the amount I'd be spending (found a pretty nice, easily serviceable can for under $300+tax stamp) but I told her not to worry. "You're not going to be allowed to look at it, let alone touch it, so it's no dig deal." I thought about a Ruger Single Six since she's pretty inept when it comes to proper procedure. Somehow, she is still under the
  2. Well, I finally tracked down a supply of CCI Blazer 40gr. Love that stuff both for consistency and cleanliness. But it looks like I'm about to get a suppressor anyhow. Popped one shot off in the backyard Sunday afternoon and immediately heard that delightful squeal in my eardrums that says, "Holy lack of hearing protection!" With any luck, my garden will be pest-free next year and I'll finally have a class II item.
  3. I'm not familiar with the pistol versions, but I just got their Tactical Operator2 and I love it! My only beef is that their free-float system is not easily removable. My concern was that I will be unable to clean the gas tube/block effectively, but from what I've seen and heard, this will not be an issue for a long time. I know a few people who own RRA AR's now, and everyone is very satisfied with them. The only complaint I can recall was that the receiver pins are very tight and typically require a punch or similar tool to drift them out. Not exactly a problem, IMO. I think it looks pretty c
  4. Pretty sure that's the SGM tri-rail, made for the S12. However, they do make a virtually identical one for the Saiga rifles. I know CSS has them in stock. ~$65

    Vplug

That's the same spot mine runs Federal and Remington bulk. The way I find my way back to that spot without counting is pretty simple, but I find it harder to screw up 'simple.' I figured it'd be nice to have a way to glance at the plug and know where I'm at without counting clicks, so I've begun to color-code the settings. Since the Federal hulls are a maroon, I snagged a drop of maroon nail polish from my girlfriend and just filled up the + sign. I intend to get all my "go-to" ammo marked on there so I'll never have to stop and fiddle or think about which setting for which load. Just an idea.
  6. Thank you for posting this! I recently purchased a TLR-1 and a Viridian C5 and have been looking into holsters for awhile. I will now avoid them and continue the search.
  7. Well, I'm afraid I have some unfortunate news on the plating. I told the guy to only plate up to the end of the bolt carrier and to stop at the threads of the operating rod, as this is where the major stress is at. The plated-on material is not going to flex or even withstand the brute force of the piston repeatedly slamming into it. He apparently forgot this and plated the whole thing.. I noticed it, but hoped it would not be an issue. I forgot, however, that the end of the operating rod was far from smooth (I never touched it) and was therefore not suitable for plating. Mag-dumped ~40 rounds
  8. $Free.Fifty-free. As I asked around for a good metal finishing company, I discovered that a really good friend's father was the manager at a local place. The whole, "I know a guy who knows a guy" thing had me kinda nervous, but it came out pretty well I think. Since he did me such a good favor, I found out that he fly-fishes and gave him an assortment of flies I've had piling up for years. Cleaned up part of a table and got my parts done in one shot. I'd call that a win!
  9. That's the idea, at least. Since the nickel would only properly 'stick' to perfectly smooth surfaces, everything had to be smooth to begin with. Here's a before picture: The left-over casting lines were a serious PITA to get out, but you can see my reflection clear as day in that trigger. Took more than I thought to get it that smooth. So the idea is that the nickel should be equally as smooth and adds wear resistance to contact surfaces. It also wont scratch like the OEM finish. Granted that stuff is tough as hell, but you can't noticably marr the nickel without seriously trying. In addi
  10. Why thank 'ya, sir! Hell... I live about 2 miles from the village of cayuga, and only a mile or so from the lake itself... That and the seneca river off the north end of Cayuga is my primary fishing locale!!! I have fished toughannock many times!!! Caught some real sweet browns and rainbow in the mouth of the Toughannock creek... Send me a PM when you are going to be in town... maybe we can get together for a few cold ones. Damn, it's a tiny little world! Normally I'd actually be there right now, but my folks went to the opposite coast to visit my sister
  11. Wow, I'm not the only gun enthusiast into fishing?! Damned impressed that you guys have the patience and finesse to fly fish, any yet work on the most kick-ass, destructive toys on the planet! I got into fly fishing at the age of thirteen, but didn't keep up with it. I know I still own a fly rod, but its location eludes me.. Got into fly tying about the third time I had to buy them. I still dabble, but have kind of switched gears. These little guys are like magic. Bass, crappie, bluegill, perch, sunfish, hell- one guy told me he caught a catfish on one! I sell them to a local ba
  12. To be honest, I'm not sure of the longevity of the nickel.. I was certainly surprised at how difficult it was to remove the excess build-up from the process though. On the rear of the bolt, I actually had to bust out the Dremel (120gr) abrasive pads. From what I was told, flaking occurs from imperfections in the base metal as well as the temperature it is run at (stainless needs plated at higher temps apparently?) I would imagine that the quality of the nickel itself would be crucial, but I am far from an expert on the subject.. As far as discoloration, I think it is the result of oxidation? I
  13. Actually, I had already put about 12 hours of reshaping/polishing time in before plating. Turns out nickel is the opposite of paint- only sticks to 'mirror shine' surfaces. I know it doesn't look like I did much at all, but I was worried about throwing the timing off by removing too much material, so I took it easy. Did run into an issue with the added material, though: All sharp corners build-up more quickly than the curved surfaces. I did not know this... So while I was reassembling the BCG last night, I damn near had a heart failure when the bolt would not go into the carrier. 20 minutes of
  14. I know others have hard-chromed their BCG's, but I went all-out. My converted Saiga-12 now has the Tromix modified Tapco G2 FCG, BHO lever, bolt, and bolt carrier all nickel plated. I've read requests from others wanting pictures of this, so here you go guys!
  15. Range report: Shot at 50 yards for initial sight-in. Running S&B .223 55gr FMJ, (3) three-round groups put a 2" group center-mass on a silhouette. Moved out to 100 yards and it was shooting high as hell. Third shot hit a groundhog-shaped steel target. Switched to mil-surp 5.56X45 62gr 'Match' ammo and it brought it down some, but after 100 rounds downrange I still couldn't get the sights where I wanted them. Must be user error. Loved the RRA two-stage trigger. Total travel couldn't be much over a 16th, and it was nice and crisp. Still peeved that their free-float tube requires gunsmith
  16. Haven't fired it yet, but I've heard good things about ^ this muzzle break. Looks like a PITA to clean, though... Trip to the range either the 1st or 4th and I can't wait! Loving the star safety and the 2-stage trigger. World of difference between this and most triggers I've used. Damn sure puts a Tapco G2 to shame.
  17. After about three months of waiting.. It's here!
  18. I did basically the same as Barely. Make sure you use a tapered punch to get the pins loose initially. I took some scrap wood and used one piece under the barrel while I had the gun vertical (I put the stock thread protector back on, just for good measure.) Then used a mallet (just in case I missed) and a 1X2 about 10" long to drive the whole thing forward. As for marking proper alignment- Yes!! I might have gotten carried away and forgotten... Bright side: My 1st-3rd removal/installations were back-to-back-to-back, so i got really good at it...
  19. 10/22 is always a safe bet. I know I'm outspoken, but I actually prefer my Remington 597 (I realize it wasn't one on your list, but they're around the same price range.) I'm assuming you want to stick with semi-auto? If you go bolt, try to track down a Savage 'Mako.' My personal all-time favorite .22lr...
  20. Thank you for the welcome! I have not seen anything to read on this yet, but just as long as I know that the information is out there I will keep looking, thanks. CSS has a gas tube you can throw AK HG's on for $30. I'm doing the same thing and this saves hours of labor and quite a bit of money. I'm all for DIY, but this is pretty sweet. CSS Gas Tube They also have a ventilated model, but I'm not sure what difference the ventilation makes.
  21. My only recommendation from experience would be: Don't cheap out. I ordered some "Colt" mags from CTD for ~$10 ea, only to find out that they're not true Colts. Even though their name is stamped in the floorplate, they're some cheap-o brand. They work ok at 7/8 round capacity with RN ammo, but that's about it. My local gun shop guy told me to, "Look for the ponies." As with everything else, spend too little now, spend too much later... Just my $0.02.
  22. Hemostats instead of pliers (to force the spring down while guiding the axis pin through) will also give you more control over the spring and prevent slipage. Plus, when the lil' bastard tries to make a break for it, you've got it clamped in the jaws so he's goin' nowhere...
  23. LMAO. Me too! Took a Norinco SKS to my 'smith to have the front sight post/bayo lug removed and he broke everything he tried to use to remove the damned thing. Needless to say, I'm still using iron sights... I guess they really make their stuff to last!
  24. I've got a stainless Springfield G.I. that I keep those in for HD, but at $1+ per round, I haven't actually fired them yet. Have you ever had any issues with them? Nope they feed flawlessy through the kimber. i get sub 2" groups at 25 yards and thats all i need to take someones heart out of their frikin chest. Strangely comforting...
