  1. Yes, you would be. I didn't know that about the flash hiders, and that a muzzle brake has to be permanently attached. Thanks for that info.
  2. You can get 5rd mags here: http://www.cdnninvestments.com/ak471.html There may or may not be an issue with getting the mag to fit. You may have to file down the mag catch to get replacement mags to fit properly. If your 30rd mag fits, your probably good to go. If that is not the case and you don't plan on converting it anytime soon, though we here a Saiga Forums hope you do, you can just file the rear tang down on the mag itself. Probably the easiest way to go. If you put a muzzle device on it in NYS, you are considered to have a WMD and your future is dismal at best if you are e
  3. How do ya get such crisp, bright and smooth lettering on the receiver? Really nice gun by the way.
  4. Congratulations on your new purchase. I think you'll find the Gen 3 Cobra a very rugged, practical sight for your Saiga. I can't say anything about Kalinka, other than I've read the same negative reports of them. With mine I've discovered that when you change the reticle, the POI changes dramatically on two of it's settings. The Chevron, and the German style. On the other hand, the dot, and the dot/chevron stay the same. Except that when you use the chevron reticle with the dot. I don't know why this is, however, I think it's because on the dot/chevron setting, the chevron is used fo
  5. Here's my two cents. If all you need is defense, and you are not a trained warrior an older Ithaca 37 pump will do just fine. The older Ithaca shotguns were considered the poor mans machine gun because all you have to do is pull the trigger once, and cycle the action for repeated shots. Your like a walking claymore mine with one of those. Sometime in the 80's Ithaca changed the hammer and sear configuration so it could no longer do that. They are a dime a dozen in the local swap sheet where I live in Occupied NYS. You can get extended mag tubes for these guns as well, and they are cheaper
  6. +1 with what WillieD said. Heres one way at 25 yards with scope or red dot. Go to china mart and get some of those Shoot-N-See targets for this. Use a good rest, good solid sand bags or equivalent. Shoot one or two rounds at 25 yards. While using the sand bags, steady the rifle and cross hairs at the point of aim. Without moving the rifle, adjust the cross hairs until they are inline and approximately 2" low below point of impact. You should be in the ball park. Fine tune at 100. As bullet travels to it's targeted destination the projectile arks while the line of sight does not.
  7. Get the bullet guide anyway. That way you can use other types of AK mags as well. Why limit yourself to just one brand of Mags? Mine works with both the factory mag, and the Hungarian 20 round Tanker mags. Get some of those 20 round Hungarian Tanker mags here: http://www.akparts.com/ Personally, I prefer the 20 round over the 30 because the 30 feels awkward and cumbersome to me, but they have both at reasonable prices. $14.95 or so. Get em now before a new ban goes into affect. Any high cap mag you buy today for a common rifle is a sure investment. These mags are excellent, and a
  8. Hello, Timm129 I've had my Saiga for a year now. I started out thinking the same thing you are. Just get the skeletonized version stock, and be done with it. At the time it was not yet available for another month or two. Anyway, I ended up having mine converted and I've never looked back. They are much more comfortable to shoot converted, and doing away with the transfer bar in the Fire Control Group makes the difference between bitter and sweet when shooting it. For $65 I'd look to BattleRifleG3 right here in the forums and have one custom made out of a wood of your choice that is cu
  9. Heres the link: http://mp3.wtprn.com/Koernke/0711/20071114_Wed_Koernke1.mp3 Very informative. I learned a lot. Enjoy.
  10. For a ghost ring type sight that can't be beat IMHO is the Mojo. http://www.mojosights.com/MicroClick.html For a more economical model: http://www.mojosights.com/ak47_sks.html I also ordered the optional smaller dia peep inserts. Tightened up my short range groups considerably. One thing about changing rear sights on an AK is the fact that it is a royal PITA to do. Order an extra rear sight spring in case you bend yours out of spec while trying to remove the sight like I did. The Mojo just flopped up and down my first time because I pressed down to hard on it and took it's tensio
  11. Excuse my ignorance, but what is "tetra" grease? I've got Molly CV joint grease.
  12. Umm, didn't ever notice that it evaporates, but you could be right. And yes, like any petroleum based lube it will eventually creep somewhere. The only thing I'm not sure of with Break Free is the fact that it is very thin so I'm of the train of thought that there needs to be a thicker lubricant on high friction areas like the rails and such. However, I don't know that much about it either, only that many gun guru's use it and love it. From what I've read it is also a superior protectant against moisture. I read some where on-line where some guy put some nails outside for severa
  13. Another type of gun lube that is outstanding is a home brew that I use. Take two parts auto transmission fluid— Dextron lll, one part STP oil treatment, and one part Mobil Synthetic motor oil 10-40. This will not creep or flow off the metal. I use the BF for final cleanup, and put this stuff on major moving parts like the rails and bolt body. One trick to get it into really tight areas is to heat the container you put the mix in in hot water. It is rather thick. Another type of home brew that I've heard of, but never used is a 50/50 mix of Marvels Mystery oil and Slick 50. I think thi
  14. This guy is not just playing into their hands, he's one of them. The Brady gun grabbers are smarter than people give them credit for. They've got their people in key positions within the NRA.
  15. That explains it then. I live in occupied NY State. Wasn't really looking to get another AK anyway. I love my Saiga to much. Besides, Diana ( that's my Saigas name) might get jealous. He's got a nice Hi-point Carbine in .40 SW for around $280 though. Might check that out.
  16. What about a Century Pre-Ban Ak? A local gun dealer has a couple. Says they got chrome barrels too. I think they're Romanian but not sure. Comes with two unfinished stocks. Dragunov style, and regular WARSAW length, and two 30 round mags. Has side mount installed. Could re-finish the stocks no problem. Price is $389 plus the 8% sales tax. Are they any good?
  17. Go to this mans web site: http://www.dinzagarms.com He makes a polished FCG for unconverted Saigas that fit right in. If you don't see it listed, contact him. He's on a hunting trip right now, but should be back soon.
  18. Yeah, it's treasure chest of knowledge. Heres the original link: http://home.midsouth.rr.com/ak47ak74/ak_rifle_ammo.htm This is also a good read from the same guy about reloading the Russian cartridges: http://home.midsouth.rr.com/ak47ak74/reloading.htm According to the author, the reason we get such mediocre accuracy from the Russian 7.62X39 is because the powder charges are not consistent. He's published the date he found in the article, so it's worth the read. What he recommends is that you take 10 random cartridges and weigh each one. Take the average of those numbers and relo
  19. Yeah, I had a similar problem with my G2, only it did work somewhat. With the safety on the trigger would travel 2/3 it's length and would stop. The hammer would not fall, however, I thought this was an anomaly so I swapped it out for the K-var trigger and all is fine. It's a better trigger anyway. Besides that I would get a lot of accidental two, three round bump fires with the G2. Here is what you need: http://www.k-var.com/shop/product.php?prod...at=0&page=1 I know, it's an added expense, but simply put, safety is priority.
  20. Gee, thanks guys and gals for the compliments. I'm an amature web site builder. This is only the second one I've done that's actually on line. And thanks to Dinzag for his excellent work in adding to the template. I'm happy he could modify it to his liking without a lot of fuss. And thanks again to Dinzag for sending me some real cool parts for the labor. I didn't ask him to do that, but he did it anyway. Business ethic like that is hard to find in todays world of corporate cheats, and traitors. My gun is now the way I want it, and most important; 922r compliant. I'm glad to hav
  21. Need custom parts? Check it out. http://www.dinzagarms.com Dinzag has finally got it up. I built it, but Dinzag made a few changes and added the pics, descriptions and wording. He even changed the color scheme from the original but I actually like it better. Wadda-ya think?
  22. Dr What, you are not alone in your assessment of reality. It may seem like it, but you are very wise to stock up on as much ammo as you can, and do it as quickly as you can. Ammo is not going down in price, and will only be more valuable in the future. Whatever your spending now, think of it as investment capital, because that is what it is. Don't tell your buddies, friends about your stash either. I know sheeple, and I know that when times get ruff, they will think its your civil duty to supply them whatever they need that you had the foresight to see that they did not if you have it. Wh
  23. If you look on page 19 of the owners manual, it explains this. At request of Russian law enforcement they designed the chamber in this way to distinguish fired casings from the sporter Saigas from the military ones. Ballistic signatures? In either case they claim that it will not affect the accuracy, performance or reload-ability of the spent cartridges.
  24. Mine is converted with a K-Var trigger. It has a Cobra Red Dot. Using Wolf Mil Spec FMJ I was able to shoot 8 out of 12 rounds in just under 2" at 65 yards. That's on a bench with a good set of bags taking my time with it. My eyes ain't what they used to be, either. So by scoping it you should do much better. Get a polished FCG for unconverted Saigas from Dinzag, or I think Cobra 762 has them too, and you'll see your groups tighten up a bit that way as well. One thing I discovered with the standard forearm is that the screw that secures it at the bottom of the receiver would loosen causin
