  1. Universal is a non-military brand. The early ones were made to GI specs and should be worth as much if they're in condition as a military one in beat up condition. Universal later made non-standard M1 carbines. Twin action rods and an aluminum trigger housing distinguish this one. The aluminum trigger housing is prone to breakage and the system overall is less than reliable. But there is hope. An M2 trigger housing will fit the Uni carbine should the aluminum one break. A friend and I redeemed a Uni in such a way. As far as price goes, I would never pay more than $350 for any
  2. The minimum overall length is 26", not 22". The minimum barrel length is indeed 18" for shotguns, 16" for rifles.
  3. If only I had a digital camera, I could post pics of my G3 magazine conversion. If only I had already finished school a year earlier, I could be making the adaptors for you all already. If only... Seriously, guys, I'm really trying to get these ready in the midst of my many obligations.
  4. I always use double hook FCG on my conversions, and carve an extra notch in the receiver to fit it.
  5. The Centurion 99 is a G3 variant designed to use G3 mags. I have developed a conversion to use modified G3 mags in a Saiga 308. It's still getting the bugs worked out though.
  6. I'd have to say the M14 myself. The Garand was designed by an immigrated Canadian, so while close, the M14 was designed all by Americans. The M1 Carbine and M16 were as well, but lack the power of a rifle that I'd want to define American. While less well known, the AR-10 would be a good match for that title as well. The 1903s are extremely derived from the Mausers, so I don't think they count, and the 1917 Enfield was essentially an English design. The upcoming G36 is German designed, so the M14 may well be the last real American rifle. That does not mean that it's the best and cer
  7. If it's stamped it'll look like this: Just thought I'd point that out since your pic is of a milled one. I'm sure you can tell the difference though, just posting for the public's sake. I might know someone who wants one, I'll fill them in and see if it's still here when they get back to me.
  8. Looks great, what program did you use? I have a design of my own that's designed for my manufacturing means. It's more crude but certainly feasible. I'd ask something like $35 or so for mine. That would of course be contingent on finding the time to make them. I have no S-12 of my own to model them, and no money to buy one. I'll see if I can cough up my design and if enough people commit to buy one that would end up funding an S-12, I may jump in and do it.
  9. I always use a G2 FCG, K-Var buttstock, and US made grip, either SAW, AR, or Ergo type. Tapco could easily package their folder, their G2 FCG, and their SAW grip. I think undiscounted it would be about $100 for that package. Shave it down to $80 and you got a compelling deal.
  10. Yes it would still need the US parts, and because you have a foreign mag you'd need to find replacements which generally don't exist. How to tell if parts are imported or not? 1. All original parts are foreign 2. All black plastic stocks and detachable mags are US made. 3. Most US made pistons and op rods are marked. I have a couple rare exceptions from Tapco's earlier runs. Chances are if it has long term storage marks it's foreign.
  11. If I had money to offer I'd so gladly take another Saiga 308. These are great rifles. Hope you know you can get a US made P-grip, FCG, and buttstock for under $100 and do the standard conversion. I recently sold my Saiga 308 FCG for a build... that would have been perfect for your use. Perhaps ask someone on the board who's done a 308 conversion to spare their FCG for a nice price? I only asked $13 for mine, maybe I was generous, but they shouldn't cost much. Course if you want the trade offered here then it sounds like the best for everyone.
  12. FAL mags will not work in a Saiga 308 at all because the feed lips go all the way forward. My G3 mags must be modified, but will still work in a G3 (this was legal before the ban died). A FAL mag would have to be drastically cut at the front end and would be useless in a FAL. G3 mags are much cheaper these days anyway. Was a good idea, but I thought about it and ruled it out long ago. Tilt-locking and many-lugged bolts like the FAL and AR are better for that feed lips design. The AK has a 2 or 3 lugged bolt and the mag is placed under the area where the lugs lock. Allows for simplici
  13. You must have a US made piston OR US made op rod in addition to US made magazine and US made stock and handguard. If you had left the launcher on, you would have to use both US piston and op rod since the launcher would count.
  14. Actually, it was not from Krebs, it was from my own Saiga 308 that I converted to P-grip and used a home made buttstock that resembles a Zastava M76. Very glad to hear how much you like it, Bvamp, and your details on how to convert it to fit a Saiga with trigger linkage will surely be very helpful to others.
  15. I'm basically trying to tweak the adaptor to use all G3 mags, and find a way to make the mags feed reliably. Thus far I chaven't found a way to make them work any better in this conversion that couldn't be done before the ban died. Plus I'm a full time senior engineering student, so time is scarce. Wish I had digital camera cabability, but I'll definitely post pics if I can bum a friend's like before. Basically I have to overcome G3 mag differences and magazine spring strength. Both could be really simple mods, but still will take some time to develop. I'll have a bit more time
  16. Well here's a question... I thought the USAS-12 was domestic. Couldn't it be made again domestically and registered as a DD?
  17. I have not used one myself since it obviously would be illegal. But everyoner else says so and since all my three Saiga rifles use the same FCG, and my former Saiga 20 appears to have all the same important specs.
  18. I'd have reservations about modifying a full auto FCG part for use in a semi. The risk of it failing to do something very important is too high. I'd rather just spend the measley $30 and get a G2 group, which I've had absolutely excellent experience with.
  19. I am really really sick of them pi$$ing around on this. They keep promising "Oh, next fall, oh next summer" There was an add saying fall of 2002. At this rate I'll be out of school and have enough money to convert a 308 to 30-06 like I've been thinking of doing for a while.
  20. For any such torture tests, make sure to clean the chamber and barrel. Any gun, no matter how ruggedly built, will blow up if there's an obstruction in the barrel.
  21. Everything but the Gat is a total farce. I've seen them, several friends have tried different ones. The issues related to the Gat are obvious. If I were to use one, I would mount the front end somehow, hold the grip with one hand, and crank with the other.
  22. Oh my freakin golly... $189 for a Saiga 308??? That's a freakin steal. You'd better get that now. $229 was freakin good, $350 believe it or not is normal, but I could certainly do better (and I did). I'm telling you, get the $189 one, of course inspect in to make sure there isn't something tragically wrong with it. Unless it looks like it could catastrophically fail, that's a good price. I'd almost pay that price for a parts set minus receiver. I eventually hope to make a bullpup out of one.
  23. Here is mine, with its special friend. Mine cost a total of about $300 for the rifle and all conversion parts.
  24. And executive agencies with unelected officials making laws at whim... Yeah. Congress needs to do something about them one of these days. Preferably today, tommorrow would be nice too. Day after I wouldn't complain. Next week I'd still be thanking them. A year, well, I guess the stuff takes time. Several terms... yeah, I didn't think they were gonna do it anyway.
  25. Full choke will probably be fine, I'd pay attention to the cycling though since they may be loaded differently than normal rounds.
