  1. This is my free 2 cents. I am just recently getting into AK rifles myself. The AR just was not a large and heavy enough bullet for my hunting needs. Anway, there are quite a few ways you can go about adding a red dot scope to your AK rifle. Some of the cheaper top cover mounts don't work well and shoot loose. Some of the receiver side mounts place the red dot too high and are not even centerd over the barrel. I think, if it doesn't work well, it is money wasted. But that is just my opinion and the logic I use to mount scopes to my guns. If you want fast target aquisition, try a forward
  2. (1) Do you guys install the BHO lever on your Saiga conversions? If so, does it ever get in the way when firing or cause a malfunction? (2) Anyone know if the professional builders like Tromix and Red Stick Firearms install or remove the BHO lever in their Saiga conversions?
  3. My 2 cents, I am not sure what kind of accuracy you are expecting from a AK rifle shooting Wolf ammo at 200 yards. The AK is defintely a reliable hard hitting SHTF gun, but you have to factor in your ammo, scope, barrel, etc when talking about distance shooting. Anyway, to get to the point, I think a Ulitmak forward mount with a Aimpoint or Aimpoint clone is the best setup for a AK rifle from 0-200 yards. IMO, The red dots scopes make for just about the fastest shooting and accurate guns.

The good thing about the Ulitmak is that it is mounted low enough to co-witness your red dot sight with your irons. You can verify if your red dot scope mounting is secure by attempt to move it by hand(light/mild whacks) or shooting the gun. If you see your red dot sight is no longer co-witnessed with the irons sight, then "your mounting is not secure". With the Ultimak you can verify/check to see if your red dot is still on target just by looking at the irons through your red dot scope anytime the gun is accidently or purposely dropped or before going to the range . This works for me.
  5. Wow, I am quite new to AK guns myself, what are the benefits of using AR magazines with a AK?

I don't think it is the gun. My guess is that the scope and/or ultimak is not mounted securely. I have the Ultimak mounted on my gun also. I removed enough material from the handguards to make sure it does not interfer with the mountng of the untimak and barrel. The ultimak is low enough that you can co-witness the scope/red dot with the iron sights, then shoot the gun. In short order you will see if the scope moves.
  7. ok, I read the discussions in the Tech section above. I went with the Red locktite and installed a lock washer and nut on the screw from the bottom. Man, It was a pain to intall the lock washer and nut! Anyway, the Red locktite plus the lock washer and nut should solve the problem. Please keep me posted. Really. louielouie (the other guy having trouble) (1)The red locktite was applied to the screw and the tapped hole in the trunion , then with the bullet guide in place,I tighten the screw down good and tight . (2)After removing the lower handguards and looking at t

  9. Hello, I have been shooting my converted Saiga 7.62x39 for a while now and the bullet guide works great with my gun. While cleaning the gun after a recent outing/shooting, I found that the screw that holds the bullet guide had worked itself loose. Should I have used locktite on that screw after the bullet guide was determined to be reliable? What fix do you guys recommend to keep this screw from coming loose again? Thanks
  10. BTW, nice looking AK. Where did you get the side folding stock? Kinda looks like a Tromix rear stock I think, dont quote me there though Yes, it is a Tromix stock using Ace mounting/folding hardware. This particular stock is very sturdy and lightweight, plus it fits the shoulder very well making the gun easy to shoot with comfort. Great stock as far a I am concerned.
  11. I like the 7.62 better for the following reasons: (1)Ammo (2)magazines availibilty (3)recoil and shootability If you want to use the rifle for hunting where you need a larger cardtidge such as bear/elk, then 308
  12. The handguards and retainer look great. Where did you get the handguards?
  13. I used that same bullet guide on my 7.62x39 conversion as I was already ordering parts from Kvar. Anyway it required filing/grinding of the flat part at the bottom and filing/grinding on the left side where the hump is located. Once done, filing/grinding, you need to drill and tap the hole for the screw to fit. At the end of the day, the bullet guide from Kvar worked perfectly. It is possible to file/grind too much metal off, especially if it is your first built and you can't put metal back. The bullet guide from Dinzag comes already engineered/shaped for your Saiga rifle's trunion, comes wi
  14. I believe the standard AK has a bullet guide. The Saiga was made without the bullet guide and a magazine change.
  15. I made a bullet fom a section of 3/4" pipe.( link ) The newer model saiga rifles need a thinner bullet guide, but even then, the bullet guide made from 3/4" pipe can be grined/filed/etc thinner. You probably even find a thinner pipe. I definitly would go with the bullet guide modification and not the magazine modification. The bullet guide modification is a 100% "positive", allowing the gun to run with standard unmodified AK magazines.
  16. hello, If your sights were canted to the left and you aimed at the bulleye, your shots would be hitting to the right!(maybe I read your post wrong) Are you jerking the trigger and pulling the rifle off target? I did not think canted front sights were a problem with Saiga rifles. I would let a competant gunsmith look at your sights and/or if you have a friend/shooting buddy that is a good shooter, let him shoot the rifle for accuracy.
  17. I finally got all the parts to add a Ultimak Scout mount to my Saiga Ak rifle. I considered the peep sights, the top cover sight mounts and the receiver side mounts, but I think the Ultimak scout mount and a red dot scope in the forward position make for a really good and fast shooting rifle. Red dot scopes are not that expensive and you cannot beat them for fast target shooting. I had to cut on the saiga handguard to get everything to fit, but at the end of the day, I was surprised how well everything worked out! IMO, the gun balances perfectly with the red dot scope on the Ultimak Scout
  18. I am about to purchase a Ultimak scout mount for my saika rifle. I don't plan to bump fire a couple hundred rounds, just casual aimed fire and maybe a rifle match with the gun.........Is there a problem with heat tranfer to the red dot scope using the ultimak scout mounts that I need to be aware of?
  19. Does anyone have any expierence with the red dot scopes and the Ultimak scope mount as far the heat tranfer? The red dot scope has to get hotter that close to the gas tube!
  20. I think the dings you are seeing are caused during the gun's ejection of the brass after firing. The brass is probably hitting on the top cover. This appears to be common with the Ak rifles. It does not appear to be a issue as the steel brass is not reloadable or salvaged anyway.
  21. That is also the way I understand the Ultimak sight mount, it replaces your original gas tube on the rifle. There is probably not much of a need to take the gas tube off to clean the rifle.
  22. How much will the heat of a hot barrel affect the Ultimak mount and then the scope? Anyone have any experience with this?
  23. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hobbist, Did you have to cut or remove anything on the orginal Saiga handguard to install the Ultimaks?
  24. Has anyone tried this AK dustcover ghost ring sight?( linky) The cost keep me away!
