I took a Marlin .17HMR into a shop today to trade. I have worked with this owner for several years and numerous deals we know each other by name. I was trying to trade a grey laminate stock Marlin .17HMR with Versa pod and a Tasco 6-24 x 42 scope and 15 boxes of asst brand .17 ammo. I was figuring $400 in trade for one of his guns. I was offered $150 for the whole deal and told the calibre was dead.

I attend most local gun shows and have not noticed this or have I missed something?

17 HMR is alive and well in Northern Nevada. It is selling equally with .22's as a starter rifle at Scheels (I work there part-time).

17 HMR has ammo manufactured by multiple companies where a dead cartridge will usually only keep the one that introduced it (Hornady, Remington, CCI, Winchester all make 17 HMR).

The 17 Mach 2 is dying and you see less and less of those and I think Hornady is the only one still making ammo for it.

Gun trade-ins are not getting as much these days because the rush for military style weapons is over and the price gouging left a lot of buyers poor.

Shit no! it better not be dead! .17HMR is my squirrel exploder. I think he probaly gave you low value for a few reasons, first he's gotta make his money back on it, second more people ask for the .22LR over a .17HMR (which means it's harder to get rid of), and last but not least the market is flooded with small caliber rifles at the moment (everyone is "trading in" there plinkers for other bigger calibers).

I shoot my CZ 17HMR bolt action all the time at crows and cats. This thing will drive tacks at 100 yards and well over. I have not seen any shortage of ammo or heard of anyone saying don't buy a 17HMR. I love mine and with the ballistic tip ammo, crows go POOF, and FERREL cats don't go more than 1 step before laying down to go night night.

I bought the Volquartsen Cheetah from Mr. V himself to help the custom gun market at the same time I got Tony's .50AE. For a 10" barrel, it drives dimes at 100 yds (on a calm day). I'm not that steady for tacks. Squirrels look kind of funny after you use them for a backstop.

The .17HMR is a kick-ass bottle-necked round.
